UNT to Host Second Annual " Adventures in Autism " Conference

The University of North Texas Autism Intervention Program will host its

second annual conference on Saturday, November 3, 2007, from 9 a.m. to 2

p.m. on the Denton campus. The conference, called " Adventures in Autism

II, " will offer a variety of presentations and workshops by local and

national experts aimed at parents, teachers, and others interested in

learning more about autism and effective interventions for schools,

homes, and other settings. Breakout sessions will address " In-Home

Parent Training " , " Homework Strategies " , " Sign Language " , " Using ABA

Tools in the Classroom " , " Interaction Strategies for Toddlers with ASD " ,

" Evidence-Based Practices for Autism Classrooms " , and many more topics

designed to encourage and enlighten those who live and work with

children across the autism spectrum.

The conference, co-sponsored by the UNT Center for Autism Research and

Education (CARE) and student chapter of the Council for Exceptional

Children (SCEC), will also feature a luncheon with a keynote address by

bestselling writer and internationally renowned researcher Dr.

Schreibman, author of The Science and Fiction of Autism. The cost of

attending both the conference and luncheon is $75. The price of the

conference only is $40, and the luncheon with keynote speaker only is

$40. Proceeds from this event will be used to provide scholarships for

students pursuing careers in special education.

The UNT Center for Autism Research and Education, jointly housed within

UNT's Special Education Program and Department of Behavior Analysis, is

a multidisciplinary center of excellence, committed to conducting high

quality research, training, and direct services with a focus on

diversity, collaboration, and dissemination within the local and global

community. CARE includes federally-funded projects providing master's-

and Ph.D.-level training in autism intervention and research to

teachers, parents, and other service providers throughout Texas and the

Southwest United States. Students in the program can receive

scholarship support to complete a master's degree in special education

with a specialization in autism, or a six-course Graduate Academic

Certificate in autism intervention. More than 125 students will have

graduated from the program since its inception in 2002.

The Student Council for Exceptional Children is the only chapter of the

national professional organization for special educators in the DFW

metroplex. SCEC conducts monthly meetings on the UNT campus and

participates in a variety of volunteer and support activities for

children with disabilities and their families. For more information

Dr. Schreibman, one of the country's leading experts in behavioral

treatment approaches, draws on her extensive clinical experiences with

children with autism and their parents in her book The Science and

Fiction of Autism (Harvard University Press, 2005). In her book, Dr.

Schreibman arms her readers with research-based knowledge to effectively

deal with the oftentimes confusing onslaught of information - good, bad,

deficient, and irrelevant - about autism and its causes and treatments.

Dr. Schreibman is Distinguished Professor of Psychology and Director of

the Autism Research Program at the University of California at San

Diego.
