starting kombucha with no scoby

<<<Is there anybody who can send me a Scoby to start my Homebrew?? I live in

Carlsbad. I was wondering if I can create my own baby scoby with just

buying like GT's Raw Kombucha, putting it in a wide mouth mason jar and

covering with cheesecloth for say, 10 days or so?? any feedback from

anyone?>>>

I have seen the various recipes and methods that others have used.

But my little trap jar (for fruit flies) of plain kombucha.....my own

brew grew its own scoby!

A tiny little baby food jar with just about 1/2 cup of KT in it.....and

a cute little scoby grew. It did not grow until there were no more

fruit flies. The last time I threw out the fruit fly mix and poured in

some new KT, when I went back to check it after a week or three (who can

keep up!?) there were no fruit flies but there was this cute little tiny

scoby totally covering the top.

I wouldn't use it because the top of the jar was not covered with any

sort of cloth barrier (so as to catch the fruit flies) so no telling

what else bacteria wise or just plain dust is in there. But it sure was

neat to see. But maybe that was what helped the scoby to grow.....the

exposure to whatever is naturally in the air......right next to the

brewing container (which is of course covered).
