Guest guest
Wow Sharon- That was a big leap... I was talking about feed quality not putting things in the milk - feed quality does make a difference in milk flavor - ask anyone that has had milk where the cow was grazing wild onions:o) I didnt mean to make anyone defensive....and I pride myself that my goats milk is better then cows milk - mild and sweet and creamy on the tongue.....I am glad that your saanans milk is excellent - It just isnt my experience that most sanaan milk is delicious...but lots of folks drink it and like it...Remember this started with someone who obviously is sensitive to the " goaty flavor " . I have two high end La Mancha goats from different good butterfat lines. I never put their milk in the people milk. I can taste the difference...and of course that difference can change daily with each animal. It isnt goaty but it isnt luscious either.... Sanitation is first - remember I was the one that posted that I double filter into sanitized containers and then ice water bath my milk....Keeping it really cold is second....and for some of us breed does matter.. Just for clarity - My girls have pasture, no spray alfalfa, sprouted organic barley with organic sunflower seeds/flaxseed on the stand(just a little), free choice organic kelp, redmonds salt, copper sulfate and aluminum free baking soda.... Please accept my appology for whatever I said that made you feel like your goats and methods were on trial... aliza www.somekindawonderfulfarm.com > And why would anyone purposely alter/gimick with the flavor of their milk ? If I knew my farmer was doing that I'd be out of there. Guest guest
Aliza Sorry for the misunderstanding. No offense taken. . .guess I didn't read your connection with feed quality correctly. I firmly agree with your perspective. . .FEED DOES MATTER. Field to field, feed can vary in nutritional content due to soil integrity. Think instead of trying to identify Breed vs. Breed with flavor (though I think there is 'some' truth to it - on and idividual level/and location it can be misleading) The distinction to milk flavor can be FEED associated, goat individuality (genetics) and region/ even barn to barn. Us as goatkeepers are individuals too and as you express - we have our individual source of referrence - in 'our' experiences. Soil differences across the country may contribute to ' flavor'. Similar to 'wine' - the 'same type' of grape from different vineyards in different soil locations will taste different on the palate - Flavor is. . . . ' As you Like IT ' thank goodness there is a broad spectrum . . . Guest guest
could not agree more. To put it all on breed is over simplifying things! There are too many other variables in the mix that make a big difference!
