So what happens when you have normal sodium in both the 24 hour and one time spot but your aldosterone levels are high.My doctor always tests my aldsoterone with my renin and renin is where it should be but aldosterone not. Should aldosterone also be checked urine or just blood.

Pam

Sodium (Na) in Urine

A test for sodium in the urine is a 24-hour test or a one-time (spot) test that checks how much sodium is in the urine. Sodium is both an electrolyte and a mineral. It helps keep the water (the amount of fluid inside and outside the body's cells) and electrolyte balance of the body. Sodium is also important in how nerves and muscles work.

Most of the sodium in the body (about 85%) is found in blood and lymph fluid. Sodium levels in the body are partly controlled by a hormone called aldosterone, which is made by the adrenal glands. Aldosterone levels tell the kidneys when to hold sodium in the body instead of passing it in the urine. (See a picture of the adrenal glands or the kidneys .) Small amounts of sodium are also lost through the skin when you sweat.

Most foods have sodium naturally in them or as an ingredient in cooking. Sodium is found in table salt as sodium chloride or in baking soda as sodium bicarbonate. Many medicines and other products also have sodium in them, including laxatives, aspirin, mouthwash, and toothpaste.

Too much sodium in the diet may raise blood pressure in some people. For those who have high blood pressure, eating foods with a lot of sodium makes their chance of heart disease, stroke, and kidney damage higher. Heart failure gets worse when too much sodium is eaten. It increases the amount of water the body holds in and this causes swelling of the legs and hands. Some people have problems when they eat more than 4,000 milligrams (mg) of sodium per day.

Low sodium levels are uncommon and most often occur as a side effect of taking medicines that make you urinate more, such as diuretics. Severe diarrhea or vomiting or heavy sweating may also cause low sodium levels.

If you have no HTN and no medical disorders due to high aldos, then medical standards should be changed such that you aldos range falls into normal range!

I suspect that high aldos indicates some kind of sexual hormones disorders...like high or low testastrone in men and I don't know what in women!!!

Thanks.  If after 4 years of CT scans on my adrenal gland and two ultrasounds,a tumor is there, it is really in there deep.  I am seeing a endrocine surgeon for high parathryoid levels and he is also exploring a tumor in my adrenals.  So we shall see.

No goodness no.. no military doctors.  Hubby is retired from the military and I have been seeing civilian doctors since 1995.  Each time I told them something was wrong, they told me it was menopause and tried to put me on anti depressants. Finally found a naturopath and through their testing we found out my adrenals and thryoid were overworked.  Luckily I found a doctor who sat down, listened, did a bunch of saliva testing and blood work to find out I had hasimoto's thryoid.  we contined on that was when we learned about my aldosterone and am cortisol levels.   we both learned a lot and it was my gyn that actually caught my parathryoid issues.

Heaven forbid I diagnosis myself.  I might get referred to as a cyber condriac againPam

Being a ciber condriac might be beter than having menopause for 16 years, is

that a record! I was asking about the military on a positive note for a change.

I am treated by the local VA and they apparently can't hire a Nepherologist so

they go the " rent a Doc " route. I got lucky and found one who knew how to spell

PA!

Sounds like they are trying and you are providing alot of opportunity! Good

Luck!

Wrong. Too much Na raises BP IN any human and too little causes death from low BP Tiped sad Send form miiPhone ;-)May your pressure be low!CE Grim MDSpecializing in DifficultHypertension

Severe diarrhea or vomiting or heavy sweating may also cause low sodium levels.

unfortunately for me, our VA will not treat me since I am a dependent spouse and its a 2 hour drive to Ft or 3 1/2 to Ft benning for a hospital. When it comes to my health, I am very proactive

thanks for your helpPam

Being a ciber condriac might be beter than having menopause for 16 years, is that a record! I was asking about the military on a positive note for a change. I am treated by the local VA and they apparently can't hire a Nepherologist so they go the " rent a Doc " route. I got lucky and found one who knew how to spell PA!

Sounds like they are trying and you are providing alot of opportunity! Good Luck!

- 64 yo morb. ob. male - 12mm X 13mm rt. a.adnoma with previous rt. flank & testicle pain. I have decided against an adrenalectomy at this time since Meds. are working so well. Current BP: 130/77

Other Issues/Opportunities: COPD w/ft Oxygen, OSA w Bi-Pap settings 13/19, DM2. and PTSD

Meds: Duloxetine hcl 80 MG, Mirtazapine 15 MG, Metoprolol Tartrate 200 MG, Metformin 2000MG and Spironolactone 75 MG.

Again I do not recommend further Aldo testing as long as u are doing well DASHING. also aldo causes Ca problems so remind your team to look it up as well. Tiped sad Send form miiPhone ;-)May your pressure be low!CE Grim MDSpecializing in DifficultHypertension

Thanks. If after 4 years of CT scans on my adrenal gland and two ultrasounds,a tumor is there, it is really in there deep. I am seeing a endrocine surgeon for high parathryoid levels and he is also exploring a tumor in my adrenals. So we shall see.

My surgeon is doing this on his own due to all my high readings.  I am dashing and my sodium is well within limits but I also have issues with my parathryoid which I am letting him deal withTired of being sick and the sprio is not helping except lowering my BP

Again I do not recommend further Aldo testing as long as u are doing well DASHING. also aldo causes Ca problems so remind your team to look it up as well. Tiped sad Send form mi
