That is GREAT news about your daughter's improvement.Could you refresh my memory and possible give us some names to go along with your story? Where are you taking your daughter? So happy she got some needed improvement!!Keep us posted.Oh I almost forgot to say......it is part of the group's netiquette not to use doctor's names when sending an email to the group. You are fine sending a private email to someone asking about a specific doc. Just wanted to remind you in case you forgot or missed that.Take care.TashaMommy of twin boys- and 3 years oldFort Worth, Texas is 7.5 degrees and brace free during the day!!!Casting 14 months and bracing 10 monthsSubject: Computer back upTo: infantile_scoliosis Date: Tuesday, September 9, 2008, 6:05 PM

Hi Everyone,

Our computer has been down for a while now. We finally got technicians

out to fix the dsl line for the third time in the past couple weeks.

I've been on here reading up on what has happened and been posted over

the past few weeks that we've been without internet. I hope everyone is

doing well. Our daughter has been casted in her first cast for a couple

weeks now, and she got improvement from 40+ degrees to 27 degrees in

her first cast. However the RVAD didn't show much improvement. It's

still over 50. Thanks again to everyone for all your great advice. We

are going to contact the Philadelphia Shriners to see if they will look

over her records and if they think they can do something more. Right

now our doctor is suggesting that she will still need surgery, and I

think he said her curve rotation is rigid. , you said Dr. Asghar

in in Philadelphia once a week, is that correct? We will be going out

of town next week for a couple weeks, but want to send him her records

before we leave. Thanks again to everyone! You all give such good

information. Your kids are lucky to have such caring parents!

Hi,

Sorry about the lack of info and putting the doctors name in there. I did read the netiquette too, so I should've remembered that. Sorry everyone. Our daughter's name is Emma. My wife noticed her spinal curve when she was a little over 6 months old. At about 6 1/2 months old her first xray her cobb was 33 degrees, rvad unknown. About 3 weeks later she had an mri and that showed her cobb at a little over 40 degrees and rvad at 54+ degrees. We didn't have anymore xrays or mri done after that. Then they did an xray 5 minutes after casting and that showed the improvement. Our doctor is doing a great job, and we really like him. We just want to make sure that we're doing everything we can for her.

Hi Jay,No problem on the netiquette.......we all just try to remind it each other. Glad to have names to remember you guys.It sure never hurts to get a 2nd opinion. Is your daughter's doc a Mehta trained doctor? If not I would for sure send her info to one of the Mehta trained docs listed under the Database here for a 2nd opinion.Emma(love her name)is lucky you guys found it so early.Keep us posted.TashaMommy of twin boys- and 3 years oldFort Worth, Texas is 7.5 degrees and brace free during the day!!!Casting 14 months and bracing 10 months

Hi Darrell,

The casting went fairly well. She wasn't sedated, so as you can imagine, she was crying quite a bit. But, she eventually calmed down and we were able to keep her fairly calm. The procedure didn't take long at all, about 30 minutes. The doctor was happy with the improvement from over 40 degrees to about 27. The rotation wasn't much improved. The cast seems to be holding up fairly well. She only has a couple small irritated spots on her skin, but she's only had it on for about 2 weeks now, so I'm sure it will get worse with time. Our problem is keeping the moleskin on the cast. It seems to curl up on the edges and stick to her bib, or shirt, or whatever is over the cast. So, that's a bit irritating. It sticks fine in some places, but curls up in other places. My wife has had to peel it off and replace it in some areas. And of course the bathing thing is challenging, but I think we've got a routine down now, so it's not too bad now. How is your

son doing?

Sorry to jump in here but if you go to a craft store and get modge

podge it works. You use a small paint brush and brush it over the

edge of the moleskin where it sticks to the cast. It takes about

5minutes or so to dry and then the moleskin will no longer rollup and

makes it a little water resistant where the modge podge is. If

sent you a cast supply bag there should be some in it as

well. A light coat of it will do it. let me know if you have any

questions.

Devyn had three casts from May 8th 2007 to October 27th 2007. At

that point his curve was staying at 10degrees so they put him in a

brace. He actually gained really good correction in the brace from

that point forward. In February he was down to 8degrees and then in

May he was at 0degrees. They were making a new brace and we didn't

get it for a month because of some mis-communication. In that time he

went back to 9degrees. When we got the new brace it was not made

correctly so we went a month without anything to see what his curve

would do. It stayed the same when we went back in July. We decided to

go another month brace free and see what happens. To our surprise and

the doctors on August 8th he was completely straight. The doc said it

was the best xray he had seen. So after the cast training his spine

then the brace it corrected itself the rest of the way without help.

We now go back every two months and as long as it stays the same we

will go longer without xrays. Hope the modge podge works for you guys

the moleskin drove me crazy the first day he had his cast. So i can

deffinetly say I know how she feels. You can also get fabric to

decorate the cast and use the modge podge for it as well.

decorated Olivia's casts and I'm pretty sure there is pictures in the

photos section. Hope I answered all your questions.

Hi Jay

Im glad the casting went well.

And I could imagine! :(

Were you in the OR when Emma was casted?

Im happy to hear that she did get some correction.

I know what your talking about the moleskin I hated it too.

Im working on the bathing thing I got a couple ideas that might work. But go into the group and and type in bath it will bring up some great ideas!

Dylans doing great!

