Guest guest
I had to laugh at this... my oldest son is 11, and at 5'3" is only 1/2" shorter than me. The boy eats and eats and eats. He liked those 'Big Box Meals' Taco Bell had for a while. Otherwise he wants the 3 taco meal plus a couple other things. He weighs 112 lbs now. *sigh* I'd be thrilled to be at 150!! Darned youthful metabolisms. Harrumph. Back on topic, I've been reading quite a bit about the concept of planned 'grazing' vs. a couple big meals. What I find is that in the mornings I'm not hungry. I'm also usually real busy (not a coincidence, if I'm busy I'm not hungry usually). We get up and do chores, I work out, get the kids fed, etc and it's usually noon before I slow down and get hungry. As the day goes on though I get the munchies SO bad. Especially between lunch and dinner. I'm starting to think I should have a light breakfast, and then split the rest of my lunch calorie allowance into a series of small meals. Dinner here is usually my most calorie dense meal because its our big sit down family meal. I usually do good and I've been keeping a food journal. But man, those days when the munchies hit real bad are just killer. Seems to coincide with my monthly cycle... Liz Jen / 6 small meals I really resent teenaged boys that can eat all they want and still be lanky!
Guest guest
Protein and fiber will help keep you satisfied whether you eat 6 small meals or 3 meals and a couple of snacks. Having a healthy breakfast with protein will especially start your day off well and set your metabolism up too. If you're overeating in the middle of the day then it might be because you're not eating enough early on. Planning when you'll eat and what you'll eat helps to make sure you get enough fuel when you need it and that you don't overeat too. Just jumping in with my 2 cents. Guest guest
As an interpreter, I work either "on call" being sent to Dr. offices etc.. or I freelance at a particular place for a couple of hours or more so there isn't any break room where I could put things into a Ref. Where I tutor there isn't a place for me to put my lunch/snacks either. I like veges but I don't like fruit unless it's sweet. I will try packing bags of veges and nuts again and see how that works. I guess interpreting is unique and it's hard for people that aren't interpreters to understand that you can't sign with your hands and eat at the same time (you can chew though LOL). JenSubject: Jen / 6 small mealsTo: exercisevideos Date: Sunday, March 15, 2009, 4:30 PM Jen, I can see where in your line of work fitting in the 6 small meals might be challenging. I would suggest cutting up fruit and veggies for the week on Sunday and putting them in baggies or plastic container so you can "grab-n-go". If there is a fridge/break room in your facility I like to make small containers of "krab"/imitation crab meat. Cold chicken breast isn't bad either. Hard boiled eggs are also easy to carry around and take up little space, almonds are good if you don't over do (which I do). Low-fat cottage cheese with fruit? My problem is the opposite. I get bored at work or want to put off doing something so I eat to procrastinate. All six small meals get devoured before noon sometimes, then I eat more later! BAD! This is what I need to work on. I also just eat too much Taco Bell is my biggest weakness. I can down 4 soft tacos, no problem. I need to eat half that. I really resent teenaged boys that can eat all they want and still be lanky! Guest guest
That's the theory I'm working off of as well, but so far I'm not finding a lot of rhyme or reason to when I get real hungry in the middle of the day. Sometimes I can't manage protein in the mornings (just sounds yucky), so I eat fresh fruit. Otherwise I try for yogurt or I'll scramble a couple whole eggs with a couple egg whites (really good free range pastured hen eggs from our own flock) and some ham. Sometimes we eat oatmeal (old fashioned kind). Something along those lines. I try to keep it under 300 calories. Lunch is usually a wrap (I'm kinda hooked on the SmartWraps right now... yum!) with a lean protein and lots n lots of raw spinach and/or leaf lettuce and other veggies. Been indulging with Sunchips. Try to keep it between 300-400 calories. I have a snack between lunch and dinner, usually fruit (an apple, a banana etc), sometimes yogurt or something else. Shoot for around 100 calories. Dinner is always healthy, but I let loose a little more with my carbs and serving sizes because like I said it's our big family meal and the temptation to just sit and eat a 'normal' meal is too great! Leaves me with about 1,000 calories. So, around 1,800 a day. I let myself relax on the weekends. I've been loosing between 1-2 lbs a week for the last 9 weeks (13 lbs lost total so far!!). It's not so much that I'm overeating because I'm watching what I eat very carefully. It's more along the lines that I WANT to eat and I'm hungry and it gets very annoying. Some days worse than others. I hate feeling hungry. I keep drinking water or green tea to drown the appetite... but my mind doesn't always agree with that theory either! Grrr!!! Guest guest
I eat in the morning on most days but not when I first get up. I have to be a little bit awake before I can eat. And I'm not usually very hungry. I eat All Fiber cereal to keep me regular and add more fiber to my diet, which should help me lose weight and lower my cholesterol. Guest guest
Wow, Liz, you've got some great things going on here! Your weight loss is excellent too, way to go! When you say you "WANT" to eat that makes me wonder, is it always physical hunger or is it something else ("it's time to eat" routine, boredom, tired, lonely, etc.)? If you are physically hungry then that is your body saying it needs more fuel and drowning it with liquids, as you've noticed, doesn't work that well. Try a handful of almonds, another yogurt, piece of fruit, some vegetables and low fat dip. Consider getting some healthy fats in early in the day too (through nuts, avocados, using canola, safflower, sunflower or olive oil), they'll also contribute towards feeling satisfied. If it is not physical hunger, try to figure out what it is and take care of that need. I often put on a timer for 15 minutes and make myself do anything except eat until the timer goes off. Most of the time I get so distracted that when it does go off I have to remember why I set the timer in the first place because it has become obvious I wasn't hungry. Another WW leader friend of mine says, "If hunger isn't the problem, then food isn't the answer!" Re: Jen / 6 small meals ..

