I started taking mag a while back along with K and it really helped with

anxiousness. i take spiro 12.5 a day but along with DASH and exercise (which i

can do again since the K is controlled) i feel great. so mag has helped some i

feel. 43 yo male PA-C with PA

pressure? I have used it with seemingly some improvement and far less side

effects than all the bp meds I have used. But then there are those sudden spikes

that I have and the anxiety that goes with it that are so frustrating. I plan

to go to another doctor and ask to be tested correctly for aldosterone/renin. I

don't want to delay any tests being on the wrong med and/or supplements. Would

it be okay to be on the hawthorn berries and magnesium? Or if I can't see a

specialist right away should I go to maybe my primary doctor and ask him to put

me on spiro? Meanwhile, I have started on the DASH diet.

Glenda,

when you get aldosterone and renin tests, you should have a 24-hour urine at

the same time. Eating low salt can

artificially increase your renin and make interpretation of the AR tests

difficult. Spiro distorts the tests,

too, so no sense in getting them if you are on spiro. Why not just ask your primary for the

tests you want?

Val,

When I had the alsosterone/renin test I was on a good diet, but not too strict

about my salt intake. So that might explain the elevated renin of 11.5

(0.5-4.0). I was also on lisinopril so I can not trust these results. Now the

cortisol test was done properly and it was extremely low at 0.9 (6.2-19.4).

This is probably what has me feeling like I am just going to die. And the

anxiety is really crazy. And to think that the doctor never told me about this

abnormal test results. I am awaiting his return call with an explanation. And

do you know if a low chromogranin A result has an significance?

Has your K ever been low? We don't know about hawthron etc. Why in the world would you try these when there is no control on what goes in them and most are made in China.DASH dammit.CE Grim MDGlenda, when you get aldosterone and renin tests, you should have a 24-hour urine at the same time. Chromogranin has been used to screen for Pheochromocytoma. I have never ordered this test. Ask your Dr why and what is the significance. From my history & symptoms, the doctor really thought that I could perhaps have

a pheochromocytoma. This is why he took this test along with the plasma free

metanephrines which showed 42 metanephrines (norm =less that 58),

normetanephrine 140 (norm=less that 149), & total metanephrines 182 (norm

=206). The endocrinologist also said that the chromogranin A was to screen for

carcinoid. I have read that high could indicate a tumor but what does my lower

than normal (1.4)reading indicate? Apparently the dr. did not think that it

was significant.

You probably are right. When giving my history, I did mention to the dr. that

17 years ago immediately after I had my last baby I gained 50 lbs. in 6 months

with no change of diet. I had only gained 17 for the pregnancy and had never

had this problem for any of the other 4 pregnancies. I stated to him that I

believe that something really went wacko in my body hormonally at that point.

Looking back, I remember toward the end of the pregnancy a nurse asked me if I

had pre-eclampsia when she finished taking my blood pressure. I really wasn't

sure what that was at the time, but now wonder if that was the beginnning of the

problems that I am having now. This is when I began to retain fluid and just

not feel well. But I thought that I really emphasized to the dr. that I was

just wanting to be able to function normally again especially without the blood

pressure spikes & anxiety. If I knew that the aldosterone test was done right

and it was normal, I can accept that I just have to work even harder on my diet

and get the right medicine. If the tumor needs to be removed for me to get

better, I am so ready to get it surgically removed and possibly have normal

blood pressure & feel " normal " again.

Men classically put on weight around the same age. . . .so is it hormones or

lifestyle? Likely both in all of us. Testosterone " cuts " the body so when it

starts sagging (pun intended) so do the muscles. Insulin cuts too and used to

available without prescription. Body builders would get it. yet that weakens too

mid age so the flabby man could make the hormones case also
