How long will kefir/yogurt last in the refrigerator?

I have never made yogurt myself, but a freind has given me a jar of

their homemade yogurt (BTW, it's great!) and I'm wondering how long

it will keep in the refrigerator.

I'm also wondering how long kefir will keep in the refrigerator? Any

comments?

It's been my experience that yogurt will putrify after a week or so,

while kefir will become stronger tasting with time, yet remain edible

even after several weeks. I credit kefir's longevity to it's

exceedingly robust probiotic qualities. IMO, yogurt culture is wimpy.
