Guest guest
If your benefits cover it, you might want to look into massage therapy. I use a Registered Massage Therapist, but a chiropractor might do it as well. You'll have to see what options are in your area. It does decrease chronic pain and lets you avoid medications and it's worked for me and several others. I tried acupuncture and it works as well, but because of the distance it's not an option for me.Always check out the practitioners though, because most alternative medicine isn't regulated, even when they make it look official. Guest guest
UGH! Hate to hear of knee injuries. I've recovered from 2 knee surgeries and they've told me in the past that I had no cartilage left in mine too. Guess what, to their surprise, you can regenerate cartilage. They were shocked to look at 2 MRI's a year apart to see cartilage regrowth in my knee. The secret for me was weights. Leg extensions, leg curls, 30%'s of each of those, etc. I'd ask for physical therapy from your doctor if I were you. They can give you all the exercises and then when you are released from PT, then you can start adding more and more weight to those exercises to really strengthen the muscles surrounding the knee joints. Sorry I have been off and depressed. .. a few weeks ago I started running and my knee just swelled like crazy so I finally made appt with ortho doc....... The news was not good.. basically I have no knees... well nothing between my bones. He was somewhat shocked I could even walk. He said that most of the time with x rays like I have he would order knee replacement surgery tomorrow! BUT... I am young and it would mean a second one when I get older (the replacements don't last forever. I think~10 years). Plus I am mobile and active. I have has osteoarthritis all thru my life and maybe playing competitive VB was not the best idea for me but (like jen) I loved it. I had to give it up as my knees couldn't handle the pounding. For last few days I have been depressed but did lots of research and I have plan. 1) drop 40lbs... more than I planned (I was only aiming for 20) but the more the better. Goal is 20 by end of this year and hopefully 40 in a year. 2)get back to major strength training. I need strong muscles surrounding my knees. 3) try some alternative stuff like acupuncture. I take glucosamine supplements but the clinical trials on it are not so hot. 4) WW religiously.... So.. I will be back to working out every day. Right now Jen is really my inspiration... she doesn't let injury or pain stop her on her journey. The pain in my knee isn't that bad but I don't want it to get worse. I plan on walking dogs more, adding pilates (back to Mari and my crazy accelerator thing)... anyway.. thanks for letting me vent. I just hope I can keep competing in dog agility. The running is short sprints so I think with some ibuprofen I will be fine. He drained a syringe full of stuff from my knee and gave me a cortisol shot and I feel great...I need to think of good exercise plan. any ideas welcome.. I think I will start low impact easy -- leslie some powerfit and work up the intensity judy with no knees in DC -- Tonyawww.trainingwithtonya.comwww.smellabella.comwww.facebook.com/trainingwithtonya www.twitter.com/trainingwtonya

Guest guest
Oh Judy, my heart sank when I read this. Here I am complaining about a fussy adductor... your situation indeed sounds serious HUGS. I don't know what to tell you, other thanyour plan to deal with this sounds very wise to me. Is there any kind of physical therapy you can do with knee strengthening exercises specific to your condition?Jen is my inspiration too how do you feel about swimming? Please keep us posted on what you are up to! White light,

Guest guest
Take care, Judy! I hope that you find something that works for you! Kettlebells really helped me when I had to do no impact workouts. I had such a problem with my ankles for 3 years. I know it is a different problem, though. Oh Judy!!! I'm so sorry to hear this!! I don't blame you for being depressed, what frustratingly awful news! As others have said, your plan sounds solid and I saw you were checking into PT too, I'm sure that will help. I'm surprised to hear glucomsamine isn't turning out to be so good, enough people talk about it (and chondroitin, how does that check out?) for osteo that you'd think it was a wonder drug. Amazing what advertising hype can do! Can you take the cortisol shots with any regularity (without other major risks for using it long term)? Ugh. I have a member who has lost 56 pounds and needs knee replacement surgery too. She was disappointed to hear that losing that much weight hadn't been enough to avoid surgery but she's still losing (I think she has another 40 or 50 to go) and is looking forward to no longer being in pain after the surgery. You too, will get through all this... though I know it is far from easy. I hope you can still compete with your dogs, I'm betting you'll find a way no matter what! For low impact: Kathy is fun. Her walking workout has some " prancing " but she also modifies by walking. Madeline Walking for Weight Loss is great, just avoid the lower body 2 minute intervals probably. Charlene Prickett Start Your Engines is all low impact but high intensity. Can you do step workouts? There are some that are low impact. Ugh. My prayers are with you, I know this is so hard but you are tough and I know you will get through it even stronger! Hugs, ughhh bad knee news Sorry I have been off and depressed. .. a few weeks ago I started running and my knee just swelled like crazy so I finally made appt with ortho doc.......The news was not good.. basically I have no knees... well nothing between my bones.
