Autism supplement question

Hi Everyone~

I have a question about the autism supplement. Is there a rule or guideline for

the

ratio of students to teachers in the regular-ed classroom? The ratio is listed

on our

IEP (it has since changed) and it's probably too many kids. TIA!

I was just fixing to ask that question myself we are having our ARD

tomorrow and the ratio in his class is 1 teacher to 18 students.

I thin this is too many with a child with PDD-NOS in there.

There nothing specific in either the current rule or the revision. It's an

ARD Committee decision on what is " suitable " . (See item 7, below).

(e) For students with autism/pervasive developmental disorders, information

about the

following shall be considered and, when needed, addressed in the IEP:

(1) extended educational programming;

(2) daily schedules reflecting minimal unstructured time;

(3) in-home training or viable alternatives;

(4) prioritized behavioral objectives;

(5) prevocational and vocational needs of students 12 years of age or older;

(6) parent training; and

(7) suitable staff- to-students ratio.

Hi Tonya~

So, if you believe that a) the ratio isn't appropriate or it was appropriate

when

you agreed to it but isn't any longer, then you call an ARD?

Hi Diane! IDEA 2004 allows for changes to the IEP without and ARD meeting

if both the school and parent agree to the change. Personally, I'd feel

more comfortable with a real ARD. But then I'm one of those folks that like

to see things in black and white.

The new Autism Supplement should be posted on TEA's website Friday or

Monday and hopefully will give some more specific guidelines...

Guess it will be Monday...or whenever they feel like it. Several

people I know have talked to " those in the know " and have told me the

exact same thing - which is the actual text HAS been changed. I'm like

a lot of you now, and SO sick of wasting so much damn time on " trying "

to get help where it's supposed to be available. (/vent) sort of ;o)
