Guest guest
You and i are the same age for 2 days anyway. Spiro worked dramatically after 2 doses for me, but i went years with severe HTN (160/120) and I was on 5 at once when i started it. what was your potassium? and did they stop the HCTZ? Guest guest
Very similar to my situation...in my case: Micardis=totally useless HCTZ was killing me so switched to less damaginf Indapamide Norvasc does some lowering of bp helping Spiro after 7 years of drug combos finally Spiro 100 mg/d normalized my PA BP Clonidine is useless with ARR =134 if doc says u r no PA then change your doc..or ask Trump to check his medical credentials! 4-6 weeks for Spiro to fully normalize BP is normal.,,but may need increase it Max. 61M L adenoma by NP59 scan. Guest guest
Somebody should get serious about pursuing treatment because running a BP of 160 for years is going to be very harmful. What about your potassium (K)? Val On Mon May 16th, 2011 10:47 PM CDT johnster999 wrote: >Hello All > >I've been battling HTN since I was 28. Guest guest
Hi. For me around 10 days and it worked. However you really need to check the bravo study on the documents part of this group. The secret is not much the spiro, the " secret " is to Dash, you need to change your diet. Basically that study says this: We got a bounch of patients we let them eat as much salt as they wanted, and gave them spiro, even with SUPER HIGH doses of spiro their Blood pressure was VERY HIGH. So spiro with high doses of salt does nothing. Then they grabbed the same patients and restricted their sodium intake, ( they lowered the amount of salt they used ), all of them had to lower their dose of spiro, because it was working so good, some did not even need the spiro at the end. So really, Unless you start lowering your sodium intake, Spiro could do nothing at all, or take weeks or months to start. My personal experience is that I started at 50mgs of spiro, and dashing, now that dashing is easier and harder, I'm at 6.25mg of spiro and my BP is LOW, very low. So really regarless of tests and anything take your spiro and diet, you will do much better even if you do not have PA. your body can't raise your BP without you having sodium inside. Good luck ! o. > > Hello All > > I've been battling HTN since I was 28. Over the years, one drug after another failed to provide long term control. Finally multiple drugs have failed. Guest guest
Hello! I just wanted to let you know I saw results with Spiro immediately. I am on 100mg in the morning and 50 mg in the evening. Prior to this I was on Dyazide (water pill) for hand and feet swelling. After the second time in the hospital for low K, high HTN the doctor told me to stop taking that immediately. I wasn't happy with that but I did it and now since joining this group I am wondering if that contributed to my problems. Hope that helps. Guest guest
I'd say that's a pretty good guess that the dyazide added to your problems. It contains HCTZ, which is notorious for lowering K. I took HCTZ for 3 or 4 years, and had constant problems with hands and feet swelling during that time. I stopped taking it when my PA diagnosis was just starting - within 2 weeks I had dropped almost 10 pounds in salt/water weight and have not had any issues with swollen hands and feet since. My K is still low all the time though, even with the horse pills > > > > Hello All > > > > I've been battling HTN since I was 28. Guest guest
Dyazide = HCTZ + Triamterene HCTZ = the killer drug Triamterene = 30% potency of Spiro Based on my understanding Ltd. Max. Hello!I just wanted to let you know I saw results with Spiro immediately. I am on 100mg in the morning and 50 mg in the evening. Prior to this I was on Dyazide (water pill) for hand and feet swelling. After the second time in the hospital for low K, high HTN the doctor told me to stop taking that immediately. I wasn't happy with that but I did it and now since joining this group I am wondering if that contributed to my problems.Hope that helps.Kellie Female – Age 41 – Height: 5’5” – Weight since HTN and Low K at all time high of 190.Treated for HTN from age 18-32 when it suddenly dropped. Guest guest
So now I can't help but wonder if I never took HCTZ if I would be in this boat!! I try to tell myself that wasn't the cause since i suffered high HTN starting at age 19 and horrible migraines through my 30's before I even took the HCTZ. Unlike you though I gained 10+ pounds after quitting HCTZ; however, I don't have the swelling of the hands and feet anymore probably due to cutting out the salt. Guest guest
I was on no medications when the hands and feet started swelling. That was after my blood pressure dropped for now reason after having high HTN from age 19-32. The swelling started about 2 years after that.  Stopping Dyazide helped lot I suspect what meds were you on when feet were swelling. Tiped sad Send form mi iPhone ;-) May your pressure be low! Over the years, one drug after another failed to provide long term control. Finally multiple drugs have failed. I never had a doctor who thought to test me for any secondary cause. I'm now 43. 5 years ago I had back surgery to remove a benign tumor from my spine that was causing back pain. During the workup for that, a lesion was seen on my left adrenal gland. Now, in the last year, I've been getting more and more curious about Conns as my bp continues to go higher. My primary ran a 24-hour urine at my urging which showed aldosterone of 24 which was above their lab normal of 21. No renin was done. My primary sent me for a CT to check on the tumor. It is a 2cm lesion consistent with adenoma, per the report. Medications up to this point were Micardis 80mg, Clonidine .2 3times/day, HCTZ 12.5/day Bp is running generally in the mid 160s/ low 100s with occasions where it will shoot up a lot higher. I finally saw an Endocrinologist who ran the ARR test (because I insisted) and my Aldosterone was 13.4 vs a Renin of .1. The blood was drawn around 10:30am fasting. No medications were stopped or changed. It seems this is a normal Aldo but the ratio of some 134:1 would seem a positive result. The endo did not seem interested in pursuing treatment for me or doing additional testing. I've also seen a nephrologist recently who suspected Conn's and put me on spironolactone 25mg/day and increased my hctz to 50mg/day. There seems to be a slight benefit since adding the spiro (it's been two weeks) but not a lot. I called the docs office about increasing the spiro but they've put me on amlodipine 10mg instead which I just started today. For those of you on spironolactone, how long did it take to work and at what dosage? I've got another appointment with a different endo in early June so I'm hoping for the best. Thank you for this great site. It is a wonderful resource.

Guest guest
You have PA. Are you DASHING? Considering AVS? 25 mg spiro is hardly anything. Unless you getting that aldosterone blocked, you will have heart/kidney damage. If I remember correctly, amlodipine will not stop the left ventricular thickening. Guest guest
Swelling means u were eating more salt than you could get rid of. BCPs?Tiped sad Send form miiPhone ;-)May your pressure be low!CE Grim MDSpecializing in DifficultHypertension I was on no medications when the hands and feet started swelling.
