Hey all!

I have had a problem with betaine hydrochloride. One night about

an hour before going to bed, I ate some meat from broth I was

making. I took a betaine hydrochloride tab with it. About 2 in the

morning, I woke up with the worst heart burn. I drank lots of water

and paced for a while and then threw up some very acid...uh...throw

up! I have had stomach pain and heart burn since then. Bummer. Judy

" You guys need not worry about taking too much betaine

hydrochloride. I have been using and or recommending betaine for

many years. If you do take too much I assure you that you'll know

it. And the harm you'll do will simply be about 10 minutes of

discomfort as all you'll need to do to resolve it will be just eat

some more. Betaine

is a great addition to most modern diets considering the nearly

epidemic frequency of low hcl. "

Judy I'd suggest that its unlikely that this is associated with

betaine at all. Betaine is acidic but not even close to stomach

acid. I've been working with clients for years as have many

colleagues using betaine with zero negative effect. There would be

no explanation for betaine causing ongoing difficulty as you

describe. There are some folks who adding betaine doesn't work or

isn't a good fit for and they simply don't take it upon discovering

this. I've never seen any lingering betaine effect for more than a

couple hours in the worst of cases. I'm not suggesting at all that

what you describe didn't happen I'm simply saying that your

associating the ongoing problems with the betaine is an unlikely

association.

I've had that problem a little when I took too much.

Lately my stomach acid seems to be " coming back "

and I just don't need the Betain HCL as much. Also

laying down after eating a bigger (or meatier) meal

can be an issue, whether or not you take BHCL. Your

stomach valve opens randomly, and if you are in

the wrong position it can reflux up. I had the worst

problem when I was cutting bushes (leaning over)

after lunch.

==>Instead, try taking 2 in the middle of your meal, 2 after, and 2

forty minutes later. I read recently that taking HCl 40 minutes after

a meal can help a lot.

Is your digestion still messed up? What are your symptoms?

Hi Kara,

It is my understanding that the stomach can handle huge amounts of

acid if its healthy enough, as it will just make more sodium

bicarbonate to balance out the extra acids. If you don't have any

syptoms of poor digestion besides the constipation, I think doing the

massages is a better option than taking more HCl. If its painful, I

think that shows that that area needs work, so that may be part of the

issue for you.

Also, if I said this already, forgive me, but I just wanted to point

out that dehydration issues can cause constipation as well. Since the

more dehydrated you are the less your bowels will move. And as

adrenal fatigue is a major contirbutor to dehydration issues, have you

looked into whether you have adrenal fatigue?

When a person has adrenal fatigue, they can't retain sodium, and

therefore will lose water rapidly. People with adrenal fatiuge are

often dehydrated no matter how much they drink. It only resolves

itself when they drink water WITH sodium, which enables the body to

retain that water.

For me the best thing for it (besides doing the 9 day plan, magnesium

and vitamin C) was the electrolyte drink and putting loads of salt in

all food. I would recommend that you check into adrenal fatigue if

you haven't already. Check out Bee's file on it at

I was hoping it would help the constipation though. No luck yet. I

have started doing the massage and boy does to hurt and it feels like

a golf ball. I am not sure what else I should be looking for...

==>Hi Kara. You probably went on the diet too fast. You would do

okay taking only 2 HCl in the middle of your meal, and 2 forty

minutes after.

I recommend you do the 9-day program:

==>Hi Jecca. Would you please send me references for this

information?

==>All candida sufferers have adrenal fatigue and most have

malfunctioning thyroid too. Dehydration isn't only the result of

adrenal fatigue; there are other factors involved, including candida

toxins making all of the cell membranes rigid, and cell membranes not

be constructed properly out of saturated fat. It takes time for the

cell membranes to get reconstructed, and candida toxins may interfere

with that process too.

==>While some direct treatments of adrenals may help, the focus

should be on curing candida, i.e. following the diet (getting good

fats to where they should be) and taking all of the supplements.

==>That is not true. It won't only resolve with water and sodium

Jecca. There are many other factors, and " good " fats is one of

them. Also minerals and chloride are very important. But again the

entire program works together, so doing any one thing without the

others doesn't work. The focus must be on " giving the body what it

needs to do its job " and the adrenals will eventually normalize.

I started drinking the salt water last nite (yuck) and in the middle of

the nite it kicked in. (It was either the salt water or the 2 bags of

pork rinds I ate) But I think it was the salt water. I fit the

description and when ever I drank water before it would run right

through me. This time it did not AND I slept better to! I continue to

do the massage too.

So if this has fixed it do I still need to do the 9 day program?

THANKS

Kara

PS I knew What Jecca was saying :) so no worries.

==>Well done Kara! No, if you are better you do not have to do the 9-

day program.

That's good Kara. Thanks for letting me know.
