Has anyone tested their unfiltered tap water pH straight. I live in

NSW, Australia and my tap water has a pH of 7.5, but my filtered

water had a pH of 6. I thought that was odd, but I also thought tap

water was supposed to be neutral to acidic? ~natalie

==> Hi Nat, I just checked and both my tap water and my carbon filtered

water were 5.8 Don't know what this means though. Wonder what the NSW govt

puts in the water that's different to what the QLD govt puts in the water?

Rain water is fairly acidic too. I would guess that acidic water would

be the softer water (i.e. it hasn't come into contact with a lot

of magnesium and calcium salts?).

tap water should be more acidic so, I was surprised at the 7.5 and

now even more surprised at your water at 5.8. I did a bit of

research on the net- which was hard to find what tap pH should be-

and it should be more alkaline because acidic water can be a

breeding ground for bugs. But then that contradicts what the water

ionisers say because they recommend acidic water for getting rid of

bugs.

I have, but it was a U.S. Government contract, not offshore. It was

only oriented towards doing collections for a lab (who would properly

analyze it) in addition to spot checks for several kinds of flora

(targeted by a very simple kit: fill it, store it, wait two days,

check the color. I think it was yellow=bad.) The " lab collection "

stuff was more about sterile technique then anything, and it was about

four hours of my life I'll never get back.

That said, if there is any industry-standard training for this, I

would think it would be something included in the marine crew's

training--at the very least for your Master's ticket. On the other

hand, " qualified " could also be grouped as " capable of reading the

instruction card with our commercial test " and I wouldn't think anyone

would have a problem with it.

And all I thought you ever did was pass water. Good day Chas.

A blast from my past from when I was in SM2 is heading my way on a support

vessel. Not sure if you knew Ian Fraser or not, he left T boats in the mid

90's.

Kindest regards,

Nigel
