My endro is so receptive and orders tests that I find on the internet that could help my problem. Same with my GYN.. very open people. Those are the doctors I like to surround myself with. If I hadn't we would never have found PA and now the parathyroid problem. I tend to read if I am breathing - even now my laptop has 2 other windows open to medscape etc as I type this, so I came across PA. I am certain I read Dr G's papers and others on the subject as I had asked about it with some, though I don't recall any specific articles. I had some run-ins with hyperthyroidism too and wasn't always clear headed or dealing with only PA, but I once even bought my own spiro once off the internet when I suspected it in myself, but it was right after a serious flu and hyperthyroid episode so I am certain that I didn't take it long enough or see a difference then due to complicating factors. As far as PA goes I was always given the brush off even when casually discussing it - even with my supervising doc, and I trusted they were experienced and that PA or other adrenal issues were not likely to them so I think I just followed the mindset and felt I was overreacting and it was too rare since they had more experience (well some did - I saw plenty of residents and new docs too over the years - I have been a PA 10 years and paramedic before that for 15, my supervising doc I worked with for many years was 25 years plus though) so I put it to the back of my mind. When I joined this list and saw Dr G's main article on PA it was hauntingly familiar so I am certain I read it sometime somewhere. My endo was familiar with Conn's, but didn't do any testing right. I was on multiple meds at the time and stopped none and I tried to show him the paper and asked about the testing and he told me to just go "have it done". He is known for kicking people out who question him and I could tell he was getting offended. So I humored him and just "did it" and he says things were "borderline" but I haven't got my records yet from him so I never saw my own labs - and that was last Dec I believe. He ordered a bunch of test like MRI's, MIBGA scans etc, but money - and too many tests with dye lately (I want to keep my kidneys) - I haven't been able to do them. He made the dx of Conn's based on those borderline results and mostly he said from my immediate and profound reaction to the spiro. But It was a cardiologist who had an "ah ha" moment and started the spiro first. 2 doses of spiro and I went from 180/130 + in his office to 120 something/80 in a day. As long as I DASH and spiro it stays fine (and take my K) - get over the salt limit and up it goes immediately. I could not get them to see I WAS NOT depressed or any more stressed than any other American and after they would do a cardiac workup, that's what they blamed a 160/120 BP on and just added another medicine to the arsenal - but never spiro - and always tried a worthless SSRI on me, which I refused to take or even fill. So I should have been better about looking for PA in myself or even in the patients I saw (I worked alone as the only provider in a rural county in Texas for many years - my doc was 2 hours to the west) and I had a few young men with HTN I recall that wasn't real responsive to other meds. Either way anyone with resistant or hard to treat BP I got to the doc or a specialist, so no one was neglected. BUT...... I do look for it now and don't wait for someone else to NOT find it Surely no doc ever made any of you feel like they were overreacting........right? CE Grim MD LOL at your story about the doctor and the "guest" chairs None of my current doctors pull any of that behind-the-desk stuff with me, but I've definitely experienced it in the past.I think your suggestion about ordering the test "so we can rule it out" is a good one, and I'm planning to go with that. My problem is that while in writing I can be forceful and articulate, in person I'm a lot more easily intimidated. Is it his belief or do the tests say you do not have PA I dont recall all of the results.How far away is your Dr from the internet? Some seriously told her, out of my earshot, that I needed "less stress" (don't we all?) and I was depressed or something along those lines when we'd go in to the ER or office in Texas. That's how we ended up in Arizona really as she thought maybe moving close to family and a change of pace would help since they were telling her it was nothing serious. I knew it was something physical and not mental - I think most of us do if we listen to our intuition and bodies that are talking to us - and that something wasn't right, but we moved and I only got worse. So she comes with me now, but has the same caution I do when someone offers their certain "diagnosis" of what's wrong. I showed my endro and my nephorlogist your peer reviewed article. My endro was like wish this guy was closer and I could have worked with him. My nephrologist... any one can get an article written for the right amoutn of money. When I supply information and highlight Dr. Grim's background, training and experience and profesional acknowledgements and they come back with, " Anyone can publish on the internet, etc, etc " I'm afraid I would loose my cool and come right out of my chair, exclaim something like, " Do you think I am so stupid to not have validated my sources, why don't you do the same before you pass judgement! " As the old saying goes, " Keep your mouth shut and let them wonder how ignorant you are; Open it and prove it beyond all doubt! " (If that's not the quote, it's a new one and you can credit it to me!) " If you are going to eat crow, pause long enough to ensure you are starting at the right end! " That indeed might be an original that I used for years in the business world! Guess I better cool it, it's still 4-days till I see my therapist!;>) I can't stop yet, I've just got to share one more. When I was in the military, I had a Chief Master Sgt. at DaNang who openly preached and practicing that he would teach you anything he knew that you wanted to learn, he didn't feel threatened because by the time you learned it he would have learned something new. I learned alot that year. (Dr. Grim reminds me alot of him!) I adopted that and it served me well in 30 years of business. I feel it is germaine here because we are supplying these doctors info and an education on a silver platter and all they want to do is turn it over and see if it is real silver! Shame, SHAme, SHAME! Ok, Rant over and I feel better! - 64 yo morb. ob. male - 12mm X 13mm rt. a.adnoma with previous rt. flank & testicle pain. I have decided against an adrenalectomy at this time since Meds. are working so well. I had a brother who had " rented kidneys " (They last 10 to 13 years on norm.) His were starting to fail at 13 yrs when he went to the hospital with a ruptured colon (they attributed to taking anti-rejection meds.) He didn't come out and death cert. lists " acute renal failure " ! I wouldn't make any excuses for him, he needs to show you proof positive. I had a brother who had " rented kidneys " (They last 10 to 13 years on norm.) His were starting to fail at 13 yrs when he went to the hospital with a ruptured colon (they attributed to taking anti-rejection meds.) He didn't come out and death cert. lists " acute renal failure " ! I wouldn't make any excuses for him, he needs to show you proof positive. (You should have others asking for proof as you work your way up the Donoe List!) - 64 yo morb. ob. male - 12mm X 13mm rt. a.adnoma with previous rt. flank & testicle pain. I have decided against an adrenalectomy at this time since Meds. are working so well. She told me, " You get up at 11, are on the computer all day and the only stress you have is deciding what to eat for lunch and when to let the dogs (4 Boston Terriers) out! Any less stress and you'll have dirt in your face! (I aways thought the saying was " Mud on your face " !) Is part of their requirements to get into the field that they must be insecure? When I supply information and highlight Dr. Grim's background, training and experience and profesional acknowledgements and they come back with, "Anyone can publish on the internet, etc, etc" I'm afraid I would loose my cool and come right out of my chair, exclaim something like, "Do you think I am so stupid to not have validated my sources, why don't you do the same before you pass judgement!" As the old saying goes, "Keep your mouth shut and let them wonder how ignorant you are; Open it and prove it beyond all doubt!" (If that's not the quote, it's a new one and you can credit it to me!) "If you are going to eat crow, pause long enough to ensure you are starting at the right end!" That indeed might be an original that I used for years in the business world!Guess I better cool it, it's still 4-days till I see my therapist!;>)I can't stop yet, I've just got to share one more. When I was in the military, I had a Chief Master Sgt. at DaNang who openly preached and practicing that he would teach you anything he knew that you wanted to learn, he didn't feel threatened because by the time you learned it he would have learned something new.
