Guest guest
Section 504 doesn't have near the legal protections or parent involvement requirements that IDEA/IEPs have. Technically, a school can do almost anything under a 504 plan that they can under IDEA but that seldom happens. Guest guest
My child is in 504 and I am moving her to IDEA. They do not have to provide things like ESY etc under 504. Guest guest
Thanks for the replies. It sounds like there are only disadvantages to the child to go under 504. So, why not just have them dismissed completely if they won't get services under the IDEA? Is there something in it for the schools to keep a child " labeled " under 504? > If a school proposes a Section 504 status for a child vs. an IEP under > the IDEA, what are the advantages/disadvantages to the child? > >

Guest guest
No, 504 is unfunded and costs the schools money. It can be a way to serve a child who won't qualify under sp ed. Guest guest
That's what I was thinking. Guest guest
No, schools do not get funding for 504. They do get extra funding if the child is served under special ed. Guest guest
Sometimes. A lot of children with ADD are carried under OHI (Other Health Impaired) because it affects their education enough to be served under IDEA. 504 could also be for a child that has a physical impairment, but no educational challenges. Guest guest
During the legal workshop last Thursday, one of the attorneys lecturing (if I remember correctly) said that schools don't get money for Section 504. I think it's just a way to make some accomodations for students who don't need a full IEP, yet they can use a little help with special accomodations. Guest guest
Then why would a school fight a parent to keep the kid in 504 and not want to mover her to special ed. What are the draw backs being in special ed VS 504??-\ -- In Texas-Autism-Advocacy , " Tonya Hettler UA " wrote: > > Sometimes. Guest guest
They may be above the state average for kids in sp ed. That would impact their rating. Lowered expectations is a common problem in sp ed.
