Guest guest
The Mcs near here will cook with no salt and even wipe the drainer clean before dumping fries in it. Their meat and chicken breast, however, are infused with sodium. Maybe you've never eaten at a fast food place, that's fine if that's what you want. For most of us here it's not realistic to believe that we'll never again visit Mcs. I went their a couple of days ago and had their Southwest Salad without the chicken, it has 150 mg of NA. And their small fries have 160 mg of sodium. The author is not advocating eating fast food, he says if you go, make smart choices. As for the graham crackers and unsalted pretzels, he's giving them as examples of snacks from the grain and nut group and says to limit them to once per day. It's your choice whether to eat them or not. a Subject: Re: DASH and processed junk food To: hyperaldosteronism Date: Thursday, May 5, 2011, 3:45 PM It's on Google Books and can be accessed here. The part about fast food is on p. 134. I just think it's appalling that doesn't just come out and say don't eat the stuff, ever. By saying that it's okay to eat fast food sometimes, he has lost all credibility with me. None of us here should ever, ever consume that toxic waste. The part encouraging junk food as snacks is on p. 159. He lists the junk food as 100-calorie snacks, and then some real food alternatives (nuts! which are good for you!) as 200-calorie snacks. Given our society's calorie-counting mindset, people will likely opt for the 100-calorie snacks that lack any nutritional value - graham crackers, vanilla wafers, pretzels, popcorn, and potato chips - rather than the far more healthful nuts. I'll like the project Thanks, that would be great if you could post an Indian recipe or two! I'm sure others here would appreciate it too. Guest guest
Even low-sodium soy sauce is too high: http://www.san-j.com/product_info.asp?id=4 And good luck finding low-sodium miso (lowest I've seen is 1000mg/tbsp). I know I'll feel OK if I keep my Na to 1200mg or less. Which means not adding anything containing Na to my food, until I get this thing resolved. Guest guest
a, your post prompted a couple of stories. We have two Granddaughters ages 5 and 6. One of their favorite things to do is for Granma and me to take them to Micky D's. It really doesn't matter what they order because most of the time we carry it home because they can't wait to get on the indoor playground. They run, jump, climb and have a great time. I usually have to get them off after an hour or more. They are well exersized and usually asleep before we get them home! My other story: After I retired from my 30 year career in computers I took a job driving a Tour Bus. I had a great experience touring all over the East coast. I certainly saw a lot of thr country! We did a lot of student tours and many times we had 3 or 4 (I remember one time 7) busses with up to 56 people on each bus. Where do you go if you want to feed 100 - 300 kids in less than an hour? You got it, fast food. All the Macs and Burger Kings would comp the drivers meal! (One local MickyD even gave the driver a $10 gift certificate booklet which I gave to my daughter who was in college at the time. She had so many she treated her friends!) Many times I didn't even go in unless it was to get a coffee and the coupons for my daughter!(Of course on a 5 -7 day trip you have to eat some times!) The main exception was if a child stayed on the bus because he had exhausted all his funds! I'd find out what he wanted and use my comp for him! The other times when we had an adult tour all the restruants would be trying to impress everyone so they would come back on their own. I would end up with a full breakfast and two " main " meals every day! One fall I was out 38 days straight and I thought I did well to only gain 15 lbs.! Oh yes, one tour company, the largest in the world with tours in all 7 contenents, took all their breaks at Macs - why, because they guarantee to always have clean restrooms and we were never disappointed on my shifts. You don't see many skinny tour bus drivers! Couldn't help but share - memories! - 64 yo morb. ob. male - 12mm X 13mm rt. a.adnoma with previous rt. flank & testicle pain. Plus I know I feel best when I eat smart. Still with the cancer and auto immune issues everyday can be a struggle . So I find some living in once a month going to a restraint I've never been to or going to a pub and having junk food pub food and a few Guinness. I'll feel like crap the next day anyway haha. A monk once saidModeration in everything including moderation. I read that in high school and have lived by it. And I've had a lot of fun in my life. At least I can look back on it and say I lived. The