In the " Fourteen Days on the Dash Diet " chapter (I've got the mass-market

paperback, 2001 edition) recommended foods include bagels, muffins, pancakes,

and snacks like graham crackers, vanilla wafers, pretzels, and potato chips.

These are all processed junk foods, and nothing can convince me that they belong

in a healthy eating plan. Unfortunately, I suspect they are where much of the K

comes from, since flour has to be " enriched " with vitamins by law.

It would be great if someone would revamp this book for the health-conscious

among us, who do not eat processed foods. The science behind the diet seems

sound, but it's aimed at an audience that probably is eating really poorly to

begin with and for whom just about anything would be an improvement. I mean, the

" Dash in Action " chapter actually advocates eating fast food occasionally!

Not sure which book you have but I can't find any mention of potato chips, pretzels, graham crackers or vanilla wafers for snacks in the edition I have. I can't find any junk food in my book. Examples of the snacks listed in my book are: banana, yogurt, pear, cottage cheese, peach, light string cheese, strawberries, almonds, plum, tangerine, low NA tomato bisque, gelatin, nectarine, kiwi, raw bell peppers, unsalted peanuts, etc.

I went to the library and rented a copy of DASH. The 14 days had a set menu to

follow to truly take the 14 day challenge. The diet was extremely healthy

almost to the point of being overkill. I didn't see any potato chips in the

diet. The DASH plan stresses whole grains. So bagels could be whole

grain/whole wheat I guess.

What I find on DASH, is that if I follow the guidelines it is very hard to eat

unhealthy. You should hit 4-5 vegetables and 4-5 fruits per day. It is also

recommended to eat less than 300mg of cholesterol and less than 1% of calories

from trans fat.

I reread the book and did not see any mention of potato chips, or any white

bread bakery products. In fact, it specifically mentions to avoid bakery

products and simple carbs. Whole grain should make up 6-8 servings for fiber

and carb needs.

I try to hit a target of 45-75g of carbs per meal. I do this to balance my

meals. It helps me to avoid overeating and avoid bad carbs. I realized that

when I would overeat, my carb totals would be triple digits easy. Limiting the

carb intake helps me to balance what I eat. It would be impossible for me to

hit the veg/fruit/dairy requirements, stay under 75g of carbs per meal, and

start adding things like white bagels, potato chips, etc.

Good luck on starting DASH. It really works for me and I notice at least a 15

point difference on my blood pressure numbers when I don't follow DASH. That is

before I started Spiro and now after I take 25mg of Spiro per day. The key to

followig the plan in my opinion, is planning the intake of 5 veg and 5 fruit per

day. I generally have tupperware containers ready with green pepper snacks, cut

appples, cauliflower, etc. If you plan the days menu around the 10 servings of

fruits and veg, the rest falls into place. 10 servings of fruit and veg are a

lot and will fill you up quite a bit where you might not even have room for

potato chips.

Mine is a 2001 mass-market paperback edition. Yours sounds like it's been

updated. Personally I have no problem navigating past the junk food in mine -

basically if I wouldn't have eaten it before I was diagnosed, there's no reason

to start eating it now - but I was somewhat surprised to see so many

non-essential, high-calorie foods recommended.

Oh please! I didn't misread - don't insult my intelligence. Master's degree in

library science here :)

I think I must have an old edition of the book from back in the days where

low-fat and fat-free junk food was being heavily pushed. I picked it up in a

thrift store for a couple bucks because I figured that any edition would be a

good start, but perhaps it has changed a bit.

I've gotten through almost 46 years of real life without ever having to

eat in a fast food restaurant! It's not that hard. Really.

Well...if fast food wouldnt kill me I would eat it all the time...cause I love the taste. It is "real life" for alot of people. Not just fast food, but eating out just about anywhere. You are the exception to the rule. Most people I know eat out ALOT. How many order pizza, have chinese, go the some fancier restaruant that is loaded with salt and other nasties? Answer - Most people I know. Nothing at a pub is DASH kosher.

The point I'm trying to make, though, is that when you get sick, you have to

change these bad habits. Otherwise it's just being in denial.

Since my dx I've lived on bland, boring food like grilled chicken breast and

salads. While I didn't grow up on fast food (and wouldn't eat it if I was paid

to!), I did grow up on flavorful, interesting ethnic food like Japanese and

Indian and Thai. What makes all the food I truly love interesting and flavorful?

Sodium, mainly.

I've had to give it all up because I refuse to take a pill that will cause

intolerable side effects. It's not easy, but for me now, this is " real life. "

Agreed. It is the salt i like to. All my favorite Chinese food places are pretty much off limits now. I miss salt in my cooking already, but I am seasoning the heck of things with garlic and all kinds of things to spice up some flavor. So far, I dont mind it. I have not purchased any "NoSalt" yet to try. Not sure that it tastes that good as an option, but it might help with getting more potassium

Very interesting. Can you scan page in and send to me or fax I will send to Dr. . Can others look at their DASH 14 day trial chap and see if this is in theirs? Maybe the food industry slipped in some pages in one of the versions. Was it the paper back or hardback.Latter our of print but can buy used at Amazon sometimes less than new paperback. I for one am glad you can " read with comprehension " ! If I had your edition I

would probably think " there is a God after all " and had a bagel for breakfast

and chips for the ball game! (I've actually gotten over the chip binges and can

walk right by an open bag but back in the day I would have taken it as a

personal challenge to " kill the whole bag " !) Each little tidbit of information

helps me get closer to reducing that BMI (which needs to be cut a little more

than in half as I recall!)

I know, " Get the book " and I probably will but right now I am going to act on

another hint and head to the library.

- 64 yo morb. ob. male - 12mm X 13mm rt. a.adnoma with previous rt. flank &

testicle pain.

Other Issues/Opportunities: COPD w/ft Oxygen, OSA w Bi-Pap settings 13/19, Type

II Diab. and PTSD

Currently on Spiro. 50 MG and titrating last 2 BP meds preparing for

adrenalectomy, maybe. Current BP ave. 112/60.

I don't see anything wrong with this, he's just being realistic. Maybe you've never eaten at a fast food place, that's fine if that's what you want. For most of us here it's not realistic to believe that we'll never again visit Mcs. I went their a couple of days ago and had their Southwest Salad without the chicken, it has 150 mg of NA. And their small fries have 160 mg of sodium. The author is not advocating eating fast food, he says if you go, make smart choices. As for the graham crackers and unsalted pretzels, he's giving them as examples of snacks from the grain and nut group and says to limit them to once per day. It's your choice whether to eat them or not.

In my paperback i just bought there is nothing in the 14 day part...but on page 134 they talk about how even some fast food places have items that are not off limits...yet they then proceed to list out how horrible the items are at various places.
