Guest guest
First of all, this is NOT " partly your fault " . You could have told your child to meet you on the roof and it doesn't matter. Your child is their responsibility no matter what labels he does or doesn't have!!!! You need to notify the principal and superintendent that your child was unaccounted for for a certain period of time so that everyone in your school can beef-up security of the kids. A good friend of mine in Katy had the exact same thing happen to her " typical " first grader and she raised heck about it - as should you. Incident after school Something happened today, and I'm not sure how I should handle it. I should preface this with my son has a medical diagnosis of PDD-NOS that they do not accept. The school is having a " book fair " this week. My kids went yesterday during their library times and picked out books that they each wanted. So this morning, I told them that when I picked them up, we would go so that I could pay for the books they wanted. When I came to pick them up, I was the first car in line and waited a waited. Finally the Pre-K teacher popped her head out and said, " They said he got on the bus, but she went to try and get him before they leave. " So I moved out of the way and waited a few more minutes until the Pre-K teacher waved me over. I got out of the car and went to her, and she said that my son wasn't on the bus. Well, of course I told him we would be going to the book fair after school, so I told the Pre- K teacher that I would go to the library and see if that's where he was. Sure enough... Now, I feel like this is partly my fault, because I said we would go there after school, but it upsets me that no one knew where my son was. When he wasn't in line for pick-up, they automatically assumed he was on the bus. My son is the type of kid that trusts everybody, and the library is in a spot on campus that anyone could have picked him up and no one would have been the wiser. I'm not sure how I should handle this. Any ideas? Thanks, Anne
Guest guest
Hold on, hold on. Your child sometimes rides the bus and sometimes gets picked up??? Why would they assume he was on the bus if he wasn't on line for car pick up if he doesn't ride the bus? It should be either or. Not both. Your son should always be on the car line or be on the bus unless of course you send a written note or fax or personally call the school and tell them to hold your child in the office/nurse's office etc. and, if you intended to go into the school building to pay for books why were you on line to pick up your child? why were you not parking to go in? i think both sides bare some responsibility - not blame. and both sides should be very glad that he was in the library. i'm not sure how many children attend that school, but i do think that it's easy to lose a kid. i've been at school early to pick up mine and when that bell rings it can get a little crazy for a few minutes and this school is pretty organized. that's why there should be a clear routine and if you want to deviate from that routine, you - or your representative - should be on hand well before the deviation occurs - school's out at 3:15, you should be there at 3:05. and, i think this situation says a lot about what your child hears, comprehends, acts on. use this as a learning experience all around. apparently he understood to meet you at the library. Guest guest
He rides the bus home on Wednesdays because my daughter stays after school that day, and gas is too expensive for me to make the trip twice in one afternoon. We live way out in the country. The school has around 200 students from 3-year-old Pre-K up to 12th grade on the one campus. I wasn't parking to go in, because the library is at the back of the school and has a different entrance/exit & road/parking lot. Because the routine has always been that I pick him up(except on Wednesday) and since I didn't send a note saying to have him meet me at the library or ride the bus, I expected him to come out the pick-up door. Both the Pre-K teacher and I panicked when he wasn't where he should have been. Anne -- Re: Incident after school Hold on, hold on. Your child sometimes rides the bus and sometimes gets picked up??? Guest guest
I think this is clearly the schools fault. They should ALWAYS be able to account for every child in their care. They should KNOW whether a child was dismissed to the bus. At our school a child rides the bus unless they have a note saying that they are being picked up OR someone arrives before dismissal and SIGNS OUT the child. They call the names over the PA system of all children who have been signed out and are being picked up and then the children are dismissed to go meet their parents in an area assigned just for that. Even if a note is sent in, you must still sign out your child before they will be released to you. The child won't be dismissed from the class until you arrive to sign them out if you've sent in a note. Now mind you, it sounds like you have a small school but no matter how small the school is, there needs to be procedures that are followed so that the children are always accounted for. It sounds like you need to raise a fuss and get them to implement better procedures to make sure something like this doesn't happen again. Most of all, do not blame yourself! Guest guest
You don't need to explain the details to us - we aren't judging you. Like I said, someone in that school should have known where your child was at all times. Incident after school Something happened today, and I'm not sure how I should handle it. Guest guest
those details do put a little different spin on the situation. since the ride on the bus does occur i can see why someone would have thought he might have caught the bus... but knowing the rest, i do agree that he should have been at the pick up. i still remind though, he acted on some information that was very important to him... i'm curious to know how he managed to get to the library unnoticed. he was obviously determined to get those books you said you'd pay for.
