Hi Malayna,

Welcome to the CAST Support Group!

Please make sure that your son is getting

an EDF (elongation, derotation, flexion) cast w/ Mehtas modifications. Most

docs doing this type of cast (EDF) still refer to all casts as Risser casts, because

that’s the name of the ins code they use for reimbursement. Are the

docs applying a cast in order to achieve correction, or just to maintain?

Have you been able to read Dr. Mehtas article (Growth as a corrective force in

the early treatment of progressive infantile scoliosis) or view “A New

Direction” DVD? These two items will help you better understand the

principles behind this gentle, effective treatment. May I also recommend

that you read www.infantilescoliosis.org

in its entirety, when you get a chance.

About the cooling vests….Normally,

the vests are for infants/toddlers…..What size does your son wear?

Sincerely,

HRH

Hi Malayna,

Your son will be in great hands at the Shriners Hospital in SLC. Their

casting program is top-notch! We will be thinking of you both next

Tuesday, so please update us, when you can. I’ll be trying to get a

larger size vest made, in the meantime…..

My best!

WELL THERE IS A CHANGE IN PLANS, THERE IS ANOTHER DOCTOR THAT IS CONCERNED ABOUT THE CAST WITH HOW HOT IT GETS HERE, IT GETS TO ABOUT 115 DEGREES HERE. THEY ARE THINKING TO MAYBE JUST PUT HIM IN THE BRACE AND SEE HOW THAT WORKS. THEY SAID I MAY NOT EVEN HAVE TO PUT HIM IN A CAST, JUST DEPENDS ON HOW WELL THE BRACE WORKS, I AM SO CONFUSED ON WHAT TO DO FOR MY SON, I AM TRYING TO MAKE THE ROAD A LIL SHORTER THAT HE WILL HAVE TO TRAVEL. THEY ARE GOING TO RESCHEDULE OUR APPT FOR THE FIRST WEEK OF JUNE. WHAT WOULD YOU DO PUT HIM IN A CAST OR A BRACE. I AM THINKING OF MAYBE JUST PUTTING HIM IN THE BRACE BUT THEN IF THAT DOESN'T WORK THEN I WILL HAVE TO MAKE THE DECISION OF PUTTING RODS DOWN HIS BACK OR PUTTING HIM IN THE CAST..... SO I GUESS IF YOU WANT TO HOLD OFF ON THE VEST. THANK YOU VERY MUCH

Malayna, I would really suggest that you get an opinion from the docs at SLC and see what they say.... I know it gets hot, but there is air-conditioning and indoor play-gyms and malls... And the vest could be a big help, as well.... Just a suggestion! Hang in there! StephMalayna Hinojosa wrote: WELL THERE IS A CHANGE IN PLANS, THERE IS ANOTHER DOCTOR THAT IS CONCERNED ABOUT THE CAST

Hi Malayna,

I agree completly with Steph, I would definitally go to SLC and get

their opinion. We have been going to SLC for a year and a half and

love it. Our son is currently in his 6th cast and going into a brace

next week. Summers are a little worrysome, but they are bearable.

The cast will not be as bad as you think. A lot of the summer we let

Noah run around without a shirt, just to keep him cooler. He managed

just fine.

We will be in SLC Monday afternoon and staying through Friday, please

let me know if you need anything.

WELL THE INFORMATION I GOT IS FROM A DOCTOR IN SLC, NOT MY SON'S DOCTOR. SO I GOT A SECOND OPINION. DO U GUYS THINK THAT THE BRACE WON'T HELP HIM AT ALL? IF I COULD SKIP THE CASTING I WOULD LIKE TO, BUT I AM NOT SURE HOW MUCH CORRECTION HE WILL GET OUT OF THE BRACE. I AM SO CONFUSED ABOUT WHICH TO PUT HIM IN.I REALLY APPRECIATE ALL THE FEED BACK I AM GETTING FROM ALL OF YOU. DR D. SAYS THAT HIS CONCERN IS THE HEAT AND HIS AGE. THEY SY THAT HE WILL BENIFIT FROM THE BRACE. ISAIAH WILL HAVE TO WEAR THE BRACE UNTIL HE REACHES SKELETAL MATURITY, THEN HE WILL HAVE TO HAVE THE SPINAL FUSION. I AM SORRY I FEEL LIKE I AM GOING AROUND IN CIRCLES WITH MY QUESTIONS. THEY ARE TRYING TO RESCHEDULE US FOR ABOUT THE 10 OF JUNE BUT THAT IS NOT A FOR SURE DATE. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME

Malayna, Dr. D'Astous is an excellent doctor and you are in fantastic hands if you stick with him. I would trust his judgement with my own child based on what the other parents have written about him. If he is recommending the brace, then I am sure he will monitor him closely to make sure that it contains the progression.... That is what my question to him would be... If the brace doesn't hold the curve, then what would the next step be? And how often will they take an x-ray to make sure he's not progressing.... Hope that helps!!!!
