Guest guest
For all you out there hand milking and then concuming your milk raw. What precautions sd o you take to ensure ther is no contamination? Right now we brush our cow, then scrub her teats and udders with a wash, then dip her teats in a teat dip- dry her off with a clean towel, discard the first few squirts of milk and then mlk her. We strain the milk twice and then put it into the fridge. I have a cmt that I use weekly. Is there anything else I should be doing?? I have kids and I want to be as careful as possible because I dont want anyone getting sick.. Also- thanks for all the input re my cow/calf. Despite the mothers low suspension the claf is managing to suckle. She wont be able to keep it up for long though because she practically has to lay down to get any. How do I kno if she is getting enough? Since I saw her nurse I havent tried the bottle(yesterday). I am worried that she will dehydrate if she doesnt get enough from mom but so far every time I have tried the bottle she has refused. Guest guest
Sounds like all we do for milk. Make double sure your storage jars are clean too. I like to rinse with vinegar. Guest guest
Something else you might want to do is cool your milk quickly instead of putting it the fridge. After it is in your glass bottles immerse it in ice water. It will last much longer and taste better. Any time milk sets for a while warm all bacteria grow very fast, both the good and the bad. Guest guest
I use a plastic container for my milk, as I buy it in bulk (20L, or about 5 gallons) per fortnight. This I wash in hot soapy water, then vinegar, to neutralise the pH, then lots of clear water to remove the vinegar, then I add hydrogen peroxide to water and wash with that, then more water. My hubby used to work in a milk factory, and he advised the peroxide. Guest guest
Just felt the need to clarify the peroxide mentioned needs to be "food grade". I have seen this simple mistake made before and the results weren't pretty. So if anyone is going to use it make sure you get the right one and handle it with EXTREME caution.I use a plastic container for my milk, as I buy it in bulk (20L, or about 5 gallons) per fortnight. Guest guest
Where are the Canadians getting the food grade peroxide? I cannot find it in MB unless I want to buy a 50 gallon drum and I don't.
