Guest guest
The problem is that anybody can claim to be, well, anybody, really, over the internet. I was hugely skeptical about this site at first, because really, a Yahoo group? Not even a dedicated website? Anybody can set that up and claim legitimacy. The only way that I came to trust this site is by reading it Every. Single. Day. Which I do, and which has taught me that this is the best source for PA info in existence.Realistically, no practicing physician is going to have the time to lurk on a Yahoo forum reading enough posts to become convinced that you are who you say you are, Dr. Grim. I've made my living in the internet space for a long time now, and I'll be the first to tell people do not *ever* believe what you read on the web until you have proof that it is legitimate.I'm not among those here who has an extra $500 to enlist your services at this time, but I do have a question - for those who do, how do you prove to their doctors that you are who you claim to be?Surely you understand my point here, Dr. Grim. On several occasions I've seen you write something along the lines of "I'm from Missouri. SHOW ME."I think that's all our doubtful doctors are asking: they want proof that you are who you say you are.> > > > > > >> > > > > > > > Kind of funny. Guest guest
I get that, , but what actual proof do we have to give our doctors that the man behind this site actually wrote those articles, and is who he says he is? I mean, I have no proof, not that I know of. But over time I've developed a sense of trust. My doctors don't have time to do that. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Kind of funny. Guest guest
Yes a search for Dr grim will find 1000s of hits. But try searching for Evolution of PA then add Grim. I did find one outside of the of the site but you have to pay for it. No matter if it is on group site or google still not likely to get non Internet user Dr to read it. From information my nephew who works at the VA told me most on the VA Dr don't believe what any one brings them from the Internet. My guess is when a Dr says he doesn't know of Dr Grim they are not keeping up to date on treating B/P anyway. Most likely have no interest in learning any thing new related to to B/P. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Kind of funny. Guest guest
You're right, but no doc can take the time to validate every patient that has their own diagnosis off the internet. Now, we are examples of system failure for some time to diagnosis, but for every one of us that had an idea what was wrong from our own research, there are likely 10x that many that come in to the doc with something they are certain of that is wrong. Patients have a strong tendency to "find" that diagnosis that validates something in their life that has run amok - weight seems to be the biggest issue with people - fatigue a close second. It seems nearly everyone who you see tends to claim they ate/eat perfect, they exercise (or they did but it "didn't work"), and everything about their habits is so perfect so it "has to be hormonal". And we know that's just not true, but sometimes it is. But they come in with a self diagnosis that says why they are not the same 18 year old cheerleader weight now at age 40. It's never diet or exercise to the patient, or the intake to burn off ratio, but something else. So it's difficult for all really. Docs ignore to much that is valid and good and patients often want the answer they want and nothing else from info off the internet. Guest guest
I'm not sure that anyone is interested but I will try again! Last year, I created a wiki for us to use to educate others about PA. Unlike this web portal, wikis are searchable on the Internet and can be viewed by the general public. In a closed forum such as Yahoo Groups, only members have access to the knowledge.. The beauty of a wiki is that WE develop it collaboratively. We can continue to use this site for discussion but can post important info on the wiki. I am including the link to the wiki for those who are interested. If you have other ideas, I am open. There are other options for web presence including a basic website. Personally, I think that our collective intelligence is best served when we collaborate using a wiki or similar web portal. Let me know if you are interested. Guest guest
