Guest guest
DH and I had a good conversation about Christmas gifts and working out tonight. I told him I really did want a barbell and told him about 's $25 Walmart set. I'm going there to grocery shop Friday and am going to check to see if they have it or something like it and he was okay with that. I joked that he could use it and the 20 lb. dumbbells I want too (not that he'd get me both but that he could get me either and I'd be happy) and the conversation turned to him wanting to get fit again (he turned it that way, not me). We can't afford a gym, his preferred workout method, and he's done some Sansone and Wii Fit and likes both. 's cheerful, encouraging style definitely clicked with him. We even looked at collage for men's workouts and he wasn't sure he liked 's Men's Workout (led by Jim Fazio) and didn't see any others that jumped out at him. They had a ton of Gilad in that section but I wasn't sure if he'd like Gilad because he's seems like such a macho man and DH doesn't click with the manly macho man thing. Our library does have quite a few of his videos so I'll borrow one for both of us to check just in case though (I've never done a Gilad workout either). DH also suggested I check with all of you to see if you have suggestions for videos or Wii workouts he might like (we have a Wii balance board and basic Wii Fit). He has no rhythm so no dancey workouts (he's worse than me!) and he doesn't like competitive, drill sergeant-type instructors (he hates watching Bob & Jillian on Biggest Loser). He is anemic (on iron supplements and doing well with that), experienced kidney failure from an allergic reaction to a medication 2 years ago and has reduced kidney function because of it and has lost way too much weight because of ulcerative colitis (which he's currently taking steroids to control). So, he asked if there were workouts for a sickly, skinny dude, which is, unfortunately, how he sees himself these days. He hasn't worked out regularly in a few years but wants to get started again. He's interested in cardio and weights. He wants to be challenged but needs to start off pretty low key, to regain his endurance and confidence. He is willing to workout alone and with me. Any suggestions??? Thanks!!!
Guest guest
Encourage him in any way you can! Get as many from the library as you can to see what he likes/dislikes, then go with that. I wish my DH would get going on getting fit. You're lucky on that account! Indyrose > > DH and I had a good conversation about Christmas gifts and working out tonight. Guest guest
He'd probably like Tony. I was thinking about P90 but even that might be a little much for him right now, the anemia really slows him down. He's hates Biggest Loser so I doubt he'd like Bob. He doesn't like how the trainers get in the participants' faces, espeically. Thanks for the ideas, Judy! Videos for men who don't exercise but want to? Guest guest
Men's Health has a few good DVDs without a drill sargent like instructor.  May favorite is is the Belly Off Bodyweight DVD, here's the link on Amazon.http://www.amazon.com/Mens-Health-Workout-Weight-Routine/dp/B002UJIY5W/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8 & qid=1291909387 & sr=8-2 I like this DVD because it's broken down into short (5-10min) sections that you can mix and match for that day's workout.  The instructor is nice and chill, and there is always someone showing a beginner option if you need it. They also have a DVD that uses equipment:http://www.amazon.com/Mens-Health-Workout-Strength-Training/dp/B002UJIY66/ref=pd_bxgy_d_text_c Hope that helps.Noah
Guest guest
Hi Noah, I went and looked at both of these on Amazon and clips at collage and they look great! I really like Jack's approach and style! I'm glad you told me about the chapters too because I was thinking the first workout would be great but the whole workout will be too much for him right now plus he's concerned about finding the time too so the smaller chunks are great. I think DH would like these a lot too, thanks for the ideas! Re: Videos for men who don't exercise but want to? Men's Health has a few good DVDs without a drill sargent like instructor. Guest guest
I haven't been working out regularly and I find them good in that I can make them more challenging (tighten bands) or not. I think someone on list is doing a rotation. I just throw one in at night if I can get the guys away from our TVjTo: exercisevideos Sent: Thu, December 9, 2010 2:16:36 PMSubject: Re: Videos for men who don't exercise but want to? Guest guest
Hi Donna, These are great ideas, thank you! No, he doesn't care if it is a male lead (for example, he really likes 's workouts) but he doesn't want a dancey workout, straight athletic is much better for him. I'm really glad he's come a little further in his thinking. He's been thinking about it for months, but this is the first time he's asked me to help him actually do something about it. I haven't bugged him at all in the meantime, I know it has to come from him. However, I am going to come up with a plan for him (time & workouts) and see what he thinks. I think he's overwhelmed at the thought of actually starting so I think it will at least give him a starting place if I say, "Here's an idea, on Monday at 7:00 AM, do this workout and on Wednesday at 7:00 AM, do this one, what do you think?" Then he can tweak it as he sees fit. At least he will be able to see it as doable, broken down like that. So, that's what I'm doing. I think I might get him that "Belly Off Bodyweight DVD" that Noah suggested too, it looks like it would be really good for him. If I do, I'll make it a Christmas present. I might wait to see if he actually does anything before that though. Re: Videos for men who don't exercise but want to? Men's Health has a few good DVDs without a drill sargent like instructor. Guest guest
Hi Noah & all, I decided to order the first one for DH. I hope he uses it. Of course, if he doesn't, I liked the looks of it too so I will! I think the instructor seems approachable and for the rest of the reasons you mention, it looks really good. I'll let you all know what happens! Re: Videos for men who don't exercise but want to? Men's Health has a few good DVDs without a drill sargent like instructor.
