Guest guest
Raw milk from cows should taste delicious all the time. There should certainly not be a rotting smell. I second the suggestion of seeing the farm. If they aren't set up to sell to the public, but just a family " selling off the farm " to a small clientele, their chilling and storage may be sloppy. Flavor is affected by many factors: feed is one. Our favorite ration for a good flow and good flavor from our goats is a mixture of some dairy ration, milo, alfalfa, beet shreds and oats. We allow our bucks to run with the does, so the milk can get a bit goaty sometimes; when they happens we tighten up the ration toward alfalfa and beet pulp and are more careful about chilling. I make kefir with older or less tasty milk, as it doesn't matter as much. Please keep seeking, and let the previous farmer know about the quality problems. Plastic milk jugs are not ideal, however we buy our milk that way for consistency's sake and hope that the other diet changes we make, and the essential oils that we use to get the toxins out of our bodies, and the benefits of drinking raw will outweigh any contamination from plastic. And we drink it fast enough that the time for contamination is short indeed. Laurie Ann Spoiled by Swan Bros' Dairy in Claremore OK
Guest guest
Even a small amount of weeds of some types can adversely affect flavor of milk. And cows will eat them, no matter what the total nutrition available to them. Ask anyone who has had bitter sneeze weed, wild garlic or pig weed on the farm. Years ago, my grandfathers both pastured the cows during the day and shut them in a stable with hay and oats or wheat bran at night. The morning milk would be good.Night milk was given to calves or pigs.Bill
