Guest guest
To me, I think another opinion is in order. Did this doctor suggest a follow up w/in 3 months? At that time your son will be 1...and still in the window of opportunity for early treatment. However, saying that, if it were my son (you can read my son, Evan's story on www.infantilescoliosis.org), I would be getting another opinion. I'd want the measurements done, an RVAD, and an opinion if it is idiopathic or congenital. Depending on where you're located, there are many Mehta trained docs that are familiar w/treating many patients with infantile scoli. Good luck w/your decision. Feel free to email or call me anytime if you have any questions. You can also order a DVD on the ISOP website that helps explain early treatment. Evan was diagnosed at 4 months and in his first POP jacket a month later. HTH and Evan Krista wrote: My story starts off, like so many others that I have read, I thougth my son's muscles were developing more on one side. I was devastated at the Dx. of Idiopathic Infantile Scoliosis. The 1st Pedi Ortho informed me that the angle was a 19 or 20 and that it would probably resolve. He then told me that I should just come back in 3 months. I instantly knew that I had to get a second opinion. This is when the story gets even more frusterating. The 2nd Dr. looks at the x rays and Dx. my son with Congenital Scoliosis. I am more confused then ever! This was 2 months ago. During this time my husband and I have been trying to educate ourselves for our big appt today. We went back to the 2nd Doctor that gave the Dx. of Congenital, I felt that even though the Dx. was not as promising as IIS that would probably (according to the doctor) resolve itself; I thought the x ray equipment was state of the art and that maybe something would be more clear, and therefore paint a better picture. Today the curve was measured at 17 degrees. He did not give a RVDA. This doctor still feels that it COULD be Congenital, he's still not sure. I asked him why a male baby (now 9 months old) with a left thorasic curve, no heart or renal abormalities (my son had an Echo and a renal ultrasound), no " hairy patch " birthmarks, according to the 1st Dr. no verebral abnormalities, could be Dx. with Congenital Scoliosis and not Infantile Scoliosis and he said, " because it is so rare " . I just need some guidance. I am reaching out to all of you that have gone through this, for your help. Thank you all in advance, Krista Sloan --------------------------------- You rock. Guest guest
krista, welcome to the group. jenny already gave you excellent advice. 2 things that came to my mind are: is your 2nd opinion doctor using the term congenital to mean malformations of the vertebrae or fused ribs OR that your son has had the condition early in life? if he is unsure of the diagnosis and the x-ray is not clear, then your son should have an mri. that would definitively say whether or not it is iis or congenital. at least your son's curve is very low and you have some time to get the proper diagnosis and then go from there. would it be possible to e-mail or call one of the doctors and get the rvad as well? that also would be something you would need for iis. it may very well be the resolving type. my best, deshea _______________________________________________________________________________ mom to lucas (6 yrs old) and ruby (3 yrs old and a handful!) north of boston, ma lucas was diagnosed with infantile scoliosis at 18 mos 68o/45o spinal detethering due to a tight/fatty filum at 22 mos tlso and charleston brace from 18 mos to 2 1/2 yrs old at children's boston, ma serial plaster casting from 2 1/2 until 4 1/2 yrs old at shriners in erie, pa now in a spinecor brace at 24o/18o from montreal. Guest guest
Welcome Krista, Sorry to hear of your up and downs in this journey thus far. Sounds like both docs you have been too are not that educated in infantile scoliosis. First off, an MRI will tell you if it is congenital or idiopathic. You ill know with a surity once that test is complete. Has that been done. X-rays, echos, and ultrasounds will not show the full picture. Second, all babies with scoliosis are considered infantile scoliosis. It is just a matter as to if it is idiopathic or congenital. Idiopathic just means no known cause (organs, bone structures, etc. are not contributing to the scoli.) Congenital usually means there is a cause (bones deformity and may be related something causing the curve.) To ease your mind, 17 degrees is not that bad, and most likely no doctor would cast him even if he had idiopathic. But that doesn't mean you don't want to find out whether it is idiopathic or congenital. As a matter of fact, I would be on the phone today demanding an mri. Once this info. is known, you can start to make a treatment plan. If it is idiopathic, I would demand to know the RVAD. IF it is under 20, you are still in the safe zone and he could have spontaneous recovery. Where do you live? Who are your current ortho. ped docs? Hang in there Krista. My son Cole had idiopathic scoli. He was casted at 8 months with a 48 degree curve and 52 degree RVAD. Casted for 14 months and then in a brace for 8 months. He is currently and zero degrees. EDUCATE yourself. These docs do not know everything. Guest guest
