Guest guest
Hi Marilyn, You know what? I knew that they would get you up the next day..anyway they did me, and I thought I'd die from the pain! I told the nurse "I'll never walk again..".(as I was in tears from the pain) But, after a few weeks I was able to walk with no help from the walker (couldn't use "crutches" with the shoulder replacements) or a cane. Don't try this too soon or you could fall. But, after all was said and done..I have *never* once been sorry I had the knee replaced. Never. I did experience about 2 weeks of intense pain after getting home. I came home in 4 days, as Dennis did the therapy for and with me. My doctor scripted a Morphine patch, which really relieved the pain, but then I threw up. I have since learned not to have the patch put on my back and then lay in our heated waterbed. The heat makes more of the med go into the body at a faster rate, therefore making me sick. Glad you are out of ICU and on the road to recovery! You will be so happy with that new knee! Hopefully with the "new" thumb also! Hugs, (and thank you for checking in) How soon before you can get back to your reg. meds? Tricia -- hello Hello Everyone, surgery went well on March 24th and I ended up in ICU with a breathing tube down my throat until the following day (this was a precautionary thing). I sure did hate waking up to the tube down the throat but they have to do what they have to do....right? The pain in the knee was quite severe but they had me on a morphine pump so I could get some morphine with a quick push of the button. The pain relief was good most of the time but there were periods when it just wouldn't kick in or wouldn't last the recommended amount of time (this was more so with the oral pills then the morphine pump). My thumb is in a cast right now so I have no idea what it looks like but it's best in there were it is protected as I still have a habit of banging it on things especially the controls on the bed! They had me up and standing the very next day which shocked me and I personnally felt that I was being pushed to far too soon as the workout was causing extreme pain but now that some time has passed I wonder if it was that bad, well it was very bad, enough to have me in tears but I now realize that they had to push me physically in order to recovery properly. I have to say that the recovery is so different from the hip replacement as with the knee replacement the pain is much more intense but I'm able to put full weight on that leg immediately which means recovery is a much quicker process where as the hip is a slower recover as it takes time before you can become full weight bearing on that leg. It's been approx. 12 days now and I'm still amazed at how far I have come. I'm already bending at an 80 degree flexion. The rehab hospital has been very good to me actually, the nurses still remember me but not sure if any harbour any ill feelings from the complaint letter I submitted from last time or maybe they don't know if a letter was submitted or that I submitted one for that matter. I have the same physio therapist from last time and I think he is just great. My veins are failing me as they need to take blood work every day to monitor it due to the blood thinning medication and they are having problems getting the blood....ouch! It's getting late and I need some percocets (sp) before I go to bed as the pain is slowly increasing. Take care all and thanks for the well wishes, oh yeah, I get the staples out of the knee on Wednesday....not looking forward to that at all!! Marilyn mhogg69@... PS: Hi , no snow left in Toronto but some of the surrounding areas had snow yesterday but it's most likely melted by today.

I hope your does too.
