Texas Updates · The Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services (DARS) is continuing to study ways to address limited funding for Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) services as Texas faces tough economic times. · The Texas Education Agency commissioner has announced that the agency will do an informal review of education rules to determine which ones can be modified or eliminated. This will give disability advocates an opportunity to provide input and address issues that affect students with disabilities. · The Housing and Health Services Coordination Council is accepting input until Feb. 26th on service-enriched housing for seniors and persons with disabilities, which connects housing with services and supports, both on-site and off-site. · The Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) has created a new Web site to help Texans prepare for the transfer of case management services under the Home and Community-Based Services (HCS) Waiver from service providers to local Mental Retardation Authorities (MRAs) on June 1st. Federal Updates · The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has reported that charges of disability discrimination jumped 10 percent in fiscal year 2009. · Completing your census form will help increase state and community funds for 10 years. Council News · has been hired as a TCDD Grants Specialist, starting Feb.16th. · VSA arts of Texas prepares artists with disabilities for careers. Resources · SER has been awarded $3.1 million to prepare 300 disadvantaged individuals in Houston for energy-related jobs. · A variety of resources are available to help with filing taxes and obtaining tax credits for individuals with disabilities and their families. · Many communities have free income tax-preparation services for low- and moderate-income families, plus seniors over age 60. · TCDD has added more entries to its Internet Resources Web Page, including a section on online Discussion Groups & Social Media. · Information on conferences, training and other disability events is on TCDD " Training and Events " Web page.
