<I'm

very hypoglycemic, so I need to eat a lot of fat to control my blood sugar>

, I am curious...about how much fat do you eat in a day? I am having so

many problems with my hypoglycemia right now I am going crazy. I have been

trying to include fat everywhere....whole milk, whole milk products, butter

all over the place, non lean meats, ect. I am guessing you probably don't

measure your amounts, but would you mind describing what you would include

in an average meal or two? Do you include many carbohydrates/grains in your

diet? I removed mine again for 2 weeks...I crashed horribly, added some

back in, but my cravings are terrible, and I am constantly fighting the

balance between enough carbs to keep from crashing again, but few enough

that my hypoglycemia symptoms don't return. My mood swings have been

terrible, so I know I am losing the battle right now.

Thanks!

A lot. Gigantic humungaloid enormendous amounts.

For blood sugar purposes, whole milk and whole milk products (such as

yoghurt and whole-milk kefir, as opposed to half-and-half yoghurt and

kefir) don't really count as low-carb high-fat foods, at least not for many

people. There's too much sugar, and even when milk is fermented, the

resulting lactic acid still winds up being metabolized more or less like sugar.

>but would you mind describing what you would include

>in an average meal or two?

Sure. For breakfast today, I had six scrambled eggs cooked in a couple

giant heaping spoonfuls of butter, and two huge, fat homemade

sausages. Later I'm going to have some seafood salad made with a very

large amount of mayo and a bit of celery. Yesterday I had a steak with

sausage and creamed spinach (heavy on the cream!) on the side.

> Do you include many carbohydrates/grains in your

Zero grains, some carbs. I eat a moderate amount of berries, though I

ferment some of them, which at least reduces the rate at which the sugar

hits and provides some beneficial acids and bacteria. I also eat a lot of

cream and fermented cream, which has more lactose (and lactose metabolites)

than you might think. And I eat various low-carb vegetables like spinach

and moderate amounts of other things like onion. I also eat plenty of

garlic, loads of ginger, and I don't stint on herbs and spices. I use

tomato paste, I occasionally eat some saccharine-sweetened homemade ketchup

made from tomato juice, and I eat some tomatoes every now and then. I

don't really know what it all adds up to, though.

Everyone's spot on the axis is somewhat unique, so I can't say what

macronutrient ratio is right for you, but from the sounds of it you might

not be eating enough fat (I need amazing quantities of fat to keep my blood

sugar stable, like I said) and it's not impossible that you have impaired

digestion, which could be aided and eventually rectified by adding some

fermented foods, temporarily supplementing with digestive enzymes,

etc. It's at least something to look into.

I'm new here, looking more so to learn at this point but my nutrition changes

started off with serious hypoglycemia problems. The door I entered that led me

down a path to here was Dr. Atkins. I've order NT online but not

received it yet in the mail. So my readings so far have been just on the Weston

Price site. I have not yet read where they really recommend guidelines for

dealing with hypoglycemia. Atkins is very similar in thought in many aspects

(not all but enough). His writing is actually more focused at diabetic/insulin

problems which include hypoglycemia. He goes more indepth about the cravings

you are talking about - what causes them, etc. You have to get your insulin

problems fixed to get rid of them - that takes a littler effort and time. He

also talks about ketolysis which is a metabolism wherein your body burns fat

instead of glucose for fuel. You have to learn to count the number of carbs you

eat - you can eat all you need of fat and protein. On his plan, you cut all

milk because of the lactose carbs and initially, you cut all bread. Then there

is a list of vegatables not to eat - mainly the starcher ones with higher

glycemic ratings (they digest too quickly). As you progress, you learn what

your carb level is - some people are much more physically active and burn more.

Thus they can handle eating more obviously. And of course it makes a difference

if you want to lose weight or maintain weight.

Ketolysis is a great way to stablize insulin problems. It takes several days

for your body to make the switch, you can feel like heck when that is happening.

For me, once my body restablized, it was dramatic relief. I've been on a low

carb/high fat diet now 18 months. I don't run the ketogenic metabolism any

longer. As long as I stay reasonably within my carb limit and do not eat

refined sugars at all, I have no problems. I can't see any conflict in holding

to NT principles and Atkins at the same time - they both fit.

That was a very interesting account of what you eat. Are you trying to be in

ketosis? Also, what brand of mayo do you use or do you make your own? If you

make your own, how about a recipe? I'm still looking for a decent mayo.

Thanks,

Jafa-

I'm not trying to be in ketosis -- I eat too much fruit and dairy and

vegetables for that. And I make my own mayo, more or less per the NT

recipe, but I use palm oil or macadamia oil, depending on whether the mayo

has to be refrigerated. (Palm is about half saturated, so palm mayo

hardens too much.)

<Another question: how much protein are you eating, and from what kind of

I can't say in grams how much protein I consume in a day, but I do try and eat

as much as I can get my hands on. I used to try and eat eggs more often...but

they have never really sat well on my stomach. But I do eat meat with every

meal, and I know the dairy products I consume have quite a bit of protein. I

have contemplated trying raw eggs to see if they go over better...but just

haven't been able to bring myself to that yet.

, raw egg yolks go down really easily in a smoothie. Especially if you add

nutmeg and cinnamon. Seems to mask any remaining flavour of the egg yolks. Try

it. I was so sqeemish about all this stuff but now I'm chowing on the meat and

even swallowing raw liver with almost nary a grimace. Getting there!

Hi ,

I find the same thing myself w/eggs but notice that they digest much

better if I eat some kind of cooked greens with them. Works either

cooked in with them like spinach or else steamed & sauteed on the

side like kale, etc.

I have a delicious way eating raw eggs... I make a

smoothie from 1 small banana, 1/3 tin of coconut milk

and cinnamon. I pour it into a glass, then stir in 2

egg yolks. I chuck away the whites - they are a bit

too snotty to eat raw. You don't know that they're

there within the thick tasty smoothie! It's

delicious.

I also make a berrie smoothie the same way, but it's

not as filling as the banana, no matter how many

berries I put it.
