low serotonin - 5HTP advice please

Hi

I would like feedback on pros and cons of 5HTP. I' considering trying my DS

aged 3.

We had long consultation with nutritionist who has reviewed everything so far

and she feels Charlie is low in serotonin especially as I reported so much

improvement with P5P.

When I've looked further into this I'm gobsmacked. Serotonin is responsible for

heart rate and breathing and low levels can cause sudden infant death!

Charlie's ist problems were at 11 week when he had episodes of not breathing -

this is what eventually lead us to TST.

Low serotonin would account for many of the symptons he has left (in fact

probably all of them). - sleeping, poor appetite, very anxious, low confidence,

ADHD type behaviour. When looking into yasko protocol further methylation

problems can be responsible for this but now I'm being impatient as the results

won't be back for a while.

I'm desperate for him to go to sleep easier and stay asleep so thinking of

trying a bit anyway.

Also has anyone any negative experiences of 5HTP or knowledge of any

circumstances where it can make things worse.

I love 5htp for myself and my son.

We give it in the morning, some give it in the evening to help aid sleep.

It is an anxiety reducer.

I use Metabolics 5htp as Metabolics is a very " clean " brand.

Hi Alison,

We use quite a bit of 5HTP and have for a long time. I would think a vast

majority of kids with ASD have low serotonin. Most likely any child with sleep

issues would, as serotonin is converted to melatonin. Also implicated in poor

gut motility.

I've not heard of anyone having a bad reaction to 5htp, at least not that I can

remember, and it is widely used.

We've used a few different brands and not noticed any difference among them. I

just try to use clean brands with no fillers if possible.

Dear AlisonLow serotonin is the symptom of other things. Poor sleep and also poor light exposure. When I did a course on energy healing, we used  coloured lights as this was found to improve serotonin levels. The TST will improve sleeping and in restful sleep serotonin levels are better.

Whilst supplementing to improve levels might help short term, longer term it is only as his body functions better that the problem is actually resolved.Tracey

Thank you for your replies.  I'm concerned that Charlie has a monoamine oxidase deficiency (MAOA). If this is the case am I correct in thinking that supplementing serotonin would make things worse.  I know this means he would be high in seratonin and not low but when I've looked further this causes similar effects on mood, sleep, and behaviour.

When he was tiny we did the failsafe diet for a while which meant cutting out all amines.  He was fab on this but it is far too restrictive to do long term - its just aimed at elimination to try and find causes.

How can I test for neurotransmitter  levels and balance.  Is this something that can be done at Breakspear. Thanks for any advice.  We feel desperate at the moment.  He has come so far, but when you don;t know whats causing the problem you don;t know which rules to follow.

Dear AlisonThe fine balances within the body are so complex and this is why it has been helpful to focus on developing effective breathing.. because breathing influences so much, sleep, assimilation of food, hormone levels, lymph levels, detoxification, immune system, behaviour, neural functioning etc... When the body has a good self sustaining oxygenation mechanism, then the body works to balance the finer details and do what it does best... be a self healing mechanism.

If you are able to up the TST, I think that you may see gains in sleep.. and this may then begin to self regulate many of the issues which are of concern to you at the moment.

Our babes tune in to our fears so it is really of benefit to seek out things which make you genuinely more hopeful and positive.. If you are still breastfeeding. I believe our emotional state is resonated in our breast milk too.

Best wishesTracey

Thanks again TraceyWe've not been able to do TST for almost a week.  Charlie has had a virus -not been too bad apart from ist day but viruses always leave him with really bad coughing episodes in night, presumably because he is layed down.  When he is like this we can't do the TST as it makes him cough.  Every night for last week he coughed until he is sick.  Typically this will go on for a few more weeks, we'll have a good few weeks and then he'll get another often trivial virus.  Roll on Summer!

I'm totally with you on the TST front but often feel I need to do other things along side. I think the most scary thing is that Charlie doesn't tolerate any medication.  Each time he is ill I get scared thinking 'what if he gets a serious infection or needs an anasthestic'. I do feel I want to persue investigations to actually find out what is wrong with him.  At he moment everytime we see a doctor and I explain he is on a limited diet and doesn't tolerate any medications they look at me gone out.  At some point he will need medication.

During this period -ist day he had sky high temp for over 12 hours . We just couldn't get it down.  We have previously used paracetamol suppositories but he now gets very upset at this and I don't want to physcologically scar him.  This time we crushed 1/2 paracetamol tablet in some pear puree.  He had it fine but within 20 minutes had rash on arms and legs and couldn't stop scratching..

I'm even very wary of homoeopathic remedies for him.  As a baby couldn't use any teething gels so eventually tied homoeopathic remedy which included mainly chamomile.  Within 10 mins urticaria was so bad we had to got o A & E.

Another reason we need answers is that Charlie is a bonemarrow match for his sister.  Because of 's condition she may at some point need a stem cell transplant.  If there is something genetic, we need to know.

Thanks again for all your support.  We have Janas viviting at end of mve - we are ready to move on to next set of excercises.Alison R

Dear AlisonThe homeopathics are often in lactose.. and this would create big issues for kids intolerant to lactose- Rory my youngest was very intolerant to lactose.. so we used Non lactose formulations. Our homeopath puts remedies onto rice paper! .. There are a number of other formulations.. we have used sucrose with Tash and have had it is a water solution and in alcohol too.  Poor little babe sounds like he has a very over reactive immune system..

Such a shame TST is not totally brilliant during colds etc.. because circulation is needed to help get as much oxygen to the body as possible to heal and fight off viruses. etc.. and I sometimes wonder... as I am hacking and coughing at the moment, whether part of the cure is to work through the symptoms.. I was really coughing badly when I started a brisk walk yesterday, however all the coughing seems to have moved a lot from my chest.. and I am much less chesty today.. The more I sit still or lie down, the more the gunk collects in my chest.

.. We were really lucky to work with arguably the best homeopath in the world.. who does a whole bunch of other stuff... and she really helped to identify allergies, emotional issues and other stuff which was impacting on Tatijana's ability to function healthily... She does most of her work through distance healing and radionic broadcast.. which worked well for us.

I am sure that you will find the perfect connection or contact which will help the children step up to an even more awesome state of health.. soon. or perhaps give Janos a call and ask about increased coughing with TST and his or Lili's views as they have a lot of patients with major respiratory issues.. so will know how good TST is with overcoming coughs

Best WishesTracey

Hi Alison,

We use quite a bit of 5HTP and have for a long time. I would think a vast majority of kids with ASD have low serotonin. Most likely any child with sleep issues would, as serotonin is converted to melatonin. Also implicated in poor gut motility.

I've not heard of anyone having a bad reaction to 5htp, at least not that I can remember, and it is widely used.

We've used a few different brands and not noticed any difference among them. I just try to use clean brands with no fillers if possible.
