Guest guest
I am looking at purchasing a new Yogurt/Kefir machine...I am seeing all sorts of different brands, models, and types so I'm confused! Should I get one that has the jars to make up to 7 different flavors or one that makes it all in one crock?? I'd love to hear what y'all like and don't like and why! I'm still a newbie to goats, with only a year and a half under my belt, lol--so all help/advice is greatly appreciated! Guest guest
you don't need any special equipment to make kefir. it is just made on your counter at room temperature. I don't have a yogurt maker and make my yogurt in my electric oven with just the light on for 12-24 hours. I use a glass pot or glass jars. I don't heat the milk at all. I add my yogurt starter to cold milk and incubate. > > I am looking at purchasing a new Yogurt/Kefir machine...I am seeing all > sorts of different brands, models, and types so I'm confused! Guest guest
Agreed. I learned to make yogurt from Indian neighbors. Bowl on counter wrapped in big towel in the summer. In the oven with the light in the winter. Naomi " Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Guest guest
I use canning jars and a picnic cooler to make yogurt, too cheap to spend money on a machine. Guest guest
Same here. I have different size coolers to accommodate different numbers of jars. I mostly make yogurt in quart size jars but sometimes opt for pints and half pints. The cooler method works well for any size jar. Guest guest
There is no need to buy a machine when a pot of adequate size for your batch is matched to a pan that can hold the pot with room for adequate water is chosen. In this way I have found that the milk can be heated without burning, or other problems, giving a smooth thick yogurt as a result. I then take smaller portions of my batch of plain yogurt and make various flavors, i.e. .... chocolate, banana, vanilla and many others. While now no longer needing to strain through cheese cloth, to obtain satisfactory results. Guest guest
I have made homemade yogurt on the stovetop, then incubated in an oven (turned on to lowest setting, then turned off and let sit 18-24 hours) for years, but had inconsistent results. My sister got me a yogourmet machine, that seemed kind of fussy, and made we wonder about incubating in a plastic container (phthalates and BPA leaking into the yogurt?), although the result was more consistently thick. In the end, the best yogurt I made was by " messing " up a batch: 1. The milk boiled over onto the stove by accident instead of heating to 180. 2. Forgot about it as it was cooling and let cool to room temp of 80 instead of 110. 3. Added 2/3 cup of yogurt instead of a few tablespoons. 4. Put it in the oven, on the rack right above the heating element instead of away from the direct heat. 5. Took it out at 16 hours instead of letting it incubate longer. This yogurt came out thick, creamy, and delicious. My sister-in-law from India said was delicious too. Go figure! I prefer to ditch the machine. It's a hassle, even if you don't bother with their commercial starter. Do I really need another electric gadget cluttering my countertop? > > I am looking at purchasing a new Yogurt/Kefir machine...I am seeing all > sorts of different brands, models, and types so I'm confused!
