We all know Wisconsin is the center of the dairy universe, and from Sept. 29-Oct. 3 it's extra-official: The World Dairy Expo returns.

The WDE takes place at the Alliant Energy Center, and every dairy-related thing you can think of—from modern milking technology, to genetic engineering methods, to frozen embryos and semen—will be on display.

The main draw is perhaps the hundreds of primo, beefy specimens: Ayrshire, Brown Swiss, Guernsey, Holstein, Jersey, Milking Shorthorn, and Red & White cows strutting their stuff in hopes of a blue ribbon. Chatting with farmers is always a good time, and educational seminars on the state of the industry will fine-tune your brain on relevant issues. In 2008, 726 exhibitors and 68,317 attendees showed up, so this is a massive event with an international draw.

Maybe best of all, a special concession area will sell Wisconsin cheeses, and 14 more concession stands will provide the usual (not necessarily dairy) trade-show crap just in case an all-cheese diet doesn't appeal.
