Guest guest
I am in the middle of a 3-week trip, and I did exactly what you are suggesting with my kombucha. I split my continuous brew into two 1-gallon glass jars with a couple of SCOBYs in each. I split it into two jars so that the liquid wouldn't slosh out. One jar has a plastic spiggot at the bottom, and I use this one for serving. The other is reserve. I covered each jar with cloth secured by rubber band, and toppied that with the jar lid, but only loosely so that some air could still get in. Then I put each jar in a 2-gallon plastic zip-lock type bag that I left open at the top. This was just so that if the spiggot leaked, or a little liquid did slosh out somehow, it wouldn't leak out into the car. I wasn't sure how warm it would get in my car trunk, so I put both jars in their bags into a plastic tote and put in my back seat. Since it's summer, I could leave them in the car overnight. When I got to my destination. I brought them inside and they have been great. I have poured most of the reserve into the serving jar, and started a new batch in the reserve jar. I even have SCOBYs to give away to friends here. So travel on-- but be sure to protect your car. It turned out there was liquid in the bottom of the plastic bag of the jar withthe spiggot, so I was glad I took that extra precaution.