thought of a long life w cancer pain and RA pain scares the heck out of me!! It is always your choice. The data is clear tho. The higher the BP sHorter the time you spend here. Not only that you spend more of that life with heart disease, most of which lowers your quality of life. Tiped sad Send form miiPhone ;-)May your pressure be low!CE Grim MDSpecializing in DifficultHypertension I think each of us has to define what living is. For me eating bland food and every meal made at home ... Forever .. Isn't living. To those that have no problem with this, you might think I'm an idiot. But I prefer to experience life and that involves travel and eating out and going to the pub. I can make wiser choices when I do these things but I won't give them up. What's that joke about the man who goes to his dr and is told to give up smoking, drinking, bad women and bad food and then he could live to 100. And the patient responds, but who'd want to live then!? That's me. I had the l-adrenalectomy and went completely off all bp meds in six months. I am currently having fluctuating bp which might be third related. I saw a new endo this week to make sure my pituitary adenoma or past PA might be causingy problems. I got the patronizing you must have anxiety treatment. I've never heard of anxiety causing 90/55 BP or anxiety while completely calm reading a book but then I'm just a patient. She did not order any bloodwork Nd offered menmetformin. I have a fasting blood sugar of 89 which she never bothered checking. But all people that need to lose weight are automatically diabetic! ? Anyhow I asked if she could order PA labs and urine studies before she made up her mind about me. She said but your renin was fine on your labs you brought in... From 2006! I could go on but you all have been there. Off to search for a new dr. And yes to occasionally have a Guinness and pub curry. Well...if fast food wouldnt kill me I would eat it all the time...cause I love the taste. It is "real life" for alot of people. Not just fast food, but eating out just about anywhere. You are the exception to the rule. Most people I know eat out ALOT. How many order pizza, have chinese, go the some fancier restaruant that is loaded with salt and other nasties? Guest guest
Great note on the Bus Drivers.Classic study of Bus Drivers (public) and HTN done in San Fran. High rate of HTN which the investigators suggested was due to the job stress. Terrible job nut excellent pay; called the golden chair. Could find no association of BP with stress. Did not do 24 hr urine Na of course as they were psychologists doing the study.CE Grim MD a, your post prompted a couple of stories. We have two Granddaughters ages 5 and 6. Guest guest
I grew up knowing otherwise, but somehow I thought the one thing I could control was my health. I was wrong. I still think it's important to make wise choices re: lifestyle and eating - I'm not, for instance, going to eat at Mc's just because they have a low-sodium offering or two And I'm pretty certain that as far as PA goes, I've got it easy compared to a lot of folks here. Except for when I get salt-bombed by eating the wrong thing, I'm really only sick " on paper " most of the time - rarely do I actually feel unwell. So, I must be doing something right -msmith1928 45, female, 5'3 " , 120 lbs, 1cm left adrenal nodule, supine aldosterone 28.5/renin 0.2, potassium <2.9 (when not taking supplements); 25mg spiro caused gynecomastia; no HTN meds; current meds are 20MEQ K 2x/day, singulair 10mg, norethindrone .35mg, cyclobenzaprine 5-10mg when needed, fexofenadine 180mg when needed; low sodium, fructose- and grain-free diet > >>> > > >>> > I think each of us has to define what living is. Guest guest
It is what it is - so true. My husband also struggles with making the right food choices and it's a real bummer sometimes but here's another thing to remember: things could be worse. This is a disease that can be treated effectively with the right meds and salt restricting diet. There are so many diseases that have no cure and cause unending pain and suffering. We are lucky, actually. My husband and I gained a lot of perspective about life in general three years ago when our son was diagnosed with life threatening bone marrow failure and needed a bone marrow transplant to survive. He is alive and well today and that chapter of our lives is behind us. Dealing with PA is gravy compared to all that. Perspective is everything, I believe. Husband, 43, finally diagnosed with PA (very low renin, high aldosterone and ARR, very low K for years) after 5 years on 6 different BP meds and K replacement in October 2010. > > > > > > I think each of us has to define what living is.
