Guest guest
While Jefferson talked about liberty, he owned slaves. As did Madison and other of the founding fathers. But that is not what they were talking about. What they meant (I think) is the reasonable ability to be self determining, IE to choose what to do, where to live and what to eat, drink, educate one's children and what to think. To be free to cut passages in the scripture out, if one did not like them, (as Jefferson did), to take advantage of what ever opportunities came their way, (as lin did - 22 illegitimate children; Washington - when the sign says, "Washington slept here, be assured he did more than sleep) economic freedom, which meant limited taxation and a voice in how the taxes were spent. I do not believe everyone needs to have 100% liberty all the time, as the saying goes, your ability to swing your fist ends an inch from my nose. What I think we really want is informed consent. My parents gave me paregoric, a tincture of opium in alcohol. This was to quiet my cough or keep a teething baby from crying. While I would not recommend it, the product was probably as safe as children's cough syrup or Ora-gel. Many children have been harmed by unlimited vaccinations, yet countless millions have been saved by them. (I have been to Africa and seen children sick with things that could easily be prevented, so don't start there). Can raw dairy be dangerous? Sure, but so is sushi and countless other things we ingest on a daily basis. I see the basic problem as mission creep with the government. In order for the bureaucrats to justify their existence, they have to find problems and small manageable targets without political slush funds are easiest. Here is an example:All you Need to Know about Government Bureaucracy: ** Pythagorean theorem: .................................................. 24 words.** Lord's prayer:.................................................................. 66 words.** Archimedes' Principle: .................................................. 67 words.** 10 Commandments: .................................................... 179 words.** Gettysburg address: .................................................... 286 words.** Declaration of Independence : ....................................1,300 words.** US Constitution with all 27 Amendments : ..................... 7,818 words.** US Government regulations on the sale of cabbage ... 26,911 words. SORT OF PUTS THINGS INTO PROPER PERSPECTIVE, DOESN'T IT ?I have no desire to stop anyone from anything they want to do, even smoke pot, get drunk or whatever, until I have to start picking up the bill for their behavior. If smoking weed makes you lazy and I have to pay taxes to support you or your offspring, you should not be allowed. If your drunkenness extents to your drive time and you endanger my children, don't do it. In other words, if you are the only one you hurt, are employed and not a ward of the nanny state, go for it to the limit of your ability to support yourself, offspring and habit. But the moment the public picks up the tab, you must quit. I am in favor of making the welfare crowd do a weekly urine test. I have to pass one to work for the government, why shouldn't any one who gets a government check?Bill,Roseboro, NC
