Guest guest
I just want to second Bev's suggestions. The 2-gallon Anchor Hocking cookie jar is perfect for kombucha batches, I use a couple of those much more often than I use jars with spigots. And definitely anytime you can reuse glass vessels, it's better for our planet and its inabitants! :-) Vicki in Orlando > > Hi EveryOne, > > While the glass brewing containers from some online sites are very > nice, they are not necessary. Guest guest
Woody, I've made a number of square scobies with my 2-qt glass canisters. No problemo! Since I officially have my SO and DF on board with drinking KT now, yesterday I made my 3rd purchase of a decanter with spigot- this one is square with a 2.375 gal capacity. It's a Del Sol brand; cost: $19.99 > > Thanks for the tip, this does look very nice. Quite reasonably priced too! I was looking for round, but i don't suppose the scoby will mind square The texture effect on the side is cool. It's really not easy finding good CB vessels, we searched for a while and were finding too small, or expensive, high shipping costs, etc. I'm thinking of ditching the stand and just sliding it to the edge of the counter to tap off KT. Now i have a challenge for you if you're up to it: the only thing needed now is a " beyond ideal " heater I may go up to town today and visit bbb and get a CB setup started finally! Thx again. - Woody >
Guest guest
At a local store called Garden Ridge Pottery....it's a humongous place with LOTS of aisle space dedicated solely to beverage decanters! > > > Subject: Re: Glass Brewing Containers > To: original_kombucha > Date: Saturday, January 14, 2012, 4:16 AM >
Guest guest
At a local store called Garden Ridge Pottery....it's a humongous place with LOTS of aisle space dedicated solely to beverage decanters! --------------------------------- You just stole my thunder! :^) I went to the one in west Houston and found this 340 oz (2.65 gallon) behemoth with the brand name of Splash on the box for $29.95! Just so happens, it was the only one I could find on the shelf, but it's mine now. They have all kinds of 1 and 1.5 gallons, even a two jar variety with two 2 gallon jars for a total of 4 gallons! So I guess I'll be venturing into the continuous brew crowd as well before too long. Here's to Brew! Chuck
Guest guest
Well MY thunder came in 2 weeks ago with the SAME decanter! Ha ha....now for the " cons " of it. I had used a combination of black & green tea and LOTS of sugar for that particular decanter. It seemed to take " forever " for a secondary SCOBY to form. Well I guess I was a bit impatient, considering the size of the decanter. The SCOBY was still very thin, but yesterday a taste test (day 12) said, READY!! Frothy, beery-tasting and delicious. But when I went to decant, (I had to move it to the kitchen) I got nothing but a trickle out of it. I went so far as to completely drain it and even re-installed the spigot. Still not satisfied. So I had SO look at it and he said it was due to the very small intake tube. Hmmmmmmm....anyway, rather than take it back for an exchange, I'm keeping it and will be heading to the wine supply shop soon to get a filler wand and hose for the next decanting session. Note: I looked at the top + bottom (twin) decanters, but I know nothing about acrylic and acids so I stuck with glass. Safest bet, IMHO. Good luck with your CB! > > At a local store called Garden Ridge Pottery....it's a humongous place with > LOTS of aisle space dedicated solely to beverage decanters! > --------------------------------- > > You just stole my thunder! :^) > > I went to the one in west Houston and found this 340 oz (2.65 gallon) > behemoth with the brand name of Splash on the box for $29.95! Guest guest
I really appreciate all the great info on brewing containers. I found the following: This one is 2.6 gallons, $27.99 + $7.48 shipping. Less expensive than going to distributors site and purchasing directly from them, though they have lots of choices. http://www.amazon.com/Home-Essentials-SPLASH-HAMMERED-ROUND/dp/B005HDOATC Home Essentials direct site: http://www.classichostess.com/beveragedispensers.aspx And Walmart (I don't typically like to purchase from them, however...) has a 1.5 gallon container for just under $19. I'm going with the 1.5 gallon one since I can return it if I have any issues with it, and I like the idea of perhaps having 2 of them with different teas brewing in each. This will be my first adventure into continuous brewing! Wish me luck.
Guest guest
Hi, You might want to make sure that the spigot is not made of metal before you buy. Kombucha is too acidic to be in contact with metal for very long without a possible reaction which would not be good for the health of your KT or your own. Peace, Love and Harmony, Bev > > I really appreciate all the great info on brewing containers. I found the following: > > This one is 2.6 gallons, $27.99 + $7.48 shipping. Guest guest
Re: We share the same sentiments about Wally World! LOL Long story short, the one they sell (Del Sol) for just under $19 was my first purchase a month ago. I LOVE it...and funny thing, Garden Ridge Pottery had the same one last week for $29! Although their other Del Sol dispensers were larger and just $19.99 I had to laugh last night. SO went shopping and came home with a one gallon cookie jar. Gift for ME, right? NOPE! He wants lessons in making HIS own tea! ROFLMBO > > I really appreciate all the great info on brewing containers. Guest guest
The Del Sol and Splash brand dispensers have chrome-look spigots but they are plastic. No worries here! > > > > I really appreciate all the great info on brewing containers. I found the following: > > > > This one is 2.6 gallons, $27.99 + $7.48 shipping. Guest guest
Thanks for the Bed Bath & Beyond info! I'd checked out their website a few weeks ago and did not see that. Because I now have DF's hubby wanting in on my " little " KT venture and as such, DF is going to HAVE to learn how to brew (very reluctant and lazy, at this point)! Yesterday I decanted my 2nd 11-day " beer " brew from the 1.5 gal dispenser. SO was very pleased with the taste and froth. Although I bought a filler wand and 3' of hose the other day (but hadn't practiced with it), my first attempt at using it to refill the CB dispenser with new tea was an unfortunate disaster. Grrrrrrrrr...So I guess it's more ugly scobies, for now... LOL > > I finally bought a CB vessel for $20 at Bed Bath and Beyond. It looks just about exactly like the one from amazon below except it comes with a metal stand. It had a chromed look spigot, but i replaced it with a much nicer spigot from a link posted on this list previously. It's 2-1/2 gallons, i was really looking for 3 but settled for this. Started brewing over the weekend. I'm excited to now be doing CB, can hardly wait till it's ready to tap. Woo hoo!!! - Woody
Guest guest
I just bought this 4.7 gallon glass dispenser from Bed, Bath & Beyond for $49.99, free shipping. I live an hour away from the store, so I just called, they ordered it for me online, and waived the shipping, which was only going to be $7.99 anyway. They told me if you come into their store and they don't have it in stock, they'll order it with free shipping, however all I did was call. I haven't gotten it yet, but looking forward to having lot's of kombucha brewing. http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?SKU=18415305
Guest guest
Hi Woody, The vessel should be arriving tomorrow. I'll measure it then and let you know. > > > Subject: Re: Glass Brewing Containers > To: original_kombucha > Date: Thursday, January 26, 2012, 3:33 PM > > > I just bought this 4.7 gallon glass dispenser from Bed, Bath & Beyond for $49.99, free shipping. Guest guest
The container came today. It's beautiful! Here are the dimension without the stand: 15 " high, 10 " wide both ways. The stand adds another 4 1/2 " , but isn't necessary. It's really big! A little intimidating because I haven't done a continuous brew yet. Hope that helps. > > > > From: bji4u <4bidarius@> > > Subject: Re: Glass Brewing Containers > > To: original_kombucha > > Date: Thursday, January 26, 2012, 3:33 PM > > > > > > I just bought this 4.7 gallon glass dispenser from Bed, Bath & Beyond for $49.99, free shipping.
