Have you tried flash cards with the 1000 most-used words to see if teaching

by sight reading would work? Years ago, when we were teaching reading, the

neurodevelopmentalist we were working with told me that it's very difficult to

teach kids with auditory processing problems to read phonetically. We were

given the list of 1000 most-used words and were told to put them on flash cards.

We were to do ten at a time, hold them up for the child to see for about 1

second each while saying the word. We were to go through them three times,

mixing up the cards each time. Gradually, we'd pause before saying the word in

hopes the child would fill in the word. As the words were mastered, we were to

replace them with new cards.

My son was one of the hyperlexic types so we gave up on this after a few

weeks and just went through the list looking for words he didn't know. However,

I

know several people who felt this method worked really well with their kids.

Once the child is reading by sight, then you teach them to sound out bigger

words.

There are great games you can play with the words as well. The one problem I

have run into with sightword training so to speak is for those kiddos who have

memory issues. When this happens I have found that they make up words for the

sightword or simply don't " remember " the word. I teach 5-10 at a time and color

code them, and play a memory game. This has been a great strategy!

You can start with the dolch word list. Just do a search for Dolch Word list. It

should bring up the words by grade level. I started with just a few at a time,

and put them on flash cards punched a hole in the corner and kept it together

with a ring( like from a loose leaf notebook. We had one set in the car and one

for home. I use different colored markers for different grades. I also used

different colored cards so I could see what level my kids were on without them

even knowing I was tracking their success.
