I've been trying to get one of my docs to test my parathyroid ever since my PA

diagnosis. A nurse at UCLA told me she has seen a lot of patients - women, she

pointed out - with both PA and parathyroid issues.

My docs insist that if your parathyroid is problematic, your calcium levels will

be high, not low. And since mine are always midrange normal, they won't test

further.

Can't recall if you have PA or not. This can miminc PTH problems as discussed here and in our files.Need thumbnail so I can remember. CE Grim MDI have had low vitamin D for a while. My thryoid was removed in 2009 and I was told for the doctors to check my calcium each time blood was drawn. Each time the levels came out normal.Within the last year as my bp started going up and the sprio started to work, I have other issues pop up. With things like my TSh going up to 45.9 on meds, then going to the other extreme with changes in meds, in May I actually lost 15 pounds. then it started creeping up and I had symptoms which were reminscent of morning sickess (nausea, vomitting, light headedness) i went to my endro who sent me off for a CT scan of my abdomen. results showed a twist gallbladder with gallstones inside of it. Then had gallbladder function test which came back normal. I was sent to my GYN in case there was a tumor in my ovary. After she did a group of tests, I was sent back to my endro. My parathryoid levels came in at 122 on a scale of 20=86. As she looked it up, all my symptoms were there and we learned that this gland also causes calcium and Vitamin D to be depleted. issues like what? You don't mention any issues except the labs - do you mean symptoms of some kind other than the morning sickness issues.

And....CT of belly's are often a pain in the rear because patients so frequently - maybe mearly all of us - have stones on our gallbladders (but cause no issue) and often in our bladder. But trying to explain to a patient it (the stones) is likely nothing to fret over just means you've made them fret over it and then they natural have symptoms that HAVE to be that.

Not saying this applies to you I am just illustrating how these "big" (meaning big chunks of the body like the stomach) cat scans can cause more worry than not sometimes. I recall in the 80's when that trend was around to have many radiologists open a corner "body scan" clinic - at least in So Cal. Problem was they took the picture then read and gave the report to the patient. Of course we all have these little nuggets of something inside of us - fat cysts, lipomas, stones, etc that do nothing, but now they HAD to be followed up on and many a doc refused to take that patient on when they didn't order the CT for liability reasons. So that trend faded very fast and for good reason.

I have had low vitamin D for a while. My thryoid was removed in 2009 and I was told for the doctors to check my calcium each time blood was drawn. Each time the levels came out normal.

Within the last year as my bp started going up and the sprio started to work, I have other issues pop up. The description also says it can help cause high blood pressure.

So now I am off for another round of labs for calcium, vitamin D, tsh, thyroxine and the para glands.

Has anyone had any issues like this with the parathryoid.

I am dealing with similar issues. I had extremely low Vit D, low normal calcium, but high Parathyroid. I take 100,000 iu of vit D a week to stay in normal range for vit D. Interestingly, i was told I had a renal calcium leak, which caused secondary hyperparathyroidism. So, i was being treated with HCTZ to " plug " the leak. Dr. Grim suggested cutting the HCTZ and using a low sodium diet to correct the leak. I had blood work after one month of doing so, which proved it worked. It is the Sodium that was causing the calcium leak, which caused secondary hyperparathyroidism (actually, the parathyroid was doing what it was suppose to do). Blood calcium would be high IF the parathyroid was not functioning correctly as in the case of Primary Hyperparathyroidism. Do they test you urine calcium? I was losing alot of calcium in the urine, hence the renal calcium leak diag. Somehow all of these things are related to PA. Simply put, DASH (or low sodium diet) fixes the renal calcium leak and the parathyroid problem. It hasnt fixed the vit D problem yet, but perhpas in time it will. I would suggest they do a 24hr urine collection and look at the calcium level. I suspect you are leaking calcium and have secondary hyperparathyroidism along with PA. Easy fix. Do DASH and treat the PA with Spiro and Potassium suppliments as needed.

Ca is normally reabsorbed in the proximal tubule. However in high sodium intakes or in primary aldo the volume expansion leads to rapid progress of glomerular filtrate (pee) (for reasons that are not clear but likely related to low renin and AII. Thus the pee passe thru too fast for Ca and other things that are absorbed proximally to be reabsorbed and they stay in the pee and exit the body.Mg is not reabsorb in prox but in thick ascending limb. Which is where some diuretics work and may increase Mg excretion. Most low Mg is due to non renal losses or low intake.CE Grim MDI am dealing with similar issues. I do have PA .. I am the 56 yo female who has been treated for PA since last July.  I was on the HCTZ which caused issues my nephrologist believed me to me in  renal failure, yet when removed from it and put on spiro my kidneys are healing, my potassium remains in the normal range instead of me having to supplement it.

My symptoms other than the morning sickness issues are also constipation, pain at times in the lower right area of my back (doctor is now looking at a kidney stone), constipation, weight gain. Estrogen levels went from 19 in Nov 10 to 67 in May 11, to 8 in June 11.

This new development has taken my GYN and Endro by surprise.  Pam
