Guest guest
Zach has a new aide this year and things are not going well!! Zach is non-verbal but he does sign language just simple ASL. last year his aide was fluent in sign language. this aide does not do signs and is not trained in Autism, Zach is having meltdowns in general ed this year so far. It is in his IEP that the aide will assist him in sign in the general classroom. The aide from last year I think would be willing to come back, ( she was frustrated by the way Zach's teacher taught, new teacher this year)but I am not sure what strategies to use to get her back I don't think I can't ask for a specific aide for my child, but she is the only aide that knows signs. They are going to tell me the new aide is learning, but the way Zach is doing now he is having to leave the classroom and his classmates are seeing his bad behavior I don't know that Zach can wait for the aide to be trained he waited three years for a teacher to get trained and she never understood him. Any suggestions? By the way Dr Monteiro finished her IEE I asked the school to do and as we all thought he is PDD-NOS. Gail
Guest guest
Hi Gail! I'd approach it by saying that a trained aide is part of your son's IEP. An IEP is the plan for receiving a FAPE (Free Appropriate Public Education). If ASL is in the IEP and the aide isn't trained, then simply put they are out of compliance. I'd also point out that your son has no other communication method and therefore isn't receiving an education at this time because of the lack of trained staff. If they burr up, you could always ask them if they would be willing to take their child to a surgeon that is in school, but hasn't completed his studies. Guest guest
I would call an urgent ARD meeting on your son's behalf. His aide needs to be able to communicate with him and he should be learning from her - she should not be learning from him. The school needs to provide someone who has the proper training to do the job and not be training on the job. Emphasize that the transition beginning a new school year is a critical time for your son and he will regress if he doesn't have some continuity. He is missing out on all the important instructions on rules and routines that our special kids benefit from so much in addition to all students. The aide from last year would provide continuity and comfort helping him to open his mind to learning rather than be in a constant state of frustration because he cannot communicate. Guest guest
Gail, I've been thinking about your son's situation. The inability to communicate is most likely what is triggering the meltdowns. You need to point this out to school. It is definitely not a pattern or habit you want to get started as it's much easier to prevent a problem than to change one. Tonya
