Expressed in money the 30 hours was £12,500 plus school action plus £1,500 (that's a few years ago). That was the max the lea gave. I think that modern best practice is not to express it in hours because that seems to tie up what the school does with it. Guest guest Posted June 12, 2008 Report Share Posted June 12, 2008 We started on 20 but that didn't work and it was easy to get it up to 30 (still cheaper than special ed) and never any question of putting it down. I would get the school to say that they can't manage with less -- and to start saying that maybe not coping in mainstream and needs special ed. Maybe you could talk about looking for a special unit.........again much more expensive than mainstream classroom. It means an alteration to the statement. Have his needs changed? Has this been recommended by an annual review? You can challenge statement changes at the Tribunal. Guest guest Posted June 12, 2008 Report Share Posted June 12, 2008 Hi My son is in Year 3 and since Reception has had 25 and half hours a week stated on his statement with the school making up some extra hours. This year after our statement review county tried to remove the hours but I got them reinstated on his statement by suggesting that as his needs were so complex that the alternative to stating hours would be to break down the curriculum including lunch and playtime and state what support he needs under each area. County were more than happy to put the hours back on rather than do a lot more work. I do know that it was a policy in Hertfordshire to remove the hours from statements, as the lady from County inadvertently mentioned it in the conversation "that her bosses first make one decision ie removal of hours and then make another". This has happened to 6 people's statement with exceptional hours that I know of. I dont know of anyone in our county having hours cut, unless their child makes significant progress and improvements.
