Guest guest
I apologize if I got a little carried away with that, it just sometimes get me about celebrities doing so many things for autism that do not directly help us . But yes even so the word is out there, the millions and fnsraising only go to them even so they are already privilige. --- " A.V. Guest guest
I agree with 's post that I appreciate any celebrity being willing to talk openly about their child with autism. While I am disappointed by Travoltas if they know their child has autism and do not admit it, I know they also believe their son's condition is a result of exposure to household toxins (a specific incident with carpet cleaner) causing a disease called Kawasaki Syndrome which symptoms are similar to autism in many ways. I also know they are getting treatment from a renowned autism specialist in Florida for their son and he certainly does still " exist " to them. has been very active in seeking healthy alternatives to household cleaners and has not swept their experience or concerns under the rug: http://www.checnet.org/prodres_myroof.asp. I understand the stigma autism brings with it as we have experienced this in many ways. I can understand avoiding a label - especially if doctors have told the Travoltas his condition is something else. But I also recognize the importance of raising awareness to minimize the stigma. Sadly, with so many now affected, understanding and acceptance is growing naturally since so many know people directly who are on the spectrum. For me, it will always come down to what is in the best interest of my child. I can only hope that is the Travolta's priority as well. I can't imagine the frustration of having so much money, private jets, and endless resources yet you cannot help your son. It must torture them. Just proves that celebrity does not give complete advantages over the sheer will and determination of the regular guys like us. In fact, if I had to choose, I'd rather have the latter. The Travolta's story helps me realize this. > > > I am happy that Autism is staying in the media and > > that people are hearing about it. Guest guest
I agree 100% about Travolta. About a month ago he was featured on the Sunday Houston Chronicle Parade section, and the family photograph features only , his wife and daughter! It is such a tragedy that Travolta acts as his son doesn't exist. I have no respect for Travolta after seeing how they hide away Jet. I am ignorant about Sciencetology- why would that influence Travolta to pretend he does not have an autistic son? Thanks, aimee What angers me are millionaires like Travolta who keep their autistic children hidden. His teenage son Jet has autism, however in interviews he nor his wife never mention his son, ever. He dotes on his daughter Ella Blue - her birthdays, movie appearances, red carpet appearances, etc but I guess due to being Scientologists Jet is either in a boarding institution or simply no longer exists. If you want to be angry at a millionaire, pick Travolta - I have. --------------------------------- Fussy? Opinionated? Impossible to please? Perfect. Join Yahoo!'s user panel and lay it on us. Guest guest
Maybe they are trying to shield him from the media spotlight to spare him harsh criticism from those who would judge him without knowing or understanding anything about what he suffers from. Can't really say I blame him for that. That would be a tough decision for a parent - to either subject your child to public ridicule on a massive scale or to be accused of forgetting him altogether. They could probably do better at finding a balance, but who knows? The papparazzi and tabloids are relentless these days. Maybe scientology is playing a role - they don't really believe in illnesses like autism from what I understand - they think everything can be cured with vitamins and lifestyle choices. They definitely don't believe in chemical imbalances and mental illnesses, which may explain why they would avoid an autism dx and prefer to stick with the Kawasaki syndrome, since autism is still commonly mistaken as a mental illness. I'm just glad to know that regardless of their religious beliefs, they are seeking treatment for their son. I don't think making him a poster child for autism is a requirement for celebrity, but it's a great choice some other celebrities have made. > > I agree 100% about Travolta. Guest guest
In my experience, the media and famous people has ever done nothing but cause more questioning, about why did I kept having babies, also, sentenced to death by everyone to never have more children , because of the possibility, comments like " I watched the show the other night with children with autism ( you are crazy if you even think about more kids " , Friends and family telling me : The boy's remind me of little animals, or monkey's people starring in many places, having to explain the usual old lady " and teacher's they are not misbehaving they are autistic( cause in my case when one throws a tantrum, the other 2 also do, ) , having to tell the therapist , I dont want to give him aderall, having to explain he is not Adhd he is autistic, Teach your kids some manner's he eats like that cause he is autistic, having to explain everything every where I go. And this is the worse one , oh man I got so mad when they said this to me ... " you are carrying a very heavey cross for the rest of your life..... I cried when they told me that. having comments " like you must be miserable, I watch that show the other night, your life must be a nightmare. Oh I am so educated, because I watch that show, so freinds and family think they can cure them now, autism means having a spoiled child, another comment, having to hear many times, " you are not teaching them how to talk " And and unlimited long list, that noone but me. the kids and my husband had being aible to deal with. Not to include all the people opposing in to helping us, and important people to want us to donate money to their organizations. I also do not admire them, just like noone thinks I am mother teresa myself or perhaps me and my daughter. Why can celebrities go and adopt children in other countries, instead of helping our children here, so many little children are abused and left here , why not to help them? I can write many books, but I am little bit busy. I am not envious of rich or famous people, but i know for a fact that they are not helping my family with getting the word out, I onces cross the border and the officer ask the boy's their place of birth, they couldn't answer and he got mad " I said they are autistic and he said what do you mean? artistic, I said autistic and I ghad to explain him their condition, and he told me to carry a doctor note, explaining about their condition when I cross the border nex time so that I can educate the rest of the immigration department, by this time the boy's were already crying in the car. Our life is not miserable, I have found humor out of many things, we love our children and I will never dare to look at my children as a heavy cross but more as a challenge to their independence someday, and yes my boy's have the stomach issues , steem. temper tanrums and everything that come with the ilness, our kids are not a little less autistic than the rest of the parents in this forum. I always get heat from expressing myself, , but I think that is why this forums are positive. Just like many children suffer of many other fatal illness, and that goes to rich , famous, middle class or poor. Is call life, we all humans go trough many things. I will never use pitty to make money, base in my childrens disabilities And I think Travolta is trying to help his son, and also protecting him from the media. I think that has a lot more sincere wish than Autism speaks itself. --- jackie chalons wrote: > I apologize if I got a little carried away with > that, > it just sometimes get me about celebrities doing so > many things for autism that do not directly help us > . > But yes even so the word is out there, the millions > and fnsraising only go to them even so they are > already privilige. > > --- " A.V. Guest guest
Does the phrase, " don't judge a book by it's cover " ring a bell with any of you who are against Travolta? Why does anyone get to tell the Travoltas how, when or where to 'display' their son? They may simply want their privacy where their son is concerned. Perhaps he isn't capable of deciding whether or not he wants to be in the public eye so they have made the choice for him - better to err on the side of caution, don't you think? Or - what if their son is capable and has decided not to be mentioned? Just because their son isn't on the cover of a paper or magazine doesn't mean they think he doesn't exist. Just because they have money does not mean they have to live up to everyone else's expectations. They have to live with themselves and the decisions they make for their family, not for yours. ps - i'm not a travolta fan. also don't believe in scientology. but if i was rich and famous, i don't think my son would be accessible to the public. i wouldn't think twice about spending scads of money on him for therapy and wouldn't feel guilty about it either. Guest guest
It might also be for safety reasons. I'm sure as high profile as the Travolta family is there would be a big risk of kidnapping. Their son may be severe enough to easily go with a stranger. If there are no public pictures, etc. he would be less of a target.
