Guest guest
Hi Vicky, Any chance you are confusing glutamine, a frequently beneficial amino acid and glutamate, a neurotransmitter which can be toxic in excess? Guest guest
No, ha, ha, only kidding Patience, no I do mean Glutamine, we had on it in the early days when he had the worst gut imaginable and as I said it did help his gut. L Glutamine helps repair the gut lining but converts to Glutamate which is an excitotoxin. Guest guest
Gonna contradict you Vicky........ by my reckoning it's glutamate (or glutamic acid) that's converted to glutamine http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glutamate http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glutamine Not quarelling with your experiences with and glutamine btw. Guest guest
It's not an OK supplement here is, great for the gut but my understanding is that it can convert to glutamate, it drives crazy with anxiety so unless I have dreamt all the previous info about L Glutamine and is having some kind of placebo affect in reverse then this kiddo will be staying clear. I am not mistaking L Glutamine for Glutamate or anything else, this was much discussed a few years back, I didn't make it up all by myself, at the time the buzz was Yasko and excitotoxins and the question of L Glutamine came up many times. For yourself though, it is rarely the case that an OK supplement actually exists for all, you may react to something quite differently to others, this happened many times with my boys, ie Milk Thistle is not OK here, Calcium is not OK here, in fact some things are worse than not OK. These things happen just to make sure it is never nice and easy, sigh. Guest guest
I agree, the ALA is just as much a likely culprit, huge amounts given once per day always likely to be a problem in a toxic person but Nevin knows all this now Mx Nevin, do you think the ALA could have contributed to the seizures? Was it given just once a day? What makes you think it was the glutamic acid rather than the ALA which was the trigger? Guest guest
We used L'glutamine with Tatijana for a number of years... we really did not notice any improvements.. and at that time she was already having seizures.. and many grandmal ones too.. It is supposed to assist with healing.. however I am always a little concerned about adding a single vit, min or amino... as these can create an imbalance. I think that using better foods for her and improving her breathing did more to help her gut. Guest guest
The problem with that though Tracey is many kids have major problems with their digestion, inflammation, absorbency etc. quite literally screamed in pain at meal times, he was starving but could not eat and anything that went in came straight out the other end! He may have been an extreme case in that he plummeted down the height and weight percentiles from 25th to 2nd but it was never a case of "better" foods alone, in his case he had such damage from overuse of antibiotics we had to start a road to gut healing that took 10yrs to get to him to the healthy 13yr old he now is. Glutamine was part of that road and it did help his gut, but we had to drop it just as soon as it was possible due to the effect it had on his brain, ultimately a decision had to be made based on the dreadful state of his health and needs must, bear in mind the doctors were totally unconcerned about a then 2yr old who was clearly malnourished, under weight, under height, no teeth, bald patches, bi-lateral black eyes, constant diahrea and 24/7 head banging and utter distress and misery because as they said "This is autism"!!! I'm on a rant now, just shows this stuff is never buried in the past when your a mum. Guest guest
Hi Joanne, ALA was given to support liver and Gilbert sdyndrome and pea protein powder was given to help my son to gain some weight. Here is the link for the product: http://www.revital.co.uk/Lamberts_Natural_Pea_Protein_Powder ALL amino acids there and glutamic acid daily 3100mg..If someone is not converting this perhaps gets more toxic, this is the case for my son. Recently Dr Kees gave an amino asit supplements, three times a day,no glusamine but on the second dose I gave him in 10 min.he had a seizure. It is a bit coincidence perhaps but i am very reluctant to use it now. The power of ALA, Mandi is right, I know it .Even the supplements may contribute lots of unwanted sideeffects for a very sensitive possibly toxic child, like mine. Guest guest
Hi Tahira, I agree with you.But I don't understand why make him my son worst? In the past I remember another amino acid supplements were given by DR from Breakspear. That time he wasn't doing good either and I had to stop it.Unfortunately I couldn't fully aware the second time and seizures started. The thir time different dr like Dr Kees is highly recommending three times a day but I am not giving it.I am trying to learn and increase his amino acids through foods now. nevin > > > > Hi all, > > My Ds Homeopath has recommended we use Glutamine powder(amino acid)by Higher > >Nature,to aid with gut healing. Guest guest
Typically, dietary AA supplementation is used to correct an imbalance that may be due to lack or deficiency of an enzyme that results in a metabolic imbalance or to lower than essential levels of free amino acids for the construction of key compounds by the body's own metabolism. This is the metabolic mirror of PKU, where lack of PAH results in the build-up of phenylalanine. It is is why free AA profiling, and, ideally genetic screening for IeMs should be used to guide the need for supplementation or reduced intake of AAs rather than going on a 'suck it and see' it works for a lot of kids with ASD strategy - one size does not fit all.Hope this helps.Ken Subject: Re: GlutamineTo: Autism-Biomedical-Europe Date: Saturday, 5 March, 2011, 15:14 Hi Tahira, I agree with you.But I don't understand why make him my son worst?