Guest guest
i sympathize totally b/c its hard for me to fit 6 small meals as well. i usually do moderate for breakfast since i eat about 7:30-8 and we break at work at about 10:30. i only have 15 min to eat then i work all the way until 1:15. if i don't get a snack after work then i wind up overeating at 3-4 and dinner is usually between 5 and 6. that afternoon time is the worst for me b/c that is when i want food and i usually rationalize eating something i know is not that good for me(well i haven't had anything to eat, i just worked out blah blah). i am trying to aim to eat 4 times a day with fruits/veggies and something protein even if its a shake or yogurt.i am 2-3 servings of veggies at every meal that leaves my snacks open for other things without having to feel restricted on what i HAVE to eat to get in all my suggested servings of veggies.part of my issue is portion sizes on everything else and eating way to fast b/c i am so limited in my time. usually when i bloat up at my worst is right after having a quick meal. kassia
Guest guest
Hi , I'm exactly like you - I am hungriest earlier in the day - the rest of the time, I'm eating for psychological reasons - stress reduction, procrastination, b/c I feel I deserve it, etc.! I need to really focus in on the diet, too. I haven't been happy w/ that area in my life for a couple of months and need to do better. I know what to do, it is just finding the will to do it! Guest guest
Pick one small area of that you think you can do well with first. Make one very specific, realistic goal and work at just that. When you start getting a handle on that one thing, you'll find you're more confident and successful and you'll be able to conquer more later. Often, we try to take on too much at once, fall on our faces, feel lousy and then eat to make ourselves feel better!! :-0 If we pick one thing then we have a much better chance to succeed. Baby steps add up to giant ones more quickly than giant ones in which we keep stopping and starting over because they were too big. If you want, post your goal and we'll support you in it! Guest guest
You're so sweet, , thank you!! For that non-hungry eating, try keeping a diary and make yourself write down that you are eating when you are not hungry. If you can, write what you think you need instead. Even if you eat anyway, you'll at least be building awareness of when you really do eat. Keep track of the time too and you might see patterns. Awareness is the first step (sometimes we don't even think about eating, we just shove stuff in our mouth on auto pilot) and then you can move towards change. You're sooooooo not alone in this too. I'm sitting at a car dealership, waiting for my car to be repaired (about 3 hours and $400+ later...) and I've already eaten two Fiber One bars and drank a diet coke before noon and I had a really good breakfast this morning!! I have plenty to keep me busy, but nothing I wanted to do (I was catching up on work stuff for at least an hour or so) so I ate while I worked. If I have food near me that I like, I'm very likely to eat it. I also have a banana and haven't touched that. I'd rather have the "healthy" candy bars! I'm upset about DH too, his colitis is just not getting under control, even with steroids, and he's having a terrible time. This morning he was very upset. So, I turned to food for boredom & emotions. Did it help? NOOOOOOOOO. I'm counting the points though (going to log them right now so I don't forget). I'm owning it and will make the rest of the day better. Just wanted you to know even WW leaders struggle too! Re: Jen / 6 small meals I love it when you put your 2 cents in, ! Guest guest
Thanks, ! We're starting to think now he has celiac disease which, if we're right, will mean going gluten-free, which I dread but will do if it means he'll feel good finally. He's had tests done and they've been inconclusive but a doc he saw yesterday thinks they were more conclusive than other docs have said. He had more blood drawn yesterday so we'll see how that comes out. Speaking of eating challenges: I thought my car would just take a couple of hours so I had the dumb Fiber One bars and a banana with me (plus diet coke but I forgot my big 32 oz water bottle). Ugh. It took 6 1/2 hours and they wouldn't have been done that fast had I not bugged the guy to get me out of there because I had to make sure I was home when my kids got off the bus! Needless to say, by 3 I was beyond starving (I'd had a good breakfast at 7 and the dumb bars and the banana in between). Even all the fiber and the banana did not hold me. There was nothing to eat but junk out of the vending machine so I scanned it for the best possible choices from really awful choices. There were "baked gold fish crackers" but that didn't sound even slightly inspiring. Then there were ho-ho type cakes and mini donuts, ick. I finally got a small bag of cool ranch doritos. I haven't eaten an entire bag (snack size, like this) of doritos in YEARS. But it was more appealing and probably a bit more filling than goldfish crackers. I scarfed down every single crumb. With my diet coke it got me through the rest of my time there and I was okay (not shaky anymore anyway) until dinner. Lesson to self: plan for the worst possible circumstance by packing a healthy lunch and healthy snacks in an insulated lunch bag. If the worst does not happen, you can still eat it at home or save it for one