Darrell,

Glad to hear that Dylan is doing well. It's amazing how resiliant these kids are with everything going on. My wife and I were both in the room when they casted Emma. I think we both felt somewhat helpless during the process, especially when she was crying and unconsoleable. But, after a while we got her to smile and calm down. We have installed a sprayer on our kitchen sink, and also a removeable shower head in our bathroom. We have one of those thick changing pads, the vinyl contoured kind that you can put on top of a changing table or wherever---anyway, we put that on our kitchen counter, then we hang her head over the sink, I hold her head while my wife sprays her. That seems to be working okay for right now. We're experimenting with covering her cast with plastic bag during the bathing so that we don't have to worry about accidentally spraying it a little. I suppose it's just a lot of trial and error. My wife and I are trying to figure out

an easier way for her to do the bathing herself as I will be gone soon for a couple weeks for work. If wrapping her cast in plastic during the bathing works for us, if we can figure out an easier way to do that, then my wife should be able to do that herself. Have a great day!

Hi Jay,

Our daughter is 2 and we actually take a plastic laundry bag that hotels give out and cut out arms and a neck holes and slip it over the cast. It is just the right size for a toddler and this keeps the cast dry. I also tuck a small hand towel around the neck area, to help keep it dry.

Hi Jay,

I'm not sure where you go for treatment, but was your daughter

placed on a special table? I'm sure others will chime in on this,

but I'm willing to bet that her rotation wasn't improved if she

wasn't placed on a AIML table (or Risser table or traction table -

it goes by so many different names!) If your hospital doesn't have

one - you might want to look into this for the next casting. I

believe you said you were considering Philly.

is a great resourse and has the most knowledge about the

tables. I'd check with her if you have questions.

As far as the skin irratations go - I'd suggest Calendula Cream or

Aquaphor. They both helped us tremedously.

Let me know if I can be of any help. Welcome to the group!

Jay,

Can you please remind me where your daughter is treated? I have never heard of a casting being done awake. Was she suspended on the table? The correct pediatric sized table/frame is what is different with Metha casting (along with the cutouts) that addresses the rotation. Here is a news link that shows what it looks like (borrowed from previous post from Mist, Haley's Mom but it is such a great visual). If your doc is not Mehta trained with the correct table (list of those doc on the CAST site) then I would strongly suggest you consider getting treatment from one of them. My daughter didn't get good correction until we got her rotation improved, then we get to almost zero degrees- we started at around 40 degrees. Good luck!!

If the link doesn't come through, please e-mail me off line and I can send it to you (tinamorris11@...).

Thanks for the info on the table. I don't know for sure, but I think it was a Risser table, I would have to double check with my wife, she has a much better memory than me. My wife asked so many questions that sometimes I forget what the doctor said, but she would remember. It was metal framed table. Our daughter was laid on a strip and they used straps to manipulate her body how they wanted it. I hope it's the correct type of table. I wish I could see a picture of an AMIL table, then I would be able to tell. I tried typing it into the search engine, but couldn't find a picture. I do believe her spine rotation is very rigid. And I think our doctor wasn't expecting to see much improvement with the rotation. Which is why we want to make sure we get a second opinion to make sure. You mentioned calendula cream for the skin...can you get that at walmart or a store like that, or do I have to order it? Thanks.

Liz,

That;s a great idea to use the laundry bag. We use a small trash bag. But, those laundry bags are pretty thick and sturdy, I bet they work great. I never would have thought of that. Thanks for the tip!

Jay,They are the perfect size and they are thicker than 'kitchen garbage' bags, so you aren't trying to deal with all the extra thin plastic with a squirmy child. We were just at the Embassy Suites for our cast change in SLC and they have switched to a more environmentally friendly thinner bag!! So now I have searched all of our suitcases and stashed the supply of 'old' bags!!!You might find the calendula cream at Walmart or Target or a drug store, usually in the diaper area or 'health care' area. It would be at a health food store or a Whole Foods if you have one of those. I prefer the "California Baby" brand and get it online at BabyCenter.com. It was all I could use on my oldest child who had terrible skin issues as a baby.Liz

Liz,

Thanks for the info and link on the skin cream. I will let my wife know tomorrow and I'm sure she'll have some ordered before the day is over. You're right about the laundry bags being sturdier, but now it looks like they will be harder to come by. But that is a good idea, next time we're at a hotel, I think we'll have to use them as well. They're thicker, and they're free...can't get much better than that!

I'm glad you mentioned that .... I wanted to also add that Rochester has 2 excellent casting docs that are wonderful with ET and they have the correct table as well... I'm not sure where you live, Jay, which is why I mention this alternative to Philly. I live in NJ very close to Philly, but I take my daughter to Rochester. Feel free to e-mail me off-line if you have any questions...... Steph

Wow what was your docs reasoning for not sedating Emma? You are alot braver than me there is no way I could have done that. I have never thought that would be possible. Because they have to manipulate the spine. Does she have shoulder straps or is it under her arms? Does Emma have cutouts for the tummy and chest and one in the back. Does Spica Table sound familiar? What did your doc call this cast? Sorry for all the ???

Bathing will just take alittle time it is easier in a underarm cast then one over the shoulders. Lots of towels.

Hi Darrell,

The didn't give a reason for not sedating her when my wife asked. They said they don't sedate anyone. We were very unhappy about that, but thought we'd give it a go and see what happened. Luckily, the procedure was fairly quick, and once it was over, she was smiling again. Her cast is under her armpits. She does have a cutout in the front, but not the back. And you don't have to apologize for asking questions, I don't mind, and besides, you've all been a great help on this site and we really appreciate it. I honestly can't remember what the table was called. My wife was asking most of the questions and I heard most answers, but it was so much info to take in, and I also read so much info on the internet that I can't remember if they called it a risser, or spica or if I just read that somewhere. My wife thinks its a risser table.? I think that's what she thought they said. As for her cast, our doctor just calls it a corrective cast. A person in

the casting room also mentioned corrective serial casting. Bathing has starting to get a little better, now that we're getting the hang of it. I don't think we'd do so well if the cast went over her shoulders...I would think that would be more difficult. And you're right, lots and lots of towels.