Krista, My daughter has congenital scoliosis and it was obvious on her x- rays. She has 2 hemi vertebrea in her cervial/thoracic area. If this doctor called it congenital, what are the abnormalities? If he didn't say I would call and speak with him or his nurse to explain exactly what his dx is and why. Guest guest
Krista, Welcome to the group, however, I'm sorry you need to be here. It sounds like you might want to consider getting a third opinion. Unless they are seeing some sort of anomaly on the x-rays, there is no valid reason for them to diagnose it as congenital. Typically, an ortho will do a MRI to determine if the scoliosis is congenital or idiopathic. A MRI gives them a clearer look at the spine than a x-ray can. My son was diagnosed when he was about 8 months old. The doctor did a MRI, a renal ultrasound, and a ECG. When all of those came back normal, he said that it was idiopathic....meaning there was no known cause. He also gave us the RVAD score. The RVAD score is critical for helping to determine whether the curve is progressive or not. Although my son was a bit of anomaly and had a low RVAD score, but a curve that rapidly progressed from 16 degrees to 31 degrees. Fortunately, I found this group early on in our journey and once we saw that his curve was progressing we got in to see a doctor who believed in early treatment of infantile scoliosis rather than the typical " wait and see " approach. It does sound very promising that your son's scoliosis has not progressed in the past couple of months and might have even decreased by a degree or two. The majority of infantile idiopathic scoliosis is resolving, but you might want to push your doctors to do a MRI and give you a RVAD score. Or maybe get a third opinion from another doctor. You might consider seeing one of the doctors who believe in Early Treatment. I believe there is a list in the files section of this group. Infantile scoliosis is rare and probably most orthopedics don't see very many cases of it. New Member My story starts off, like so many others that I have read, I thougth my son's muscles were developing more on one side. I was devastated at the Dx. of Idiopathic Infantile Scoliosis. Guest guest
Hi Krista, Congenital scoliosis is usually determined via an MRI. This is a very important first step in determining how your son will be treated. Has your doctor set up the MRI yet? Sometimes they can tell if it is congenital if there is an abnormality that shows up on the x-ray. Did they see anything on there that would indicate that it is congenital versus idiopathic. Just because scoliosis in infants is rare does not mean it is definitely congenital. If I was in your shoes (and I have been there!), I would get the MRI done and then make sure a doctor who specializes in INFANTILE scoliosis along with the neurologist looks at the MRI to determine what type your son has. If you would like recommendations of where to send the MRI results, let us know what part of the country you live and we can let you know which might be able to help you with another opinion. If it is idiopathic, I really hope you consider early treatment and casting as an option. Noelle (12-2-01) Ian (8-15-04) --------------------------------- You rock. Guest guest
Hi Sonja! Welcome! I'm Sara in WI, married with 2 dogs. Great job on your progress so far! This is a friendly and supportive group, so feel free to ask away anytime you have questions! The archives are also great to search if you are looking for info on a specific workout. Chances are, someone has written about it! I like strength training the best, but have been trying out lots of different cardio, too. I don't like dancey cardio, or complex routines, but also enjoy Tae Bo! Let us know what kind of workouts you are looking for, and I'm sure the group will have lots of suggestions! There's a big sale going on until Thursday on this site, with great prices: http://www.totalfitnessdvds.com/ Again welcome! My goal is to get in exercise every day and being able to do exercise at home makes that much more doable for me. I still go to the gym, but love my dvds! Most of the stuff I do at the gym is less cardio...pilates, yoga and muscle conditioning, but I also started doing zumba there and I love it! All of my dvds are cardio. My dog is an english bulldog, so is not much for exercising, but often times he'll come in the family room to lay near me while I am exercising. Or he'll push his tennis ball under the coffee table and then try to get it out which is one of his favorite "exercises." Thanks for the link, I am definitely going to check it out! Guest guest
Hi Kassia, Thanks for the welcome. How do you break up your gym/home workouts? I try to get in a workout every day. Some days if I take a less difficult class at the gym like yoga or pilates, I will also do a dvd at home. If I do total body conditioning or zumba at the gym then I don't do anything else that day because my legs get so tired. Other days I just do one workout at home if I don't go to the gym. I do find it easier to work a dvd at home into my schedule. Especially now that it's spring sports season for my two older kids, I am at some field almost every day of the week, LOL. Take care! Guest guest
