----- the French UHT milk came in a variety of bottles [plastic] and rectangular

cartons.. they do last a very long time without refrigeration till you open

them... it's not for lack of refrigeration I think... more to do with the fact

that this part of France is sparsely populated... village we stayed in has only

80 inhabitants, not even one shop... [there are smaller more remote villages

yet]... it's all mountains and valleys... nearest shop to us was 13km away...

nearest supermarket in a town 30km away... the village is visited by various

suppliers in vans [once a week by the butcher, same with the fishmonger and a

local farmer with seasonal and very fresh fruits 'n' veg. and 3 times a week by

the baker/patissier]. for the rest you have to drive down the mountain in what,

at places, is a real 'white-knuckle-ride'.. we missed the annual wild boar hunt

because of the heat wave and the 'fete de cochon' in autumn.... still... what a

place... can't wait to go back...

Sounds wonderful, Dedy! Especially the deliveries. Cochon was one of the

first French words I learned. Maybe because we raised pigs when l was

learning to talk.
