Positive Behavioral Supports

Postive Behavioral Supports can improve or increase appropriate behaviors that we want to see continue such as sitting at a table appropriately, listening and using appropriate social interactions, increasing the amount of time that a person works on a task or homework.

Things that can increase appropriate behaviors:

Social Stories are great sources to teach appropriate behavior and allow the person to understand what is expected of them.

Task Analysis provides a way to visually cue a person in the completion of a task so that they feel more successful and independent.

Behavior Cue card provides visual cues to tell the person what you want them to do, and in some cases, what you don't want them to do. Along with this Color cards can help the person understand how he feels and give him cues as to what he needs to do to calm down.

Communication Boards allow the person to express themselves more effectively by either helping to trigger the verbal word they want to use of pointing or retrieving the desired symbol.

Schedules are great for helping individuals who struggle with time and places. By providing a schedule, like many of us, it helps us know what we need to do and helps us transition more effectively throughout our day.

These are only a few items that are available to help reduce unwanted behaviors, stress and frustration that our special needs individual may feel. By looking at the exact reason for the behavior we can determine the appropriate strategy to use to help the person be more successful and independent in their lives.