of those long days on the road driving from one work location to another (like today!). I'm usually really great at planning & preparing but yesterday I definitely was not. I had steamed tilapia with steamed vegetables and low sodium soy sauce for dinner as a way of saving the day from being a nutritional train wreck (I'd had a good breakfast too). I even managed to stay within my WW points although the darn doritos were 6 freaking points!! (I get 18 for the day, just so you can see why I'd never want to spend 6 on something like doritos except in an emergency or desperately wanting something that dumb for some reason.) Very interesting too about the meat issues and you! Will watch for future comments on your journey. A guy in one of my WW classes is a first generation American of Chinese descent and he was telling us about all the huge variety of tofu and then brought in a wonderful dish to share with us at another week's meeting. I'd never liked tofu but this variety was firm and with the soy sauce and vegetables it was delicious! (Does anyone know if tofu and soy sauce are gluten free? I think I need to search yahoo for a gf group soon.) I have to go get the kids at school and take one to the tutor and the other to dance. Then come home and come up with something for dinner since I seem to not be planning much very well this week so far and haven't planned dinner yet either! Re: Jen / 6 small meals I'm sorry to hear about DH's situation too and that would drive anyone to nosh on extra health bars. It's comforting to know that "at weight / at goal" people too struggle with these same issues! Hugs!Food thing I'm noticing: meat is starting to really gross me out again. I threw out some pork sausage I had bought because the smell and thought of it made me gag. Even the chicken I used for breakfast tacos this morning made me queasy (I took a vacation day today to recupe from the race and just chill) I don't think I'll be vegetarian or vegan again anytime soon, but meat intake is slowing down, I think. I cooked up some tofu for Thai salad rolls this evening and it was so good and healthier tasting (to me) and I didn't feel guilty like I do when I know that an animal had to die for me to eat it. Guest guest
I had a bunch of paperwork I needed to finish for WW, including supportive note cards (25 of them!) and my lap top so I wasn't bored at least, just hungry. The service advisor was super sweet and tried his best, they were short staffed apparently. Oh well, like I said, I'll be better prepared next time. About DH, my reaction when he told me yesterday was almost elation of all the bizarre things. It was like, "okay, good, a direction to actually move in and maybe he can finally feel good again." I absolutely dread trying to do gluten-free but I do most of my cooking from scratch and he cut way back on grains when his kidney problems started last summer on the advice of a doctor so hopefully it will be less difficult than I fear... we're still waiting for test results but if they're as high as they were last year we're going to go ahead and follow that lead. He finally saw a really good doctor yesterday that I think is going to help him a lot. I hope so too. He's too young and too responsible about his health to be so bogged down by so many health problems that were not of his making. I'll let you know what happens... Guest guest
i have eaten a soft taco while waiting for a few traffic lights:) jen's difficulty finding the time to eat while on the job inspired me yesterday!... i buy fresh vegetables to cut up each week to eat for a snack or with my lunch. well, most of the time they rot in my refrigerator because i " have not had the time " to cut them up. yesterday, i challenged myself to do the task. my plan: fill up my vegetable washer with water, throw the vegetables in and spray them with vegetable wash. they sat for a while--then when i had 5 minutes i rinsed them and cut them up. i did the same with my lettuce. so now i have a bunch cut up veggies and clean lettuce. the result: a yummy salad for lunch:) stacey > > From: Pink <pinkpussycat@ ...> > > Subject: Jen / 6 small meals > > To: exercisevideos@ yahoogroups. com > > Date: Sunday, March 15, 2009, 4:30 PM > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Jen, I can see where in your line of work fitting in the 6 small meals might be challenging. I would suggest cutting up fruit and veggies for the week on Sunday and putting them in baggies or plastic container so you can " grab-n-go " . If there is a fridge/break room in your facility I like to make small containers of " krab " /imitation crab meat. Guest guest
If you don't mind the banana strings they would be easy to eat! :-) I'm on the road soooooo much lately and am experimenting with foods I can eat without distractions so that I get some kind of snack to keep me going and so I don't get too hungry. Grapes work good. If you have other ideas, let me know, seriously! :-) Jen / 6 small meals> To: exercisevideos@ yahoogroups. com> Date: Sunday, March 15, 2009, 4:30 PM> > > > > > > > > > > > > Jen, I can see where in your line of work fitting in the 6 small meals might be challenging. Guest guest
I need the money so it's worth it to me. Not everyday is that busy but this coming Monday will be...that's life. If I'm home before I go to my next job then I always have something to eat before going to work or bring a lunch/dinner with me.
