Guest guest
What you can do is after a few good brews doing it old way, keep saving your scobys and then begin a new brew using one of the saved scobys with the chai tea and then measure the results. Guest guest
I keep spare SCOBYs for things like that. Usually only one ferment cycle, then compost those scobys. I have 2 SCOBY hotels so always lots of spares to play with. And my 2.5 gal crock produces a HUGE scoby - easy to break that into pieces for several side projects. Guest guest
Yes, those 2.5 gal crocks sure do make the big scobys. I have seven brews going now and am stocked up with them in my scoby hotel and I have put three now into my flower bed when I made the last brews. I also gave one away to someone here. I think next I will offer some to a friend who has a dog when I pour off the current brews. They have a jack russel terrier. Is there anything I should tell them as for what size piece they should give her and how often? Becuz I drink kt all day long and it does not bother me a bit, but my dad could only drink an ounce a day when he started. So I don't know how to dose a dog. She is old and is having health problems these last few years. And, if I can even get them convinced to make kombucha themselves so they will always have scobys for the dog, can I tell them they should try to get the dog to drink some brew? Guest guest
I have not heard from anyone about this inquiry so I thot maybe it did not go out. Yahoo does not always send me every post so I have learned to repeat a post if I don't see it myself or hear from anyone in follow-up to a post I make. > > Yes, those 2.5 gal crocks sure do make the big scobys. So that is what I have done so far. My scoby is indeed HUGE and I have not touched it in the past 2-3 mos that I have been brewing. Thanks! Guest guest
I was there with my dad when I started him. I only see him a couple times a year. So on that day, the first dose, he was happy with. The second was iffy when he went to the bathroom. After the third, he said with great but gentle concern as only my Dad can do, he said it gave him the s**ts. (Roughly translated, that means the big D.) So then I told him to just stay with an ounce a day for a few days. I can drink KT without any limit and have only felt a little bit of a brief buz a time or two myself. Once was a warm feeling in my left collar bone and the front of my left upper arm. The other time it was a warmth in the back of my neck that lasted just a few mins. The neck area received trauma when I had a brain tumor removed from that site 30 years ago. The collar bone/arm thing could be the result of a trauma or just a hereditary thing. I had " torn my shoulder " in 2008 and never could get it " fixed " by modern medicine because I did not have health insurance. The tear was in my shoulder, but the pain built over a year to go down my arm to my wrist and down my back. It was pretty excruciating. Quite surprisingly, tho, I healed that up with a changed diet and the right amount of good water during the year 2009 and so the pain was long gone when I started drinking KT in the spring 2011. My dad is lately having alot of soreness pain in that identical area of his arm. Not his shoulder, tho. So who knows. I don't know if my Dad has ever drank any KT without me pouring some and giving it to him. I don't ask my dad anything about his KT anymore. I just know that he has to want it. I encouraged him as much as I could. He has to choose to continue with it. I started him in the spring and when I went back in Aug, he had not touched any of it. As for your chickens, they probably eat until they are satisfied so they didn't gobble it all up at once, I'd say. Dogs, on the other hand, will chow down all you give them. So the eating styles are different and since the scoby is medicinal, I suppose there is some learning you have to do before you just give it to any animal. ----- Original Message ----- My first scoby became infested with fruit fly larvae the very first week (and I had it covered!). Guest guest
The groups don't have many talks about giving KT to animals, tho there are a couple and it has been done. One person just drizzles a T on their dog's food. Joyce comments that she is going to research it more. I would be interested in knowing how she researches it even if just to tell my friends how they can research it, too, so they feel more comfortable. Because, ya know, KT is " just another weird thing Lyn is doing these days " to anyone I have shared this with so far. You know what I mean. Lyn ----- Original Message ----- People have posted previously about dehydrating extra SCOBYs and feeding those to dogs. Actual KT as I recall it was a small amount. Teaspoon or so. Guest guest
LOL ... yeah I know ... just gifted some SCOBYs today and it is funny to watch the faces of people new to it. They are ugly until you grow to love them and then they become lovely. But it does look like a crazy mad scientist experiment to most. We are so far separated from how our food is made these days people are often weirded out by it. Guest guest
A SCOBY hotel is a jar with SCOBYs in it that you use for back-up if you want to experiement or if something unfortunate should happen to your primary brew/ferment. Usually I will add, or sometimes completely switch out the tea for some " newer " KT, but still old enough to be acidic enough to protect the scobys. The hotel often forms its own extra scoby on top, so over time you could end up with a jar with many many layers of scobys in there. Some people use scobys as a facial treatment, some on wounds, etc etc. There are many potential uses for extra scobys. Obviously once used in such a way you should compost it or throw it out after that. I saw a good picture of a hotel somewhere. Trying to remember. If I can find it I will try to post it. Might be helpful reference for folks. I am visual and it helped me. Jaxi I keep wondering what a SCOBY hotel is?