Ideally yes and a reasonable expectation. Reality though doesn't always match what should be. If they took to heart the things we brought up our road would have been much smoother. Were just talking reality here and not defending anything. How we change it is the million dollar question. I had one doc, cardiologist, who, apparently believes you only answer a question or speak when spoken to. He wanted no conversation and flipped out (I can't adequately describe his bizarre flip out, but my wife was with me this visit so I am glad she saw how he was) when I thanked him for something. I did report him though as his issues surely went deeper than me and he didn't need to be seeing patients if something like that messed him up as bad as it did (after the flip out he mumbeled for 5 minutes while trying to write, over and over again, "I am just trying to help; I am just trying to help......"). Like I have said it is almost a disease in and of itself, this poor medical care lately. Sometimes it as if these people hate people, but went to school because they could. Subject: Re: Internet legitimacyTo: hyperaldosteronism Date: Sunday, July 10, 2011, 1:07 PM I have been told more then once I have no idea what you have. What do you think it is. So if i can show my Dr information as to what I think it is and why he may have missed the Dx I would think they would at least look at it. > > > > > > > > > >> > > > > > > > > > > Kind of funny. Francis, please be real careful to heed 's warning. I'm not too bashful but feel there is some protection from the group and knowing Dr. G.,etal will zap anyone using our files and site unappropriately. Having spent a carear in IS, being specifically responsibile for much of the security and watching the internet grow from it's infancy I can't caution you enough to err on the side of caution! Guest guest
Thanks for the notes. And how do I provide that proof? It would take DNA typing of some sort to prove that I am who I am.I am happy to send my intro to the site to any physician and perhaps I should recommend that all take this to their health are team?Perhaps I should switch to a iChat venus live but that will cost $$ for my time. If folks have to pay up front are they more likely to "believe"? I see no reason a dedicated website (which costs $$$$) helps with this issue. I think the best way is to have interested folks do a pubmed on Grim CE and see what they come up with. They can also search the citation index to see how often my articles are quoted.I have made presentations reg my research on PA to medical groups as well since about 1967. These include local, national, and international research meetings: Endocrinology (last in 2006), Nephrology, Cardiology, Epidemiology and Hypertension specialty groups. I have just been elected as a Fellow to the American Society of HTN, not to mention Am College of Physicians and the American Society of Hypertension. CE Grim MDThe problem is that anybody can claim to be, well, anybody, really, over the internet. Grim. I think if they just skim my CV that would be a big help. I've made my living in the internet space for a long time now, and I'll be the first to tell people do not *ever* believe what you read on the web until you have proof that it is legitimate.I'm not among those here who has an extra $500 to enlist your services at this time, but I do have a question - for those who do, how do you prove to their doctors that you are who you claim to be?Are you talking about how does the patient prove they are who they say they are? or how to they prove that I am who I say I am?Surely you understand my point here, Dr. Grim. On several occasions I've seen you write something along the lines of "I'm from Missouri. SHOW ME."I think that's all our doubtful doctors are asking: they want proof that you are who you say you are.Again how do your suggest I do this?> > > > > > >> > > > > > > > Kind of funny. Guest guest
Wishful thinking here, but - I think the best way to make this site, and its mission, appear legitimate enough would be to actually start a nonprofit hyperaldosteronism association, buy a domain name for it, have a website built, and provide full contact information (not just a Yahoo email address) and CV info that our doctors could easily navigate to. (Dream big, if I'm going to dream, right?) Even the pheochromacytoma folks have a website: http://www.pheoparatroopers.org And I think they are even more rare than us! > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Kind of funny. Guest guest
You have none that I know of. How do you know the Dr. you are seeing is really a Dr. and studied where he said he did and got certified in what he says he is certified in? Some state boards and hospitals do not really check this very carefully.Any Dr out there can claim to practice any speciality with actually having been trained in it. If he is in a hospital then they may document that the training was verified and he/she passed the proper tests at one time. You have not way to know if the Dr. is current in your problem unless perhaps the were just Boarded in Hypertension in the last year or so.I am lic in WI so they can check that but again WI does not have my DNA to prove who I am.I am applying for lic in NV to retire there and they are validating every day of my medical career by contacting original sources going back to 1964 at least. I have submitted finger prints as well. Now there is an idea. Maybe if I send my thumbprint that will prove how I am? Or my whole set of FBI fingerprint cards.I forgot they can also google my name for book Chapters that are not in pubmed but are in my CV in our files. They can also lookup my abstracts (250+) accepted for presentation in by CV as well. Or better yet they can email me with a question.Maybe I need to get on Dr. Oz?CE Grim MDI get that, , but what actual proof do we have to give our doctorsthat the man behind this site actually wrote those articles, and is whohe says he is? I mean, I have no proof, not that I know of. But overtime I've developed a sense of trust. My doctors don't have time to dothat.> > > > > > > >> > > > > > > > > Kind of funny. Guest guest
