Guest guest
What state do you live in? How old is Toby and what degree is his curve? Is he idiopathic? Welcome to this wonderful group! This group of parents is just phenominal. I am sure you will find this group to be very supportive and full of helpful information!! > >Date: 2008/03/15 Sat PM 06:09:22 CDT >To: infantile_scoliosis >Subject: New to this Group > >Help! We are new to this group and are in the beginning stages of either casting or growing rods. It is so hard to make a decision without knowing all the ins and outs. Any information would be greatly appreciated. We have been going to Children's Mercy and have noticed all the good things people are saying about the Shriner's. We were wondering what the closest Shriner's facility that is the best for infantile scoliosis. > >Bruce, Belinda & Toby > >
Guest guest
We live in Kansas. Toby is 2, soon to be 3 in June. His curve is at a 53, and yes it is idiopathic. He was diagnosed with this at the age of 9 months. We went through the bracing and was just told last week that it isn't working and that we needed to make a decision on casting or growing rods. I just don't feel that my husband or I are knowledgeable in either area to make an educated decision at this point. I can't begin to tell you how relieved I am to have found this web site and other parents who are in this same position. It has been a long road with a lot of self learning. Guest guest
We are in the St. Louis Metro area - not far from you - and I think the nearest Shriner's would be Chicago. It's a quick flight from Kansas City. The growth rods are something I would only consider as a completely last resort. Casting is so fantastic, when done right. Guest guest
Hi my name is Rochelle and we live in Colorado. We go to the Denver Dhildrens hospital and there is a doctor trained correctly in the Early treatment process with the POP jackets. Other than that I think the closest Shriners to you would be in Salt lake City Utah. You can see my sons pictures in the photo section under Devyn. He started with a curve over 40degrees last May and after three casts and two braces he is down to 8degrees out of brace and 4.2degrees in the brace. The casting really does work and I would do it again any day instead of the rods. Feel free to ask any questions I would be happy to share. Guest guest
How do we know which Shriner's hospital is the closest but at the same time the best and that knows the correct treatment for Toby?? Guest guest
Check the database and see what is around you. If they're trained in early treatment and have the proper pediatric AMIL frame, you're good, for the most part.
