Guest guest
Our daughter also has self help issues (and she does also have hypotonia). The small amount of private OT we have previously been able to obtain (both school and insurance have managed previously to avoid paying for OT for her but now she has diagnoses that are making them pay attention, finally) did help some with the issues. One interesyting thing also has been that finally at age seven she is somewhat able to tell me *why* some things are difficult. She told me washing hair inside the bath is " scary " (showers are out) so now we do it over the bath with a cup with her standing up. that really helps. Is your daughter able to tell you anything about why some of these things are hard? Now on an all about us note: I have *finally* this week gotten assurance that she is getting services through the school and have been trying to figure out what I should ask for at the IEP. I know she needs a lot of OT, both for school and for home stuff. Is it appropriate to ask for self-help OT at school and if so how do I frame it, what goals, etc? Any advice appreciated. Guest guest
I would frame any self-help requests as to how it will impact school. Like if it's hand-washing, point out that she needs goals that will enable her to have hygiene at school to protect herself & others. If it's eating, she needs to have access to proper, age-appropriate feedings. Also for all of that are the social isolations of not being age-appropriate. Congrats on the good news. Guest guest
Thanks Debi! Yeah I think I can do that and I think the OT (who has always been an advocate for Rose)will help. She has already told me she has a plan to get her tying shoes... which I hadn't even considered daring to attempt. I'm more concered about like using her fork and wiping her rear > > I would frame any self-help requests as to how it will impact school. > Like if it's hand-washing, point out that she needs goals that will > enable her to have hygiene at school to protect herself & others. Guest guest
Amen! Allie is 9, I haven't even considered trying to get her to tie her shoes. She still wears a 12 size shoe, we just keep buying the velcro. I reckon when the velcro runs out I may start trying then. Debi
