I had my own cow for about 5 years and sometimes it got to be a couple of weeks old and we never had any problems. We ended up with the same problem, because we were in between calves. I had fed to the cat, dogs and given milk to anyone who would take it. I had 4 gallons that were about the same age. We were storing in washed cranberry juice jugs. I opened it up and it only smelled slightly sour, so we warmed it to 115 degrees and added yogurt culture from Stoneyfield store bought, poured it back into glass quart jars and let it sit in a cooler in warm water over night. it was fine. I cultured two of the jugs with store buttermilk and left in in the fridge. It made wonderful buttermilk. I took a half gallon to my parents for my mom to use making biscuits, but my dad drank it swearing that it was the best he had drunk in over 20 years when they quit

keeping a cow. We did have an extra refrigerator that was used for milk only, opened once a day and set on 34 degrees. Bill DunlapRoseboro, NCSubject: Milk questionTo: RawDairy Date: Monday, August 8, 2011, 10:33 PM

Hi All i run a raw milk group and one of the people in the group left me a gallon of milk they got about a month ago that has been in their fridge the whole time, unopnened, etc.

They said it got pushed to the back of the fridge and forgotten about and they brought it to me thinking i could make cheese or something with it so it does not go to total waste.

Where we get our milk is known for lasting in the fridge about a couple of weeks before turning sour. I have never had any left beyond the 2nd week so i am not sure, it could go longer.

What can i do with it now besides feed to my chickens?

By culturing to make raw buttermilk.. is that like making yogurt... just adding some of the previous batch (storebought? even) and then keeping it at that warm temp like yogurt, about bloodwarm and steady overnight???