Sara, Sharpeis are great too! My grandparents used to have one. Rudy is my first bulldog, I've always had boxers, who are much more active. He's a good dog, pretty mellow unless people come over. I volunteer with a boxer rescue! There are so many great dvds at that site. I already have an addiction to buying books (I love reading too) and I think that this group may cause me to want to get more and more exercise dvds too! uh-oh... Guest guest
Hi Sonja, Uh, oh is right! You sure will be in trouble with finding new stuff that you *must* have! We are great at knowing where to get the best deals, and enabling, too! Clear off some shelf space! Cool about the shar pei! Boxers are such nice dogs, too - wonderful temperament! Email me offlist anytime talk dog/rescue stuff! Did you work out today? I'm going to be doing hills on my treadmill shortly... Sara > > > Sara, Sharpeis are great too! My grandparents used to have one. Rudy is my first bulldog, I've always had boxers, who are much more active. He's a good dog, pretty mellow unless people come over. I volunteer with a boxer rescue! > > > > There are so many great dvds at that site. I already have an addiction to buying books (I love reading too) and I think that this group may cause me to want to get more and more exercise dvds too! uh-oh... > > > > Sonja > > > To: exercisevideos > > From: sjajsa@... > > Hi Sonja! > > > > Bullies are so neat! We have two shar pei mixes, and I volunteer for a shar pei rescue. One of our volunteers also has a bully. Shar Pei aren't known to be very active either, but my two mixes are. There are lots of animals lovers here, too - so you'll fit right in! > > > > I hope you find something good at the sale! They usually only have a sale like that about twice a year. Other good places to find deals are ebay (look there for Turbo jam!), amazon, and deepdiscount.com. > > > > Happy shopping! > > Sara > > > > _________________________________________________________________ > Rediscover Hotmail®: Get e-mail storage that grows with you. > http://windowslive.com/RediscoverHotmail?ocid=TXT_TAGLM_WL_HM_Rediscover_Storage\ 1_042009 >

Guest guest
i do something in the mornings usually cardio and core work sometimes pilates or yoga. occasionally strength but most of my strength workouts are at the gym lately. monday and fridays- i do upper body wednesday is heavy leg day and i try to get leg focused cardio on tue and thurs something like running on the treadmill or the elliptical. i have been trying to get stretch and yoga in the pm after swimming. i take my daughte to the pool most nights at the ymca. i do some leg lifts in the water it actually does work wonders. right now i am on spring break and the child is home so all my workouts are at home but next week i will resume gym workouts. i even have set all my exercises and going to do that mon/wed/fri bit with weights for at least one month then mix it up. either changing the split or doing different exercises but the same idea. i break it up b/c its hard to get a full hour in the morning b/c i am tired and its early and my body just isn't as strong but if something happens that i can't make it to the gym i love my dvds(and books and magazine clipped workouts LOL) as my back up. i am just loving the different equipment and the ability to go heavy safely at the gym. my lower body builds quite easily but my upper body stays kind of wimpy LOL. so my main focus it to at least to 3 heavy days at the gym and do the rest at home. kassia fitness blogmy domainSpecial Needs Scouting Too many people spend money they haven't earned to buy things they don’t want to impress people they don’t like.-Will Subject: RE: New MemberTo: exercisevideos Date: Wednesday, April 15, 2009, 11:10 AM Hi Kassia, Thanks for the welcome. Take care! Guest guest
Welcome Sonja, I know how you feel. I was in the same situation with the weight. I am a work at home mom of three. My kids are 9, 5, 2. I started Hip Hop Abs (lots of fun) lost about 10 -15 lbs and joined the Y. Lost more and have done ups and downs with weight but more down then up so I am now 50 - 55 lbs lighter!!! I have about 15-20 more to go. It's taken a while but it doesn't happen overnight so I am happy. I am now doing ChaLene Extreme at the Y and at home. I will probably do Great Abs G. also. ( I am lovin' them both!) Congrats on the weight loss! So how much more do you want to lose? > > > Hi Everybody, > > I recently joined and am very happy to be a member of this list! A little bit about me...I am a stay at home mom with three kids ages 12, 9 and 3. I have been a member at a health club for 8 years, but didn't start using exercise dvds at home until last summer. I discovered that I was at my non-pregnant highest weight ever at a dr's apointment and decided that I needed to add much more cardio to my exercise routine. I have a backround in dance so I do alot of dance type workouts but I also do some tae-bo, cardio kickboxing, bootcamp and biggest looser workouts. I have lost about 18 pounds since starting my new exercise regimen! I have been gradually building up my dvd collection and really look forward to getting recommendations from you guys. > > Take care! > > Sonja > > > > > > > _________________________________________________________________ > Quick access to your favorite MSN content and Windows Live with Internet Explorer 8. > http://ie8.msn.com/microsoft/internet-explorer-8/en-us/ie8.aspx?ocid=B037MSN55C0\ 701A >
