Guest guest
With the store bought bottles of Kombucha, if I had to go there(and only if) I would look for a non pastuarized, unflavored, and natural Kombucha for a started. Then I would pour some out to drink, leaving maybe half. Then cover with a coffee filter and allow two weeks to see what happens. It may form a weak scoby or not. If it formed the weak scoby, then Iwould proceed to add some tea solution to the fermented beverage and the weak scoby, in a slightly larger container ( double the size). It would be easier to look in the links (down at the bottom), and ask them that show up closer to you for a Scoby and tea solution. Yet, Keep asking here, too. Im sure someone close will respond. M If I could I would mail you one from land, although I just started back up last month, and am still filling Empty containers. > > I tried to start my own scoby from store bought tea. It is not working. I need a starter mushroom. I used to buy bottled kt before I was laid off. Now I want to ferment my own to save money and for the hobby aspects. My daughter has enco and does so much better on kt. Really, she needs this stuff to function!! > > Can someone help me out with a starter mushroom scoby, PLEASE? I live in the San Francisco area but maybe one can be mailed? I'll pay the sipping or pass along the good karma. > > Thank you so soo much!! >
Guest guest
I do not see a scoby in there. It is 18 days old. Can I just try adding sweet tea? ________________________________ To: original_kombucha Sent: Sunday, February 19, 2012 10:36 AM Subject: Re: I'm new to brew  With the store bought bottles of Kombucha, if I had to go there(and only if) I would look for a non pastuarized, unflavored, and natural Kombucha for a started. Guest guest
I suspect the problem is the store-bought stuff is now (since the reformulation) pasteurized and doesn't have enough live microbes to form a viable culture. I too have failed to get GTs and others started from scratch (using just KT and some sweetened tea). I did get some localbucha on tap, and that is what i successfully started my booch from. Wish you good luck on your quest to get brewing. - Woody
Guest guest
I have no idea from your post what store bought tea you used. However I have made several starter scobies using GT's Organic Raw Kombucha with no problems at all. This was after the FDA made them reformulate it. Perhaps it is the tea you are using. I use a quart mason jar,8 ounces of the GT's and a pint of sweetened tea. Jack > > I tried to start my own scoby from store bought tea. It is not working. I need a starter mushroom. Guest guest
Regular tea will do, green or black. You could get picky and do Organic, or not; That is your choice. Its great that you got good technique and produced scobys from GT raw KT. Regular sugar will work too. Please forgive the debate over sugars. > > > > I tried to start my own scoby from store bought tea. It is not working. I need a starter mushroom. I used to buy bottled kt before I was laid off. Guest guest
I've only tried starting up a culture with GTs twice, and both times it failed. I used the exact same tea and methodology as i use with KT from my batch brews (or hotel). Using the latter i have started dozens of cultures with 100% success rate. All i do is put 1 unit of KT and 2 units of sweetened tea in a jar. The GTs i used were flavored, they didn't have unflavored. Not sure why flavoring should matter though, i started my booch from some flavored localbucha. There may be some live cultures in GTs, but it doesn't seem to be nearly as active as unpasteurized KT. Of course i realize my sample size is small, so i hesitate to draw conclusions on this limited data. - Woody
Guest guest
YaHoo. The gift of a Scoby brings a lifetime of happiness, and Tea too! > > Thanks for the tips and advice. My kitchen is chilly this time of year so they may be a contributing factor. > > > I am getting a scoby today from a neighbor.