And how does a wiki prove I am how I say I am?I don't have time for world wide access but could do it if I go paid. Even tho retired I don't work for free.So maybe we could set up a site for $1 a question. Now that might be good.If you look at my CV you will find I have published on as many known causes of HTN (and some unknown) as almost any other HTN specialist I know. This includes PA, RAS, Cushings, Pheo. Autonomic problems, renal disease, salt sensitivity, renin bio and radio immmunoassay, saline infusion, renal artery surgery and balloon dilation, Page kidney, licorice, GRA, malignant HTN, renal failure and HTN, new drugs in HTN, Stress and HTN, sociology and HTN, Race and HTN, slavery and HTN, Lunchables and HTN and sodium metabolism in sheep. Not Baaad if I say so myself. CE Grim MD I'm not sure that anyone is interested but I will try again! Our wiki: http://connsyndromeproject.pbworks.com/w/page/16377232/FrontPage------------------------------------------------------------- In hyperaldosteronism , Bingham wrote:>> Not just anyone can publish anything they want in a professional medical journal. The journals are incredibly selective and articles go through a peer-review to be worthy to print, and then they enlist an editorial board (who often then get their names on the paper/article) to spruce things up. The internet is like a phone call where anyone could claim to be anyone or say anything or post anything. To find a doctor look up the state website. ALL states have sites where you can check license status of a doc (or physician assistant for that matter). So if someone fools us shame once, but twice? shouldn't happen. In Dr G's case his name is all over professional journals and it's safe to say no one gets into the journals without some credibility and professional knowledge.> > > > > > Subject: Re: internet legitimacy> To: hyperaldosteronism > Date: Saturday, July 9, 2011, 9:00 PM> > >  > > > > The problem is that anybody can claim to be, well, anybody, really, over the internet. Guest guest
note they have not way for medical professionals to register.Setting up one of these is not my area of expertise but would be happy to provide professional consultation (paid) for such a group.I keep plenty busy with our limited Yahoo group. Guest guest
IF you or anyone else goes to pubmed and enters Grim CE you will find 175 (more in the mill). 27 of these you can get full text articles from the Nat Lib of Med. FREE. Six are listed as reviews. The are also free I think. Someday Google Books (Gutenburg project?) will make everything printed available for free. Now if your search hyperaldosteronism you will find 7465 articles. Most of which I have probably read at one time or another. over 900 of these are for free and 1272 are reviews. So if you or your health care team wants to get up to my speed it may take a while. Good reading and thinking. Hope you and they have as much fun as I have had doing this for 48 years.CE Grim MDBut the only place we have access to Dr Grim's articles is on this site> > > > > > > >> > > > > > > > > Kind of funny. Guest guest
Dr who chose not to use the Internet are not going to come to this group or any other web site we may set up. The wiki should make it easier for those that have PA get good information without having to join group. It way lead them to this group. The NORD site while it has good information on it is hard to find the information. They only let you discuss something for 90 days so every 90 days you have to start a new discussion. Only we may get Dr to read any thing is to bring the journal that the article is in. I would guess if they didn't read it the first time not likely to read what we bring in. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Kind of funny. Guest guest
But for some questions may have been asked 40 years ago. We know of one Dr that was thought a little over 12 yeas ago by Dartmouth med school she might see one case of PA in her like time. Seem she has been lucky and has see that one all ready. So by Dartmouth teaching she will most likey not see any one else with PA. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Kind of funny.
