I prefer glass myself. A few years ago, when I was running the "Mooshine Express" out of the back of my old Dodge truck, I used the heavy cranbery juice type jugs.

I washed them with soap and water, triple rinsed them in very hot water and let them air dry upside down on a rack. Then I would put about a teaspoon of bleach in a jug, with a quart of water. I would put the lid on, shake it up and pour to the next jug, treating 8-10 as needed with the same water/bleach mix. Then after the jugs had drained and dried, I added the milk, strained through a cheese cloth, warm from the cow and put it in a 34 degree F refrigerator. Worked very well.Bill

Hi,

Can I store raw milk in plastic milk jugs in the refrigerator after sanitizing them? I store them in glass jars, but I want to give a gallon to a friend of mine, and don't want to lose my glass jars.

Thanks,

Darlene

I have a friend that stores her milk in 2 liter pop bottles she has cleaned

herself with no issues. She also freezes in them and it works well.

The first goat milk farm I used distributed milk in the plastic distilled water

jugs (same as milk jugs) and it worked fine (it was a very low budget

operation). I prefer milk in glass so there's no plastic in it but no reason why

you couldn't give your friend milk in plastic, as long as the bottle is clean.

My naturopath has warned me against re-using plastic bottles. The washing,

squeezing and all the usage allows the BPA to leak into the liquid. I'd hate to

think of the raw milk being a conductor for BPA. I immediately take my milk out

of the jugs and put them into BPA-free plastic bottles that I got at Walmart for

$5. They are light enough for my kids to handle and work great for juice, too.

I would definitely use glass if it weren't so heavy for my kids. Crate & Barrel

have some darling containers for my cream but nothing for my milk.

I never re-use water bottles or any other type of plastics that touch our foods

or liquids. I'm probably being overly cautious but I'm going through

perimenopause at 43 and not wanting to exacerbate the issue.

Warm regards,

Kim
