Guest guest
I have not been to a dan doctor for this exact reason. My son is a VERY picky eater so he would never go for the gf/cf diet. It is pointless for us to even waste the doctors time. Blessings, hey everyoneok, this friday that passed i went to go see a dan doctor. the first thing she recommended was the gf/cf diet. which seems very hard because my son eats nothing but chips and stuff. How should i get started and does this diet really work? oh, any one with experience from dan doctors, please need advice.------------------------------------Texas Autism Advocacywww.TexasAutismAdvocacy.orgTexas Disability Network Calendar of Eventswww.TexasAutismAdvocacy.org

Guest guest
Hi Marlee-- Does this diet really work? >>for many children, this diet really DOES work. Something happens that convinces parent to keep doing it—and believe me it can be a lot of work—especially at first. A child stops having diarrhea or sleeps through the night for the first time or begins making eye contact, or in our case, calmed down so much that family members asked if we were using traquilizers. . . . . . .You should see some noticeable, real change in your child. For many children this diet doesn’t work enough to make it worthwhile, but another diet, like the Strict Carbohydrate or the Low Oxalate or the Body Ecology diet seems to work better. No research is currently being done to develop any kind of metabolic profile (even though I’ve asked researchers to please do this) to see what are the odds of this particular diet working for your particular kid. The tests that do exist (like the celiac screen and the peptide tests) are not completely accurate. . . .ly, I’m convinced that we still don’t have enough of a biological understanding of what exactly is going on to even have an accurate test yet. And then there are some kids who don’t benefit from any diet. So that means, if you want to find out if this is going to work for you, you need to realize it will be a trial process, and a pain in the neck that may turn out to be a wonderful thing for your child and your family. The first thing that you should do is take some data. The Autism Research Institute (www.autism.com) has a great tool called the Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist which gives you a way to have a before and after snaphot of your child on paper—this will help you decide if the diet is worth it or working for your child. The next thing you should do is make a list of everything that your child is eating and look for GFCF substitutes of those things. Sounds like you’ve got a really picky eater. . . . .and it can be done. You just replace the foods he’s currently eating with GFCF substitutes of the same thing (and there are good substitutes for pretty much everything these days, even cheese) that he already eats. It’s so much easier NOW than when I started 7 years ago. There are so many products available. Chances are if he is a picky eater, he will benefit from the diet. If you e-mail me privately, I can help you sort out some good gfcf substitutes. Once he is on the diet, then his food choices could start expanding—in our case it took a while, a couple of years, for that too happen. My son basically got to the point where all he ate was GFCF pancakes and fruit for a year and a half. That’s it—but he managed to maintain his growth curve (both height and weight) at the 95%! My mother in law, as well as many other people, constantly assured me that he was going to waste away to nothing by just eating that. . . .but he never did. He always seemed the picture of health (with the pancakes + his supplements) and rarely got sick. Then you need to find something GFCF that your child WILL eat before you get completely on the diet. Gluten free chips are very easy to find. This step is really important. Because as you transition your child to a gfcf diet, you are basically changing his body chemistry. . . .and that food that you find that he likes may be the only thing he will eat during the transition time of a couple of weeks. Then begin phasing out milk products while you research what gluten is and all the places and forms it lurks in the typical American diet www.autismndi.com or gfcfkids or the tacanow diet site. You may also want to purchase or borrow from a library the Special Diets for Special Kids book by , which is the bible for this diet. Another good book of info and recipes are the Carol Fenster books. .. . Then, once the milk is out, you can start phasing out gluten. Then after he’s been off the casein (milk + milk products) and the gluten for about a month, fill out your Treatment Evaluation checklist again and compare it to what it was like before doing the diet. Hope this helps, S. hey everyone Posted by: " Marlee " marleetor@... marlee_3 Sat Sep 27, 2008 7:08 pm (PDT) ok, this friday that passed i went to go see a dan doctor. the first thing she recommended was the gf/cf diet. which seems very hard because my son eats nothing but chips and stuff.
