I use 4 kinds of bottles. First are Grolsch beer bottles. They are the safest

against explosion, tho I have had no explosions so far. Second are gallon jugs.

The kind with the narrow neck and the loop on the neck for your finger. I found

lots of supplement bottles that have the same sized lid, so I re-use supplement

lids for these when I pick them up at flea markets and they have no lid. I also

recycle glass vinegar bottles.

I also will start using soda bottles soon and then these are the corks I bought

for them. I talked with the seller first and she told me they would fit soda

bottles.

I use grolsch-style bottles (swing top). They are very strong. Some are from

Grolsch beer that I bought specifically for the bottles, others were purchased

at a store that sells wine and beer making supplies. You can get them on eBay

and other websites, but shipping may make them cost more than at local places.

Wine bottles with corks. I reuse the corks and only insert them about 1/2

inch. Should they build pressure they will push corks out. I have probably

thrown away 10,000 bottles over the years. Sounds like a lot but I have

been drinking wine for over 60 years.

You can find grolsh at most liquor stores. It is actually cheaper buying there

than an empty bottle from brew supply places. If you don't like beer it's great

for plants (or if you live near Kansas City you can invite me over and i'll help

you ;)

Hi, Jane.

If I'm doing a second ferment of a " new " flavor experiment, I just repurpose a

GT's bottle (of which I have many). I also use these bottles to brink kombucha

to work, tho' they are not great for heightening carbonation.

However, I prefer to use clear swingtop bottles. IKEA has a great bottle I

love, called " SLOM " (approx $4). As other posters noted, tho', it can cost a

lot to ship glass, even though the bottles are fairly cheap. (Luckily there's a

brick & mortar store fairly near me.)

I can often find a slightly taller swingtop bottle (approx $3) in the Housewares

section of " second " stores, most notably at " Ross Dress for Less " (and

occasionally in Marshall's/TJ Maxx, tho' much rarer there). The bottles seem to

be a seasonal offering, however, and I'm much more likely to find them in these

stores during spring/early summer. (They are also much fewer in number, usually

only 3 or 4, as opposed to IKEA's larger inventory.) I don't like them as much

as the IKEA bottles b/c their height makes them harder to fit in a refrigerator.

If you have any homebrew stores in your town/city, they also often have swingtop

bottles. Some have colored bottles, YMMV.
