Guest guest
Hi Ronda, I'm not in CA, but just wondering if you checked with ARC about the funding for a 2 wk. behavior program again? Maybe they can offer some support. I'm dealing with that in NJ right now too. How old is your daughter? Karmen Summer Camp/aftercare For 3 yrs. now, there is nowhere in Palm Beach County for my daughter! Last summer the ARC was able to get funding for a 2wk behavior program, which was a great success! My daughter attended the program and it was wonderful... she was safe and lots of fun and experiences. ex: riding horse, swimming etc. I wish i could find aftercare and camps for my daughter so she can learn and grow and get over her fears and also so i can start working again. If anyone nows of anything in PBC please let me know. Thank you Ronda
Guest guest
Sorry I have no help/suggestions for you, but I'm having the same issues here. I started a new job about a month ago, thinking that it wouldn't be that hard to find decent care for my girls when school was out. My job is great about letting me work only the hours that the kids are in school so that I'm here when they leave in the morning and home before they get home in the afternoon. But I found out quickly that it IS very hard to find appropriate care for the summer etc. I found several private schools that specialize in children with disabilities like ADHD, Autism etc. and they have some summer camps/summer school, that my daughter could attend even though she is not potty trained again yet. However the cost of those programs are either very close to what I make or more! So it's not economically feasible for me to work just to take all or most of my money and pay to have someone else watch my daughter. And this of course leaves my older daughter home alone doing nothing all summer - which to me is not acceptable either and could lead to her getting bored and into trouble. And is just not fair to her. There are programs out there to help pay for child care, however we don't qualify because they are income based and my husband makes just over the cut off for any assistance we've ever looked into (including SSI etc) even private individuals want more than I can pay, and I'm not very comfortable with that situation anyway. Since doesnt have the ability to tell me if she's being mistreated etc. I am not comfortable with someone I don't know extremely well watching over her unless there are people they answer to... like at school there are always other adults around and the teachers and aides all have a boss they have to answer to, but a neighbor down the street doesn't have that, or the ability to take a break when they get too stressed. So our solution unfortunately has come to the point that I am going to work till school is out and then stay home with them again. I've already let my boss know. In fact I told her that I'd need to leave by spring break, but she asked if she could cover spring break for me, if I'd stay till school is out. I think they are hoping I will change my mind and they won't need to look to hire someone else... but I don't see it changing. Good luck to you in finding some type of after school and summer program for your daughter. I know it seems obvious, but maybe look in the phone book under schools and see if any of the specialized schools are going to have a summer program. When I was looking I asked all the people I figured would know about such a program, but none of them did. It was a suggestion from Easter Seals that I look into one school they thought had a summer camp, that opened the door to the other places and only because I had to look the school's phone number up, I found other similar type schools that had little ads in the yellow pages. Guest guest
Sorry- I lost the original message, but are there any summer camp/programs in your community where they have to have spaces for kids with special needs? A lot of our summer camps (Southern Ontario) that are run by the community have to have so many spaces put aside for special needs kids- some provide workers, some don't, but I know a lot of people who have been very happy with their child's placement in those camps. Theresa- I can understand your frustration about work. My kids are now 13, and I haven't been able to hold a full-time (or even regular part-time) job since they were born. I've gotten a few jobs over the last 5 or 6 years, but have always had to stop working because someone ended up in the hospital, had a crisis, or whatever. It's also pretty rare that a job that will cover the cost of daycare comes along. It's very, very frustrating, not only because a second income would be very welcome, but because I'm pretty tired of just being at home. I don't have any answers for you, but I share your frustration. By the time that (theoretically) all of my kids will be on their own in one way or another I will have been out of the official workforce for almost 20 years, and that's not very encouraging. Especially since my husband's American, and our 401/k has pretty much vanished in the wind thanks to the recession- I think that a lot of people undervalue the financial cost of having kids with special needs. I wouldn't trade my kids, but I don't mind saying that I'm not thrilled with only being able to work from home. Guest guest
Hi Karmen, We live in FL. not CA. My sister lives in NJ. she keeps telling me we need to move up there, that there's more help in NJ. My daughter just turned 10 last week. Yes the ARC is hoping to get funding again for this summer, but they dont know yet. We just have to wait and see. How old is your daugher? Guest guest
Hi Ronda, Sorry for the state mistake. Must have been looking at another post just before yours and got stuck on CA. My daughter will be 7 in May. We have applied for camp funding through DDD, a state organization in which you can register your special needs child with and they will help with respite and camp funding. I am hoping we get it this year. I'm nervous moreso because the economy is bad and state funding is coming to a halt in certain arenas. Let me know how things are going with you finding summer placement. Is your daughter high functioning? Would she require a shadow? I requested a shadow for my daughter for camp. I hope that comes through also. Karmen Summer Camp/aftercare > > > For 3 yrs. now, there is nowhere in Palm Beach County for my daughter! Guest guest
Hi Karmen, You dont have to apoligise... No there is nothing in Palm Beach County except the ARC and last summer they had their first behavior camp, they only got funding for 2weeks but it was wonderful. The ARC is hoping they will get funding again, we will have to wait and see. Haley needs a one on one because has regressed in the potty training and she is very impuslive so she needs someone to keep redirecting her. That makes it so tuff to place her anywhere. And with all the cut back i dont see how there will be anymore camps. Karmen, do you live in NJ? Take care Ronda > > > > > > For 3 yrs. now, there is nowhere in Palm Beach County for my daughter! > > > Last summer the ARC was > > > able to get funding for a 2wk behavior program, which was a great > > success! > > > My > > > daughter attended the program and it was wonderful... she was safe > > and lots > > > of > > > fun and experiences. ex: riding horse, swimming etc. I wish i could find > > > aftercare and camps for my daughter so she can learn and grow and > > get over > > > her > > > fears and also so i can start working again. Guest guest
Hi Ronda, What age is Haley? We're in Manatee Co. FL and having the same issue with being able to find anything and mostly due to the potty training regression as well. is also very impulsive and has to be monitored closely and redirected a lot, and has gotten some pretty severe behavior lately too. Guest guest
Hi Ronda, Yes, I'm in NJ...about 20 minutes from Philadelphia, PA. I know there have been so many budget cuts in state aid, but I am hoping that officials realize the importance of programs for special needs children and continue to fund those that they have, and hopefully add more to it. This is a critical area. Let me know how things are progressing with finding a camp or special needs program in your area. Take care, Karmen Re: Summer Camp/aftercare Hi Karmen, You dont have to apoligise...
